SO I HAVE A LOT OF QUESTIONS BUT THIS IS A KEY QUESTION

Why are we overlooking a very obvious fact.  What makes a man a good candidate to run for president of the United States of America when he wont even show our flag respect by putting his hand over his heart?  We wont go into the other issues.

I'm not even picking sides here cause I am not impressed in either of the big 2 choices we have.

What is going on with this country or the politicians that they cannot see this?

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them. Have you ever wondered why, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, we have deficits? Have you ever wondered why, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, we have inflation and high taxes? You and I don't propose a federal budget. The president does. You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does. You and I don't write the tax code, Congress does. You and I don't set fiscal policy, Congress does. You and I don't control monetary policy, The Federal Reserve Bank does. One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president and nine Supreme Court justices - 545 human beings out of the 300 million - are directly, legally, morally and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country. I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered but private central bank. I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman or a president to do one cotton-picking thing. I don't care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's responsibility to determine how he votes. Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party. What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits. The president can only propose a budget He cannot force the Congress to accept it. The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? She is the leader of the majority party She and fellow House members, not the president, can approve an y budget they want. If the president vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to. It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million can not replace 545 people who stand convicted � by present facts - of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can't think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist. If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair. If the budget is in the red, it's because they want it in the red. If the Marines are in IRAQ , it's because they want them in IRAQ . If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it's because they want it that way. There are no insoluble government problems. Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like 'the economy,' 'inflation' or 'politics' that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do. Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible. They, and they alone, have the power. They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses - provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees. We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

A good video most of you will enjoy its a bit political  a bit religious and a bit about how we are expected to give up our rights and our In God We Trust and Ten Commandments yet the Saudi's expect to be able to refuse service (in this country) to women not wearing a scarf over their head, or refuse to sell alcohol when they are working in a store that sells alcohol and many other obsurdities.

Sentence of Reid – January 30, 2003

Remember the guy who got on a plane with a bomb built into his shoe and
tried to light it? Did you know his trial is over?
Did you know he was sentenced?
Did you see/hear any of the judge's comments on TV or Radio?
Didn't think so.
Everyone should hear what the judge had to say.

Ruling by Judge William Young, US District Court.

Prior to sentencing, the Judge asked the defendant if he had anything to
say.  His response: After admitting his guilt to the court for the record,
Reid also admitted his "allegiance to Osama bin Laden, to Islam, and to
the religion of Allah," defiantly stating, "I think I will not apologize
for my actions," and told the court "I am at war with your country." Judge
Young then delivered the statement quoted below:
January 30, 2003, United States vs. Reid. Judge Young:
"Mr. Richard C. Reid, hearken now to the sentence the Court imposes upon
you. On counts 1, 5 and 6 the Court sentences you to life in prison in the
custody of the United States Attorney General.  On counts 2, 3, 4 and 7,
the Court sentences you to 20 years in prison on each count, the sentence
on each count to run consecutively.  (That's 80 years.) On count 8 the
Court sentences you to the mandatory 30 years again, to be served
consecutively to the 80 years just imposed.

