So, my oldest lil' guy just turned 4, and I've really been encouraging independence.  WHOA!  Be oh-so careful what you ask for!   Drum roll....

We're at a local hospital visiting a friend, when Zach decides he's WAY too old to go in the ladie's room with his mother (moi).  So, he insists on going into the men's room - OR ELSE (for the 1st time alone).  All I can think is - "There's NO WAY I'm sending a freshly turned 4-year old child into a HUGE MEN's room alone".

A sweet nurse hears the battle... and actually gets a security guard to go into the men's room with him.

SO - what did that teach him?  NOW everywhere we go in public - he says, "Well, just go get me a policeman - one with a gun - & I'll be okay".

YIKES - like that's going to happen!   What's a loving  parent to do?

He learns quick so he got you on this one! I had boys so I went with them. Of course that was way before we worried about all the things that can happen with all the weird pedifiles roaming around now. My only suggestion is make an attempt to explain to him the dangers of someone so young going into a strange restroom alone. Hopefully there will be a serviceman or security guard close to assist you. You do have a difficult task but knowing how sharp my VP is she can handle it just fine. I wish I could give a good answer to that one. Maybe I wouldn't make a good president after all!

I'd probably stand there for a second and ask the next person out or a person who just went in to let you know on their way out if there was anybody was still in there and if the coast was clear, I'd probably let him go on his own and stand guard at the door, not allowing anyone to go in until he got out. This is why gender-neutral bathrooms are so important. A single stall with a lock on the door. If you are a caregiver to someone of the opposite sex, you don't have these issues. I have no idea what I'm going to do when Patrick is 21 and I have to take him into the women's bathroom with me. People look at me strangely now with him almost 13 until they realize he isn't your typical teen.

Hey M,

That's funny...I always ask a policeman to come into the restroom with me too...what are the odds that your son and me feel the same way?

PBMom, that is a tough situation. I do get excited when I see a "family restroom" - but it seems like those are only in malls.

Melissa, I love to have fun and mostly pick on people who have a sense of humor. You have a great sense of humor so watch out cause I can always come up with something!

I know a couple of Wal-Mart's that have them along with Target. I know you're a Wally World shopper if memory serves me cause of the old bitty who complained about the shopping cart (or buggy as we call them in Texas). Of course I might be mistaken but I'm never wrong! Yeah right!

When our daughter was very young, my X would carry a bandanna with him. When she had to go, he'd blindfold her and take her into the mens room.

He got the idea out of the movie "3 Men and a Little Lady". It worked perfectly.

And they have 'family restrooms' in the movie theaters too. A lot of times, they are right next to the auditoriums, but you gotta know where to look.

I enjoy anchoring the 9pm news at Fox 26 and also serving as Medical Reporter. My favorite parts of the day are hanging out in the O.R. in scrubs, then heading back to the station to get behind the anchor desk. One of my other favorite roles is being a mother. I was blessed with a son two years ago, and he has helped me see the world from a new perspective. I enjoy everything just a little more, now! I certainly look at medical reports in a new way, and understand more how important it is to help keep our viewers healthy & happy!
