KENSWIFES DAILY GRIND COFFEE HOUSE

NOW-that I have your attention LOL!  I was wondering how many of you suffer from migraine headaches and how often do you get them??

I suffer from migraines and seem to be getting them atleast 2 to 4 times a month, which is more than usual.  I HATE taking the prescription meds because they make me soooooooooo drowsy.  I WILL take them-if the migraine is unbearable-but if it's a weekday then I have to take another medication-like an over the counter one.  They physician I work for takes a "Sams Choice" Migraine Formula-which works for me sometimes--but the relief doesn't last all day and I find myself having to take 4 to 6 of them in a day.  Most over the counter meds have caffeine in them-which I find strange because they tell you to stay away from caffeine if you suffer from migraines.

What do you do for your migraines--other than taking prescription meds?  Are your migraines so debilitating that you are unable to function at your job?  Do you feel there is anything you eat or drink that causes an onset of your headache?  Does your headache also cause you to be nauseated?  What other signs/symptoms occur with your headaches??

Common symptoms of migraine include:

  • Throbbing or pulsating headache on one side of your head.
  • Moderate to severe headache intensity.
  • Your headache getting worse with routine physical activity.
  • Nausea, vomiting, or both.
  • Sensitivity to light and noise, and sometimes smells.

imitrex and relpak are excellent for treating migraines and don't (shouldn't) cause drowsiness or goofiness. excedrin migraine works if i catch it early. i only get 2 or 3 a year thank goodness. i vomited only once with a migraine - not fun. never could figure out what triggers or prevents it. definitely sensative to noise and light when they occur, not so much smell. i think caffeine is good for migraines because it causes vasoconstriction. nitroglycerin always gives people headaches because of its vasodilation qualities. have you had a CT or MRI? don't mean to scare ya, but you know what frequent migraines can be indicative of....

Hey girlfriend - sometimes migraines are a 'fringe benefit' of tmjd. I've found that a tens unit and sudafed (the ingredient pseudephedrin - not the brand name) helps tremendously with migraines too! Before I had tmj therapy, I couldn't ride in the car for 2 blocks or I would get so 'car sick' I would have 'dry heaves'. Then all I could do was go home, crawl into bed and pull the covers up over my head. Sometimes eating a little something will help too.

I don't have migraines, but I have headaches that are associated with something called idiopathic intracranial hypertension (also known as pseudotumor cerebri). It's caused by too much cerebrospinal fluid in my brain and causes a true pressure headache where it compresses everything in your head. I have to take Diamox, which they use to treat people who have glaucoma, to keep it under control, and I do craniosacral therapy with a physical therapist twice a month to keep my CSF flow unblocked.

I don't have migraines, but my hubby does. His solution is Excedrin Migraine. Of course, it helps when his wife massages his head, as well (LOL) but that's only a temporary fix.

He also takes Imitrex - but like you - ONLY when he has to. He just has excruciating pain, sometimes bright lights, sometimes nausea. Seems to happen a couple times a week - and we've never been able to put a common demoninator on it (food, drink, sleep, environment, etc.) Very frustrating!

Kenswife or Melissa: If you want a diary that my neurologist gave me to keep track of migraines and possible triggers, it is very comprehensive and not difficult. I scanned it in for another blogger and emailed it. If you are interested, let me know and I'll forward it on.

PB-I have the symptoms list--and what foods can trigger a migraine too LOL!

Melissa-I just started trying the Excedrin Migraine and it works pretty good. Imitrex makes me downright "loopy" LOL-I took it a few times and was walking around the house like I was drunk!! Ken does the same for me that you do for your hubby-he massages my neck and head-that always helps too!!

Kenswife: This goes beyond just food. I'll send it to you to see. Have you tried some alternative treatments, like craniosacral therapy?
