On the way back from lunch today, we noticed some irresponsible parent (presumably) with their infant child in their lap in the front seat of the car with them with no seat belt.  I believe in Texas, if children do not have adequate safety restraints in the car, the driver’s fine, if guilty is around $200.  Does anyone else think this is a light punishment for someone that is knowingly putting a child in potential danger?  I think the driver should be charged with child endangerment.

Very dangerous!
You have got to have those kids in a car seat. And airbags make the front seat even more dangerous for our children.

Yea, it is so light that people ignore it. I don't know how these people get by with it. I also agree it is child endangerment and the fines should be alot stricter!!

Yes there should be stricter fines. All toddlers and infants need to be properly secured in a car seat. I make sure mine is in seat blets, I am not too crazy about haveing to put my 11 year old in a booster becuase she is under 60 pounds, she is 1/4 phillipine and very tiny, she aint crazy about it either. I let her sit in a regular seat belt so does that make me a "bad" parent?

No, skeasling that doesn't make you a bad parent. It is hard to put the older ones in one. My daughter was built the same way. I don't think anyone on these blogs would think you are a bad parent.

Teamj,

200 bucks is pretty stiff for a parent, at least for most parents.

An endangerment charge is harder to prove. Failure to use the child seat is an easier charge to make stick.
