KENSWIFES DAILY GRIND COFFEE HOUSE

This is for all of you that are computer literate LOL!!  I'm not sure, but I think my computer is getting sick-hope it's not a virus.  I have McAffee, Ad Aware, and SpyBlaster on it-so I can't imagine a little intruder getting in it--but I guess anythings possible!!  I do all of the temporary file clean outs etc. on a daily basis-remove cookies etc.  BUT.................

it has started making a loud "winding" noise where the fan is--only if we are on the computer for  a long period of time OR if we are on a page that has alot of "flash" stuff on it.  Sometimes when we are on "My Space" it runs very slow and the cursor moves in very slow motion.  I have plenty of memory left-so I doubt that could be the problem.

I had the computer cleaned out etc. last year due to viruses--and it was basically "rebuilt".

ANY suggestions out there?  Anything I can check on myself before paying big bucks to get it looked at???

Is it a laptop? I had this problem with my laptop and the area where the fan is at gets very, very hot and it would slow down. I had to send it in to get fixed. They had to fix a wire in it.

Sounds like the PC power supply is going out. It would account for all your systems, since it is that fan that keeps the PS cool. You could be getting unregulated power to your mainboard, causing various "unexplainable" symptoms. When it gets too hot, it will shut down completely, until it cools off again. You should be able to go into any PC store and pick one up, BUT be careful to make sure it will fit your system.

Kenswife,

I also had a Compaq PC, but had too many problems with it. I got rid of it and switched to a Mac. No problems since then.

You should run a disk cleanup, disk defarg (to clean up fragmented files), there is a program called Ccleaner that you can run to stop programs from starting up when the PC is booted up. If you have a lot of unwanted programs in your add and remove programs you may want to uninstall them after uninstalling there is a software called registry expert that will remove any traces of the uninstalled program from the PC I would suggest doing all of these things about once a week (Thats when I do mine :-))...just preventative maintence

Also Hard Drive space is not the same as RAM (or Random Access Memory). RAM is used to run programs while the hard drive space is used to store them. Take for instance just because you have a 160GB hard drive doesn't mean your computer will run lighting fast if you only have 512MB RAM...about 2GB of RAM is pretty good for a home computer even 1GB is good for normal use (Check how much you have my right clicking on my computer>>properties and on the general tab you should see it)

The loud noise could be from your computer over heating...Make sure your fan is spinning properly and nothing is blocking the vents (allow it to breathe) Also if you have a air compressor or the compressed air in the can you may want to remove the computer casing and blow any dust out of there.

6 years is a while if you are able to and want to you can always look into buying a new one and selling me your old one....LOL....I would love to rebuild it

If you have any more questions please comment back

Upinsmoke-I've already done the disk clean up, defragmentor, and gone to the program files. Everything that is left on there is what I use. I checked to make sure spyware and adware weren't anywhere around either. I had AdAware, Spyware Blaster AND McAfee AntiVirus-all of which I do daily updates on. The last time something like this happened I had viruses on my PC-I didn't have enough protection on it LOL! NOW I have an over abundance of it. The person that fixed it the last time ( a patient of mine-but he has his own PC business also)--had to delete my word program completely because it was ruined by the viruses-he was able to save my pictures by putting them on CD's--but alot of my documents were lost. THEN he put some stupid slow program called Open Office on it-which is a free word processor--it takes up a whole heap of space AND it takes FOREVER to even come up for me to type something LOL!

As for a new PC-can't do it LOL-too expensive and witha son in college--every last red cent goes to books and tuition!! He has a laptop that I need to get hooked up on the internet. I have all the wireless stuff (D-Link) but I haven't taken the time to figure out the setting on his PC--it's soooooooooo time consuming for computer dummies like myself LOL!

The fan has ample room under my desk-sometimes my legs do get very warm under the desk from teh heat the PC puts out. I always put it on stand by when we aren't using it. That seems to "give it a break"--but it still doesn't run as fast as it should LOL!

I have a 512MB RAM Pentium (R) CPU with 1.70GHZ. So I g

I've been told by our company tech that having too many programs such as McAfee, Spyware and AdAware antivirus programs actually are a problem for some computers. You might look into having someone (a PC professional) delete that slow program out - Open Office. Have them upgrade it if they can. Also, some of the PC professionals can clean your hard drive for you. Just a thought. Think of it has PC diagnostics yearly physical.

Well, you do all the right things and I assume you are using XP.
A tech. should have cleaned and recovered your word files which are still there even after a clean and format.
A company exists who can still do the recovery at a cost if files were important enough.
Remember to always do a backup pref. onto an external drive ($50/60)
McAfee always pops up when there's a problem and known to conflict with most programs.
P.C. magazine advises Avast anti-virus free download for basics.
6 years is old for today, it's near to a 7 year itch !! and dust/grease/ pet fur can affect the fan and temp control (cooling is most important and less considered) Always try to stand a CPU at least 6 inches off the floor.
If you have I.P. online then be sure to have filters on each and every phone jack especially if you use a jack for satellite T.V.(will slow it down for sure w/out a filter)
Be sure the polarity is correct on each jack).
Router's as your D link will slow the system.
Most popular areas with high volume like my space will slow down even the fastest CPU's.
Could be hard drive noise (not fan) as most hard drives considered to survive 5 years max and will eventually crash. Hope not.

Well good luck with your computer problems. I am a IT professional myself and would offer my computer services to you in a casual face-to-face conversation but you know the internet thing is kind of creepy but I am open to answer any questions if you may have any. :-)

I have found lil hidden and unsuspected intruders, when i go into myspace. I quickly unplug the internet before it can reach my computer. Norton Anti virus will quickly let me know that something.someone has tried to access my computer. I try not to stay on myspace for toooooo long. Besides I like it better here.