The Court imposes upon you for each of the eight counts a fine of $250,000
that's an aggregate fine of $2 million.  The Court accepts the
government's recommendation with respect to restitution and orders
restitution in the amount of $298.17 to Andre Bousquet and $5,784 to
American Airlines. The Court imposes upon you an $800 special assessment.
The Court imposes upon you five years supervised release simply because
the law requires it.  But the life sentences are real life sentences so I
need go no further. This is the sentence that is provided for by our
statutes.  It is a fair and just sentence.  It is a righteous sentence.
Now, let me explain this to you.  We are not afraid of you or any of your
terrorist co-conspirators, Mr. Reid.  We are Americans.  We have been
through the fire before.  There is too much war talk here and I say that
to everyone with the utmost respect.  Here in this court, we deal with
individuals as individuals and care for individuals as individuals.  As
human beings, we reach out for justice. You are not an enemy combatant.
You are a terrorist.  You are not a soldier in any war.  You are a
terrorist.  To give you that reference, to call you a soldier, gives you
far too much stature. Whether the officers of government do it or your
attorney does it, or if you think you are a soldier. You are not----- you
are a terrorist. And we do not negotiate with terrorists.  We do not meet
with terrorists.  We do not sign documents with terrorists.  We hunt them
down one by one and bring them to justice. So war talk is way out of line
in this court.  You are a big fellow. But you are not that big.  You're no
warrior.  I've known warriors. You are a terrorist.  A species of criminal
that is guilty of multiple attempted murders.  In a very real sense, State
Trooper Santiago had it right when you first were taken off that plane and
into custody and you wondered where the press and the TV crews were, and
he said: "You're no big deal." You are no big deal.
What your able counsel and what the equally able United States attorneys
have grappled with and what I have as honestly as I know how tried to
grapple with, is why you did something so horrific.  What was it that led
you here to this courtroom today? I have listened respectfully to what you
have to say.  And I ask you to search your heart and ask yourself what
sort of unfathomable hate led you to do what you ar e guilty and admit you
are guilty of doing?  And, I have an answer for you.  It may not satisfy
you, but as I search this entire record, it comes as close to
understanding as I know.

It seems to me you hate the one thing that to us is most precious. You
hate our freedom.  Our individual freedom.  Our individual freedom to live
as we choose, to come and go as we choose, to believe or not believe as we
individually choose.  Here, in this society, the very wind carries
freedom.  It carries it everywhere from sea to shining sea.  It is because
we prize individual freedom so much that you are here in this beautiful
courtroom.  So that everyone can see, truly see, that justice is
administered fairly, individually, and discretely.  It is for freedom's
sake that your lawyers are striving so vigorously on your behalf, have
filed appeals, will go on in their representation of you before other
judges. We Ameri cans are all about freedom.  Because we all know that the
way we treat you, Mr. Reid, is the measure of our own liberties.  Make no
mistake though.  It is yet true that we will bare any burden; pay any
price, to preserve our freedoms.  Look around this courtroom.  Mark it
well.  The world is not going to long remember what you or I say here.
The day after tomorrow, it will be forgotten, but this, however, will long
endure. Here in this courtroom and courtrooms all across America, the
American people will gather to see that justice, individual justice,
justice, not war, individual justice is in fact being done.  The very
President of the United States through his officers will have to come into
courtrooms and lay out evidence on which specific matters can be judged
and juries of citizens will gather to sit and judge that evidence
democratically, to mold and shape and refine our sense of justice. See
that flag, Mr. Reid?  That's the flag of the United States of America.
That flag will fly there long after this is all forgotten. That flag
stands for freedom.  And it always will.  Mr. Custody Officer.  Stand him
down.
So, how much of this Judge's comments did we hear on our TV sets?  We need
more judges like Judge Young, but that's another subject.  Pass this
around.  Everyone should and needs to hear what this fine judge had to
say.  Powerful words that strike home.

This one is hard to even explain, it's so bizarre. McCain, looking just awful on camera, made yet another major gaffe about national security policy, on CBS. So what did Katie Couric do? She aired the interview with McCain, aired the question that led to the gaffe, and then inserted an "answer" to the question that wasn't the real gaffe-filled answer - it was something McCain said in a total other part of the interview. It's absolutely astounding how far the corporate media is willing to go in order to defend John McCain. And seriously, take a good look at McCain in this video, I was kind of shocked by his appearance - he doesn't look well at all.From A Long Tough Blog...
This is ugly. Katie Couric asks John McCain a question - and she and/or her producers air his answer to another question. Because his actual answer was so embarrassingly wrong. That her firing hasn't been announced already shows us how bad off we are.From Crooks and Liars...

 I don't know who wrote it but SHE should have signed it. Some powerful words.. This woman should run for president.

