Michael Gonzalez and his wife were traveling on a Texas highway at 100 MPH to take their dying teacup poodle, Missy, to a vet. They were pulled over for speeding and delayed by 15 minutes by a rookie cop who replied, after being informed of the situation, "It's just a dog; you can get another one. relax." Missy died in the car during the ticketing of Gonzalez. Was he right or wrong? I, for one, would go to the ends of the earth to save Zoe's life. She is such a part of the family. I told Brittany that she has really brought us all together because she plays such a part in all of our lives. She does nothing wrong, she's affectionate and amusing, and we all love her dearly.

REALLY sad, as I am a animal lover!
The speed is a issue, but the traffic conditions should also be a issue, perhaps?
Speed has been determined by the appeals court to be (basically) driving irresponsibly.

I think the officer should be admonished, & be liabel for replacing the animal!
Maybe too many people don't consider the value of a life, whether it is a animal or human!
I would pursue a civil lawsuit "just for principle"!

The thing that really upset me about it was the statement that it would be treated as a "training issue".That might be true as far as it goes with his employment, but his liabality would go into the civil courts . Shame on him for the needless pain he has caused this family. No one knows if the little dog could have been saved or not....but it should have been every chanch. It is as bad as saying"it's just a kid...you can have another one"!

I have to say that I believe that the officer should have been more understanding. If he was informed of the situation immediately, then perhaps he could have provided an escort to ensure an accident didn't occur. Then...write a ticket if he felt he needed to do so. But to delay the situation and thereby allowing the pet to die...that was just wrong IMHP.

I think that community service at a shelter is a good idea along with a face-to-face apology to the family. As much as I love my sweet dog and consider her a member of the family, I see no value of suing the officer. She could never be "replaced." But if I could save someone from having a similar experience with this officer or others, that would be something of value. It would have been nice if he provided an escort to the family, or even transferred the dog to his car to help speed the process along, that would have been a real "feel good" story and great PR for the law enforcement agency.

100mph bugs me, but i agree with foehammer. the officer could have helped. that said, i think suing the officer is wrong. even though he may have been heartless, he was just doing his job.

I SMELL A LAWSUIT ...

the law suit may be filed on principle alone but they will only get replacement cost...I am a huge pet person...all of my children have 4 legs, so i do agree it's wrong, but the courts see pets as just a diffrent form of live stock, and unfortunately no one will award pain and suffering on a cow...100 miles an hour on an open stretch of highway is really not that high...only 30 over the spped limit, and for any of us that have had a severly injured family member or even a new born on the way have been a bit lead footed at one time or another. At least the couple had their emergency flashers on...it's not le they were driving crazy, just fast...the officer obviously forgot his job is to SERVE and protect...he frogot the serve part...he should have offered them an escort and written the ticket once they were at the vet hospital if he needed a ticket on his book that bad. I don't know if a lawsuit would solve the problem, but it waould at least give the guy a headache...which is nothing compared to the heartache the family is going thru. He needs to do some community service with the humane society, or for people with service animals. I am sure he would have not said,"it's just a dog" if it would have been a K-9 with a serious injury

Pets are family members. Yes, he should have offered to escort thema nd if he felt the need to ticket them, then do it after they arrived at the vet.

Cops are notorious for disregarding animals. Heck, cops in League City, Santa Fe, La Porte, the City of Tiki Island, and even my own hometown of Pasadena are infamous for using strays as target practice, or brushing off animal cruelty complaints because they're just 'strays'.

If I was speeding to save my dog or cats' life and a cop tried to pull me over..well, he could just chase me to the hospital and ticket me there.
