WOW! I am trying to figure this whole ting out. I got notice last month, dated February 29 that i owed 1732.40 not including my march payment of 655.20 to stop "foreclosure"  on my home. OK so when you had the 655.20 it come s to 2402 and some odd change. So I talk to collections guy make arrangements for it to be settled by the 1st. No big deal everything is worked out. Well today I get another notice say I owe 3447.60. OK that is like double within 19 days. How in the world can they jump it to twice what I owed in 19 days!!!! OMG!!!! I called and they say they have to pull my file but I already paid 1200 on Monday per agreement to the Feb 29 letter. How am I supposed to come up with an extra 1000 every 19 days if they keep this up. When dh changed jobs it hurt money wise and I am not making excuses and when it rains he cant work which is why I got working with the school. But no matter what we do if they can just keep adding money owed for whatever they please how can I keep giving them money just to lose my house anyway. I have always been optimistic about everything but i am starting to lose hope here. IS bankruptcy the answer?! I hope not because I really don't want to do that. My husband and I almost have thing caught up and then they throw this on to us with no explanation why. Is it just me or does their math add wrong. I thought 2+2=4 not 8.

I know that once my paycheck was late because my employer was switching banks and direct-deposit went away for a few pay periods. My check never got here. They would ask me to wait another day, etc. Still no check. As a result, my credit card payment was late. They put my interest rate up to 29.99% (It might have even been more than that). I was furious. I had been a great customer with them for more than 5 years, was always on-time with my payment, always paid more than the minimum due. But it was in the notices they send out (that most people don't read). I certainly didn't. It had a large balance so it was difficult for me to transfer the balance off to other cards. I wound up having to pay that for 6 months and then I called them to negotiate a new rate and they actually gave me a better rate than I had before. So bizarre. Anyway, I wonder if your mortgage agreement has some sort of clause like that. Maybe they are compounding the interest like those a loan shark would give you.

Just know, that the new bankruptcy laws still require that you pay off your bills (previously they used to wipe out what a person owed). However, I do believe you get to keep your car and your house but they will take all other credit cards and once you have that on your record, it stays there for 7 or 8 years. It would be hard to obtain credit with that on your record.

I believe that mortgage companies really don't want all these houses foreclosed on that they can't sell, so if they have someone who is making an effort to pay, they are going to deal with them regardless

Skeasling,

Whenever you're dealing with the mortgage company, always keep a record of all contacts, including the name, title, phone number and date.

If you negotiate a payment, make sure they provide you a clear explanation of what your next monthly obligation will be once you make a payment. Ask for any payment agreement in writing.

Don't accept verbal agreements alone.

Looks like my post got cut off.. I think the rest of it

...regardless of what a collection agency is threatening will happen.

Agree with Chassan. It was the first thing I learned when I started having conflict with the school district -- if it was not written down, it was never said, and could never be used as evidence either.

Skeasling, this sounds awful! I'm sorry but I don't have any advice to give, as I haven't ever owned a home or anything like that yet. I do hope that everything works out for you!