'Are we fighting a war on terror or aren't we? Was it or was it not started by Islamic people who brought it to our shores on September 11, 2001?
 


Were people from all over the world, mostly Americans, not brutally murdered that day, in downtown Manhattan ,  AND  across the Potomac FROM THE WHITE HOUSE,    AT THE PENTAGON,   just a stones throw from our nation's capitol,   AND  in a field in Pennsylvania AS WELL ?


 


Did nearly three thousand men, women and children die a horrible, burning or crushing death that day, or didn't they?


 


And I'm supposed to care that a copy of the Koran was 'desecrated' when an overworked American soldier kicked it or got it wet?...Well, I don't. I don't care at all.


 


I'll start caring when Osama bin Laden turns himself in and repents for incinerating all those innocent people on 9/11.


 


I'll care about the Koran when the fanatics in the Middle East start caring about the Holy Bible, the mere possession of which is a crime in Saudi Arabia


 


I'll care when these thugs tell the world they are sorry for chopping off Nick Berg's head while Berg screamed through his gurgling slashed throat.


 


I'll care when the cowardly so-called 'insurgents' in Iraq come out and fight like men instead of disrespecting their own religion by hiding in mosques.


 


I'll care when the mindless zealots who blow themselves up in search of 72 virgins  care about the innocent children within range of their suicide .


 


I'll care when the  'AMERICAN MEDIA'  stops pretending that their First Amendment liberties are somehow derived from international law instead of the United States Constitution AND the ' Bill of Rights'.


 


In the meantime, when I hear a story about a brave marine roughing up an Iraqi terrorist to obtain information,
know this: I don't care.


 


When I see a fuzzy photo of a pile of naked Iraqi prisoners who have been humiliated in what amounts to a college-hazing incident, rest assured: I don't care.


 


When I see a wounded terrorist get shot in the head when he is told not to move because he might be booby-trapped, you can take it to the bank: I don't care..


 


When I hear that a prisoner, who was issued a Koran and a prayer mat, and fed 'special' food that is paid for by my tax dollars, is complaining that his holy book is being 'mishandled,' you can absolutely believe in your heart of hearts: I don't care.


 


And oh, by the way, I've noticed that sometimes it's spelled 'Koran' and other times 'Quran.' Well, Jimmy Crack Corn and-you guessed it-I don't care !!


 


If you agree with this viewpoint, pass this on to all your E-mail friends. Sooner or later, it'll get to the people responsible for this ridiculous behavior!


 


If you don't agree, then by all means hit the delete button.   
 
Should you choose the latter, then please don't complain when more atrocities committed by radical Muslims happen here in our great Country!    ~~~~~    And may I add:

In case we find ourselves starting to believe all the Anti-American sentiment and negativity, we get every day fron the TV ~~~
 
WE  should remember England 's Prime Minister Tony Blair's words during a recent interview. When asked by one of his Parliament members why he believes so much in America , he said: 'A simple way to take measure of a country is to look at how many want in.. And how many want out.'


 


 


The last thing, by the way, that we should do is to elect  AS PRESIDENT  of the United States, someone who claims to love America yet, WILL NOT salute the flag.   WILL NOT pledge allegience to our flag,  and  sat in a church listening to a 'pastor' that HATES America!   Are you Freakin' kidding me?

2.. The American G. I.


 


One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

We  have million-dollar basketball players who can't write two paragraphs. We, as black folks have to do a better job. Someone working at Wal-Mart with seven kids, you are hurting us.

Did you know that 52 of the 55 signers of The Declaration of Independence
were orthodox, deeply committed Christians? The other three all believed
in the Bible as the divine truth, the God of scripture, and His personal
intervention.

It is the same congress that formed the American Bible Society.
Immediately after creating the Declaration of Independence, the
Continental Congress voted to purchase and import 20,000 copies of
scripture for the people of this nation.

