There are 2 types of antivenin, one is produced from the bloods antibodies in horses or sheep. From 1954 the only source for years was the anti venomon from horses. If you are sensitive or allergic to horses you will be strictly monitored to ensure you do not develop a fatal allergic reaction.
In recent years sheep have started to create antivenin for those sensitive to horses. One of the antivenins produced by sheep and approved to us is CRO-FAB it has a special enzyme process used to reduce the risk of allergic reactions. With the new enzyme treatment in CRO-FAB allows the antivenin to be cleared from the body more rapidly, this may result in additional treatments.
Treating snake bites:
Basic techniques are now suggested to be used, no more cutting the skin and sucking out the venom this can do more harm than good.
Stay Calm!
Wash the area with soap and water
Immobilize the bitten area if possible
Get medical help.
Get to a hospital to ensure prompt medical attention.
If you can’t get to the hospital within 30 minutes you can wrap a bandage 2 to 4 inches above the bite to help slow the venom. The wrapped bandage should not cut off the flow of blood from a artery or vein. A good rule is to make the ban d lose enough to fit a finger under the bandage.
A suction cup from a snake kit may be placed over the bite which will help draw the venom out of the bite without cutting.
Snake kits can be purchased commercially especially if you plan on going in the wild. It should be included in all first kits.
If you have been previously treated with antivenom from a horse you will most be likely be sensitive to horse products for the rest of their life.
