sugar has a sneaky way of showing up in lots of foods you'd least suspect.  reading labels now requires a degree in chemistry.  never will you find "sugar" on a label.  dextrose, high fructose corn syrup, glucose, mono and di glycerides..... even with exercise and thinking i'm eating well, my triglycerides were more like cowglycerides.  it's embarrassing when the doctor asks, "my God, what are you eating?"  yeah, its genetic as well.  both my parents are on diets and meds to control tryglyceride levels.  high levels can lead to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, poor circulation, renal failure, and a whole host of other complications.  so educate yourself as sugars aren't so simple anymore.

Randy: I had to grossly restrict my carbs (all carbs) and in doing so dropped my triglycerides 50 points back down to normal levels. Have you given a low carb diet a try?

no, i haven't. since i exercise, i've thought that i'd work off the carbs and concentrate more on a low fat diet. for instance, when craving something sweet, instead of chocalates, pie, or cakes which are higher in fat, i'd eat skittles, hot tamales, lemon drops, starburst (all sugar, low fat). WRONG! so i can cut those out and go for sugar free or sweet substitutes, but i don't think i can give up my pasta, rice, or potatoes....

Randy,

I watch my sugar intake because of the adverse health implication is taking in too much sugar. But I have trouble catching all sugar, because of the very thing you point out.

I can count carbs, protein and fats, but sugar is really hard to track.