Patrick Henry, who is called the firebrand of the American Revolution, is
still remembered for his words, "Give me liberty or give me death." But in
current textbooks the context of these words is deleted. Here is what he
said: "An appeal to arms and the God of hosts is all that is left us. But
we shall not fight our battle alone. There is a just God that presides
over the destinies of nations. The battle sir, is not of the strong alone.
Is life so dear or peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of
chains and slavery? Forbid it almighty God. I know not what course others
may take, but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death."



These sentences have been erased from our textbooks.

Was Patrick Henry a Christian? The following year, 1776, he wrote this "It
cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was
founded not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religion, but on
the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For that reason alone, people of other faiths
have been afforded freedom of worship here."

Consider these words that Thomas Jefferson wrote on the front of his well-
worn Bible: "I am a Christian, that is to say a disciple of the doctrines
of Jesus. I have little doubt that our whole country will soon be rallied
to the unity of our Creator and, I hope, to the pure doctrine of Jesus
also."

Consider these words from George Washington, the Father of our Nation, in
his farewell speech on September 19, 1796:

"It is impossible to govern the world without God and the Bible. Of all
the dispositions and habits that lead to political prosperity, our
religion and morality are the indispensable supporters. Let us with
caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without
religion. Reason and experience both forbid us to expect that our national
morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle."

Was George Washington a Christian? Consider these words from his personal
prayer book: "Oh, eternal and everlasting God, direct my thoughts, words
and work. Wash away my sins in the immaculate blood of the lamb and purge
my heart by the Holy Spirit. Daily, frame me more and more in the likeness
of thy son, Jesus Christ, that living in thy fear, and dying in thy favor,
I may in thy appointed time obtain the resurrection of the justified unto
eternal life. Bless, O Lord, the whole race of mankind and let the world
be filled with the knowledge of thy son, Jesus Christ."

Consider these words by John Adams, our second president, who also served
as chairman of the American Bible Society.

In an address to military leaders he said, "We have no government armed
with the power capable of contending with human passions, unbridled by
morality and true religion. Our constitution was made only for a moral and
religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."



How about our first   Court Justice, John Jay?

He stated that when we select our national leaders, if we are to preserve
our Nation, we must select Christians. "Providence has given to our people
the choice of their rulers and it is the duty as well as the privilege and
interest of our Christian Nation to select and prefer Christians for their
rulers."



John Quincy Adams, son of John Adams, was the sixth U.S. President.

He was also the chairman of the American Bible Society, which he
considered his highest and most important role. On July 4, 1821, President
Adams said, "The highest glory of the American Revolution was this: it
connected in one indissoluble bond the principles of civil government with
the principles of Christianity."

Calvin Coolidge, our 30th President of the United States reaffirmed this
truth when he wrote, "The foundations of our society and our government
rest so much on the teachings of the Bible that it would be difficult to
support them if faith in these teachings would cease to be practically
universal in our country."

In 1782, the United States Congress voted this resolution: "The congress
of the United Statesrecommends and approves the Holy Bible for use in all
schools."

William Holmes McGuffey is the author of the McGuffey Reader, which was
used for over 100 years in our public schools with over 125 million copies
sold until it was stopped in 1963. President Lincoln called him the
"Schoolmaster of the Nation."

Listen to these words of Mr. McGuffey: "The Christian religion is the
religion of our country. From it are derived our notions on character of
God, on the great moral Governor of the universe. On its doctrines are
founded the peculiarities of our free institutions. From no source has the
author drawn more conspicuously than from the sacred Scriptures. From all
these extracts from the Bible I make no apology."

Of the first 108 universities founded in America, 106 were distinctly
Christian, including the first.

Harvard University, chartered in 1636. In the original Harvard Student
Handbook rule number 1 was that students seeking entrance must know Latin
and Greek so that they could study the scriptures:

"Let every student be plainly instructed and earnestly pressed to consider
well, the main end of his life and studies is, to know God and Jesus
Christ, which is eternal life, John 17:3; and therefore to lay Jesus
Christ as the only foundation of all sound knowledge and learning. And
seeing the Lord only giveth wisdom, let everyone seriously set himself by
prayer in secret to seek it of him (Proverbs 2:3)."



