There was a blog written a few days ago about how someone was aggravated by the number of panhandlers at intersections. At the corner of 59 and FM 1314 in Porter, there are always young teens holding up signs advertising a car wash or asking for money to support whatever project their school district feels it does not have enough money to support. I know this happens all over the place. There has been so much emphasis on how irresponsibly people drive on this blog, that I was wondering why any parent would allow their child to participate in such a dangerous activity. I know PBmom is currently investigating the state of school districts financial status' in Texas. Are these school districts really that broke that children have to stand on street corners and beg?

If they would stop paying lawyers for stupid stuff (like instead of just fulfilling a request for public information, they are handing it off to their attorneys who are charging them by the hour), and building professional-type athletic training fields (one of the ISD's up in North Texas actually has an indoor training facility to use when it's raining, something that they share with the Dallas Cowboys, but you better believe the Dallas Cowboys didn't chip in to build the facilities. I went to Patrick school's first PTO meeting when I found out money was being raised to get an accessible playground that was compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, I asked them why they felt this was their responsibility to fund. I told them that it was the district's responsibility to provide these things. I heard at the end of the year the district "chipped in" for half of the cost. I also found out the PTO gave about $4000 to teachers to help get them training. Again, I said to them, this is wonderful that you want to do this, but again, this is the district's responsibility to train its personnel. I told them there was so many other wonderful things they could be doing with their money, like helping kids in the school who couldn't afford school supplies, or helping teachers pay for stuff the district refuses to pay them back for that went directly towards their classrooms, etc. I remember at another school, the PTO actually had to pay for a new roof for the school because this school wasn't on the list for repairs for a few years and the leaks had reached critical propo

proportion. Now extracurricular activities, schools don't have to fund (except football and other sports). They even pay for hotel and meals for these kids when they are away overnight. So the debate club has to raise its own money to go to the national debate team's competition, etc. Chassan posted a blog about local superintendants' salaries and my superintendant, with a population of 46,000 students to care for, makes more than the vice president of the United States. I believe HISD's superintendant makes somewhere in the $400,000 range. This just disgusts me.

Kagua,

It's against state law to stand in the street to make solicitations.

If a solicitor is injured by a vehicle while soliciting in the street, he or she would have no claim that would stand up in court.

Chassan,

I don't think I've ever seen any kids standing in the street, but mostly on the side of the road. This is nothing new. We used to do this when I was in school (many moons ago). We actually did it so our parents wouldn't have to feel like they should have to pay. We always had car washes and stuff (same at church), and we would advertise that it was free, but donations accepted. Personally, I don't have a problem with them raising funds for an outing that was devised by them, or their teachers that is not in the normal curriculum.

i've seen a lot of school kids on the streets holding sign for carwashes, baked goods, and stuff. in all fairness, i don't think what they are doing is begging. they are offering goods or services only to those who want it. beggars will get in anyones face and ask for money cause they are "Hungry". i feel as long as they are will to do some work for it, why not help them out. it's usually for school stuff that they might not be able to afford without the help.

Y do u say that the only thing schools should pay is sports? Aren't any of the other clubs good enough? I think they should be fair with all the kids each of the kids have different talents that can help them become successful in school..

I have no problem with kids attempting to raise money for extracurricular activities. I think far too much money is spent on sporting events (particularly football) that other beneficial and admirable activities are often neglected. Obviously, I am not an expert, but I see far too many children standing at dangerous intersections in an attempt to garner funds for things like band trips. "Help Send Us to NY; Car Wash in Kroger Parking Lot, $5.00!" Then, I see the Girl Scouts, often with an adult present, sitting at a table in front of the grocery store, selling cookies. I'm making a comparison as to what I feel is safe as opposed to what I do not. People drive on shoulders and over boulevards in an attempt to pass others. When my daughter was in school and in band, I did not allow her to participate in that type of fund-raising. I much preferred the catalogues full of over-priced food and knick-knacks that my husband and I could distribute amongst friends and family.

Kagua I'm not talking about kids in school or real panhandlers. I am talking about the guys that are selling newspapers on street corners that are trying to make a living where all else had failed them. I feel real bad for them. (They get paid very little for each paper that they sell- as they stand ALL day long in the heat of the day.)I intentionally try & keep change & extra dollar bills in my truck, just "for them to get a drink... hopefully a bottle of water- but who am I to choose or judge?" I feel the Lord has blessed me & my husband with a vechile to drive & a roof over our head's, as well as watching over my children & family. & then we have the guys selling water or candy with there little blue flyers explaining their prior promblems of the demon of addictions to everyone & anyone for help! They're trying & there's nothing wrong with that. It makes my heart feel good when I can actually help someone who needs it... even if it is a pocketful of change or a dollar or two out of our own blessings!
