Sister DePaul (left) and Sister Dymphna - (circa 1978) for Sister DePaul's going back to Ireland party.

Sadly, the old church where this was held was torn down.  The church was used as an assembly hall for meetings, retreats, and even youth club dances.  There was a new church built for mass.  The churches only co-existed for about 10 years before the old one was destroyed.  Sister Depaul died in 1982.

Sister Marian was our principal at St. Mary's Nativity School in Raceland, Louisiana.  The nuns belonged to The Religious Order of the Sisters of Mercy (RSM) which is an order of Catholic women founded by Catherine McAuley in Dublin, Ireland.  They were appointed by their Mother Superior and gave up their lives as they knew to educate us both academically and spiritually.  They ruled with an iron fist and a big red yardstick. (the "red doctor" which we needed when we were "ill" behaved).  Sister Dymphna is 75 years old and alive and well.

This picture was taken of Sister Marian around 1973 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.  She gave them out to all the teachers and students. Mother Superior allowed her to return to Ireland to die near her family.  Sister Dymphna then became our principal. As strict as they were, I miss them terribly.  Those really were the good 'ole days.  We don't realize what a good thing we have til its gone.  God bless these women.

Good morning. It's good to see a blog about people who never get much credit and never ask for anything in return for their service. Well done, sir.

Daniel

Randy: My mother was a novice (didn't profess final vows). I have a picture of her in her nun outfit. I'll have to upload it for you. Mother Superior didn't feel she had the calling, and she was right. But there are so many nuns out there leading lives as they walk the path of Christ, and rarely get a thanks. The play "Late Night Catechism" and its varieties takes up a collection at the end for retired nuns. I only attended kindergarten in Catholic school and I don't remember who I had. One of my favorite movies growing up was "Where Angels Go Trouble Follows" and I loved the rebel nun. They are a dying breed and aren't being replaced as quickly as they are dying. It's very sad.

i'd love to see the pic of your mom. convents and monistaries are much less populated these days. it is sad.

Hey lost a--. I in no way am trying to sell Jehovah. I just speek the truth and let it be known. You have no clue about who I am or what I have been through. The only thing you seem to have been through is a whole lota cupcakes and dingdongs.