For over 100 years, more than 50% of all Harvard graduates were pastors!

It is clear from history that the Bible and the Christian faith, were
foundational in our educational and judicial system. However in 1947,
there was a radical change of direction in the Supreme Court.

Here is the prayer that was banished:



"Almighty God, we acknowledge our dependence on Thee. We beg Thy blessings
upon us and our parents and our teachers and our country.



Amen."



  In 1963, the Supreme Court ruled that Bible reading was outlawed as
unconstitutional in the public school system. The court offered this
justification: "If portions of the New Testament were read without
explanation, they could and have been psychologically harmful to
children."

Bible reading was now unconstitutional , though the Bible was quoted 94
percent of the time by those who wrote our constitution and shaped our
Nation and its system of education and justice and government.

In 1965, the Courts denied as unconstitutional the rights of a student in
the public school cafeteria to bow his head and pray audibly for his food.



In 1980, Stone vs. Graham outlawed the Ten Commandments in our public
schools.

The Supreme Court said this: "If the posted copies of the Ten Commandments
were to have any effect at all, it would be to induce school children to
read them. And if they read them, meditated upon them, and perhaps
venerated and observed them, this is not a permissible objective."



Is it not a permissible objective to allow our children to follow the
moral principles of the Ten Commandments?

James Madison, the primary author of the Constitution of the United
States, said this: "We have staked the whole future of our new nation, not
upon the power of government; far from it. We have staked the future of
all our political constitutions upon the capacity of each of ourselves to
govern ourselves according to the moral principles of the Ten
Commandments."



Today we are asking God to bless America. But how can He bless a Nation
that has departed so far from Him?

Grandfather's Dream

David Swanson June 27, 2008 It's remarkably common for a grandson to take up his grandfather's major project. This occurred to me when I read recently of Thor Heyerdahl's grandson taking up his mission to cross the Pacific on a raft. But what really struck me was the BBC story aired on July 23rd, 2007, documenting President George W. Bush's grandfather's involvement in a 1933 plot to overthrow the U.S. government and install a fascist dictatorship. I knew the story, but had not considered the possibility that the grandson was trying to accomplish what his grandfather had failed to achieve.

Prescott Sheldon Bush (1895 to 1972) attended Yale University and joined the secret society known as Skull and Bones. Prescott is widely reported to have stolen the skull of Native American leader Geronimo. As far as I know, this has not actually been confirmed. In fact, Prescott seems to have had a habit of making things up. He sent letters home from World War I claiming he'd received medals for heroism. After the letters were printed in newspapers, he had to retract his claims.

If this does not yet sound like the life of a George W. Bush ancestor, try this on for size: Prescott Bush's early business efforts tended to fail. He married the daughter of a very rich man named George Herbert Walker (the guy with the compound at Kennebunkport, Maine, that now belongs to the Bush family, and the origin of Dubya's middle initial). Walker installed Prescott Bush as an executive in Thyssen and Flick. From then on, Prescott's business dealings went better, and he entered politics.

Now, the name Thyssen comes from a German named Fritz Thyssen, major financial backer of the rise of Adolph Hitler. Thyssen was referred to in the New York Herald-Tribune as "Hitler's Angel." During the 1930s and early 1940s, and even as late as 1951, Prescott Bush was involved in business dealings with Thyssen, and was inevitably aware of both Thyssen's political activities and the fact that the companies involved were financially benefiting the nation of Germany. In addition, the companies Prescott Bush profited from included one engaged in mining operations in Poland using slave labor from Auschwitz. Two former slave laborers have sued the U.S. government and the heirs of Prescott Bush for $40 billion.

