in new orleans, parishioners from about 15 Catholic parishes will learn whether or not their churches will be shut down.  some resigned to their fate quietly while others are vowing not to go down without a fight. dozens of parishes are marked for closure in a reorganization plan. the archdiocese is working to streamline as some parishes have not been able to recover after katrina.  there seems to be both a shortage of priests and parishioners.  my mom remembers when mass was said by the priest in latin with his back to the congregation.  she remains a devout Catholic.  do you think Catholicism is fading away or is it just a regional affect?

Houston and the surrounding area have seen tremendous growth in the number of people who consider themselves Catholic.

And the Gavlveston-Houston Archdiocese just recently inauguared its new 40-million dollar Co-Cathedral in downtown Houston.

It is very beautiful. I went to mass there this past Sunday.

I DON'T WANT TO OFFEND ANYONE BUT THE MOSQUE I GO TO HAS SEEN ALOT OF PEOPLE COME IN AND ACCEPT ISLAM THESE LAST FEW YEARS . ALOT OF THEM WERE FORMER ROMAN CATHOLICS OF ALL ETHNIC GROUPS . I HAVE ALSO NOTICED THE NUMBER OF SPANISH SPEAKING EVANGELICAL CHRISTIAN DENOMINATIONS HAS INCREASED IN THE LAST FEW YEARS AROUND THE PEARLAND AREA . I REALLY DON'T KNOW WHY THIS IS HAPPENING HERE BUT IT IS ALSO HAPPENING IN MY HOMELAND , THE PHILIPPINES WHICH STILL HAS THE ONLY ROMAN CATHOLIC MAJORITY IN ASIA . ALOT OF CATHOLICS THERE ARE BECOMING MUSLIM OR PROTESTANT CHIRSTIAN . IS IT CERTAIN DOCTRINES THE CHURCH HAS THAT IS CAUSING THE EXODUS ? I DON'T KNOW BUT THE FORMER CATHOLICS WHO ACCEPTED ISLAM I HAVE TALKED TO THINK IT HAS ALOT TO DO WITH THE DETERIORATION OF MORAL VALUES WITHIN THE CHURCH THAT CAUSED THEM TO LEAVE ...

Why would a person leave a belief and way of life just because a few people within that organization did wrong? That makes no sense! We belong to certain denominations because of believing in a particular God and in particular teachings. We worship the Creator, not the creation. If anything, they/we should pray for those poor, misguided people within that denomination.

Speaking of Catholicism, has anyone but me noticed that the staff of Channel 13 are very proud Catholics? They ran three different specials on the building of the Co-Cathedral and gave nearly daily updates on it's building.

Actually, I consider it scary that the mainstream media seems to be staunchly Catholic. The Pope sneezes, and it's headline news. Meanwhile, other religions have HUGE news, and it's ignored. Does anyone here know that the Methodist very nearly split in half in 2004? Of course not, the Pope was blessing some baby.

Actually, the never ending flow of illegals across the border is supplementing Catholics across the Southwest US.

The Catholic Church has existed for 2008 years; it has its ups and downs. Personally, I think they should allow women to be priests or at least deacons. My aunt is a deacon in the Lutheran church. Or they may have to allow priests to be married again; they were a long time ago, but believe it or not, they were not allowed to have sex with their wives. Very strange. The disciples were married and I'm sure they had sex with their wives. Sometimes the church loses its way along the 2008 years it has existed. But the church is not about the "officials" but it has always been about the people. Last time there was a big rift in the church, the Protestant Reformation and Martin Luther occurred. Maybe we'll see something like that again.

I am not only a devout Catholic nut I'm also an ex-nun. I left the Church over twenty years ago just to learn that my life is empty without it. The Church is both human and divine. The human makes mistakes (lots of them) but the Divine keeps it going. Will the Church ever die - No! There will always be those who can see beyond the human and isn't that what faith is all about! For this Catholic, I'm glad to be back home.

Sorry dudester but you are wrong. The near split of the Mehtodist Church actually got a lot of coverage. The reason news about the Catholic church makes headlines is sheer numbers. I've worked i na numner of nerwsrooms over the years and I have to tell you, they've been anythign but staunchly pro-catholic. If the mainstream media were, do you think there would be so much coverage of the priest molestation scandal? Unlikely.

I have to disagree with dudester. The Methodist chuch spilt did get coverage. However it's all about numbers. There are far more Catholics worldwide than Methodists. That's why it gets more play. I have worked in a number of newsrooms over the years. They have been antyhing but pro-Catholic environments. If the mainstream media were pro-Cathiolic I doubt the priest sex scandal would have received as much coverage as it did.

I WONDER HOW MUCH THE NEW CATHEDRAL WAS TO BUILD ? ALL THE IMPORTED ITALIAN MARBLE MUST HAVE COST A GRIP . I HEARD THE CATHOLIC CHURCH STILL HAS HUGE PROPERTIES AND REAL ESTATE ALL OVER THE EARTH . THE GOLD AND SILVER USED IN MASS ARE QUITE COSTLY LOOKING . FINANCIALLY THE CHURCH LOOKS IN GOOD SHAPE .

I've always see the Pope get headlines. When the Methodist church started having it's problems with gays trying to remake the church, I carefully paid attention to the media.

When Rev. Kerry in Nebraska broke church rules by marrying a gay couple, that story got coverage, but it's because the media has a pro gay bent.

When it was announced the Methodist church narrowly avoided a split, I flipped through the channels that night. The story got ten seconds on over the air TV, however the Pope was traveling at the time and got anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes of coverage.

I started paying closer attention after that. I noticed that when a Catholic story was reported, it seem,s the media knew exactly who to talk to. If a story involved a Protestant religion, the photographer had awkward angles and the reporter looked very much out of place and uncomfortable.

The final part came together when The Da Vinci Code came out. The book is very much anti Catholic, but reporters fearing the movie would also be, I actually saw them try to warn people not to go. I saw it on local and national news.