Until the United States entered World War II it was legal for Americans to do business with Germany, but in late 1942 Prescott Bush's businesses interests were seized under the Trading with the Enemy Act. Among those businesses involved was the Hamburg America Lines, for which Prescott Bush served as a manager. A Congressional committee, in a report called the McCormack-Dickstein Report, found that Hamburg America Lines had offered free passage to Germany for journalists willing to write favorably about the Nazis, and had brought Nazi sympathizers to America. (Is this starting to remind anyone of our current president's relationship to the freedom of the press?)

The McCormack-Dickstein Committee was established to investigate a homegrown American fascist plot hatched in 1933. Here's how the BBC promoted its recent story:

"Document uncovers details of a planned coup in the USA in 1933 by right-wing American businessmen. The coup was aimed at toppling President Franklin D Roosevelt with the help of half-a-million war veterans. The plotters, who were alleged to involve some of the most famous families in America, (owners of Heinz, Birds Eye, Goodtea, Maxwell Hse & George Bush´s Grandfather, Prescott) believed that their country should adopt the policies of Hitler and Mussolini to beat the great depression. Mike Thomson investigates why so little is known about this biggest ever peacetime threat to American democracy."

 



Actually, if you listen to the 30-minute BBC story, there is not one word of so much as speculation as to why this story is so little known. I think a clue to the answer can be found by looking into why this BBC report has not led to any U.S. media outlets picking up the story this week.

The BBC report provides a good account of the basic story. Some of the wealthiest men in America approached Marine Corps Major General Smedley Butler, beloved of many World War I veterans, many of them embittered by the government's treatment of them. Prescott Bush's group asked Butler to lead 500,000 veterans in a take-over of Washington and the White House. Butler refused and recounted the affair to the congressional committee. His account was corroborated in part by a number of witnesses, and the committee concluded that the plot was real. But the names of wealthy backers of the plot were blacked out in the committee's records, and nobody was prosecuted. According to the BBC, President Roosevelt cut a deal. He refrained from prosecuting some of the wealthiest men in America for treason. They agreed to end Wall Street's opposition to the New Deal.

Clearly the lack of accountability in Washington, D.C., did not begin with Nancy Pelosi taking Dubya's impeachment off the table, or with Congress' decision to avoid impeachment for President Ronald Reagan (a decision that arguably played a large role in installing Prescott Bush's son George H.W. Bush as president), or with the failure to investigate the apparent deal that George H.W. Bush and others made with Iran to not release American hostages until Reagan was made president, or with the failure to prosecute Richard Nixon after he resigned. Lack of accountability is a proud tradition in our nation's capital. Or maybe I should say our former nation's capital. I don't recognize the place anymore, and I credit that to George W. Bush's efforts to fulfill his grandfather's dream using far subtler and more effective means than a military coup.

Bush the grandson took office through a highly fraudulent election that he nonetheless lost. The Supreme Court blocked a recount of the vote and installed Dubya.

Prescott's grandson proceeded to weaken or eliminate most of the Bill of Rights in the name of protection from a dark foreign enemy. He even tossed out habeas corpus. The grandson of Prescott, that dreamer of the 1930s, established with very little resistance that the U.S. government can kidnap, detain indefinitely on no charge, torture, and murder. The United States under Prescott Bush's grandson adopted policies that heretofore had been considered only Nazi policies, most strikingly the willingness to openly plan and engage in aggressive wars on other nations.

At the same time, Dubya has accomplished a huge transfer of wealth within the United States from the rest of us to the extremely wealthy. He's also effected a major privatization of public operations, including the military. And he's kept tight control over the media.

Dubya has given himself the power to rewrite all laws with signing statements. He's established that intentionally misleading the Congress about the need for a war is not a crime that carries any penalty. He's given himself the right (just as Hitler did) to open anyone's mail. He's created illegal spying programs and then proposed to legalize them. Prescott would be so proud!

The current President Bush has accomplished much more smoothly than his grandfather could have imagined a feat that was one of the goals of Prescott's gang, namely the elimination of Congress.

Tapped Out Nation

It was to be the year of change, of new ideas, a new politics.

Yet, as of today, it appears the Republican Party will be led into the future by a Beltway favorite of the media and Washington insider who has spent the last quarter of a century on Capitol Hill.

And the Democratic Party appears about to build a bridge to the past by nominating the spouse of the last Democratic president who has herself been a Washington insider for almost 20 years.

With two-thirds of the nation saying the country is on the wrong course, the two parties are offering candidates both of whom played major roles in setting that course. And neither probable nominee has advanced ideas to deal with the crises America faces, nor even shown any great awareness that the country is in crisis.

The first crisis is fiscal, with the Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid costs about to break the bank as the baby boomers reach early retirement. Add the other entitlement programs, defense and interest on the debt, and this consumes perhaps 90 percent of the budget.

No one is proposing cuts in any major component of the budget. Indeed, Mrs. Clinton is promising universal health care and McCain is promising an expansion of the military. Both favor a stimulus package of roughly $150 billion. As our savings rate is about zero, where are we going to borrow the money for all this?

A second crisis is financial. With the economy in danger of seizing up, the Fed has cut interest rates from 4.25 percent to 3 percent in two weeks. This has sent the dollar plunging again. A sinking dollar means surging prices for oil and all those foreign manufactures to which we are now addicted.

As the dollars pour out, nations have started to spend their dollar hoards to buy up this country at the fire-sale prices being offered in the global marketplace.

A third crisis is strategic. With an army of half a million and a Marine Corps a third that size, we are ending our fifth year of war in Iraq and entering the seventh year in Afghanistan. With the Taliban and al-Qaida now re-established and threatening Pakistan, what will it require in blood and treasure to prevent a strategic disaster there?

Mrs. Clinton is committed to a withdrawal from Iraq, but McCain says we will stay 100 years if necessary and warns, "There's going to be other wars." But wars against whom? Iran? Pakistan? Russia? North Korea? With the U.S. military stretched to the breaking point, and the quality of army recruits falling, who will fight these wars?

Then there is the immigration crisis. It is estimated that there are 12 million to 20 million illegal aliens in the United States today, with many hundreds of thousands being added each year.

McCain and Hillary both voted for the amnesty bill, neither is committed to sending back the illegals, and both give only grudging support to the idea of a border fence. How do they propose stopping the scores or hundreds of millions from Latin America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East from breaking into the United States in coming decades? Does anyone see in either Clinton or McCain the resolve to deal with what Americans are coming to believe is a crisis of national identity and national survival?

Then there is the crisis of the American middle class.

As economist Robert Reich writes, the real wages of working men have not risen in 30 years. Families maintained their standard of living three ways. Wives went to work. The men began to work longer hours than in almost any other developed nation. The family's equity in its home was then borrowed to sustain consumption.

Now, with the middle class tapped out, the home equity used up or declining, and mortgage, auto and credit card debt turning rotten, the U.S. government is going abroad to borrow 1 percent of GDP to hand out in checks in May to get consumers buying again to prevent a recession.

What kind of long-term solution is this?

How can a government as deep in debt as this one, going deeper every day, with the Social Security-Medicare crisis looming, continue to borrow to fight wars, finance foreign aid and defend nations that refuse to make the sacrifices to defend themselves?

America today faces both a fiscal crisis and a currency crisis.

Our dependence on foreign loans, foreign oil and foreign manufacturers is unprecedented.
We are being invaded from the south and seemingly lack the moral fiber to defend our home and throw out the intruders.

We have neither the men nor the weapons to honor all the treaty commitments and war guarantees we have given out to nations all over the world -- and McCain plans to add several more.

Yet, we are consumed with the issue of whether Bill Clinton, by comparing Barack Obama to Jesse Jackson, was playing "the race card."

We are an unserious people in a serious time.
