There is an old saying in baseball... "Pitching and Defense wins championships." And, most of the time it is proven to be true. The deal the Astros made today to acquire the services of veteran shortstop Miguel Tejada fills neither the pitching or defensive categories. The Astros dismal season last year, had very little to do with the offensive side of things. Besides Roy Oswalt, the pitching staff was hideous. The bullpen couldn't close an umbrella, let alone close out an inning. Sure Tejada provides some nice pop and protection for Berkman and Lee in the middle of the lineup, but you cannot win a championship by playing the ol' game of "let's out slug 'em." The price tag is also very high for Tejada. Not only did it cost you five players, but he is due $13 million for this season. After that, what you're paying Kaz Matsui, Carlos Lee, and Roy O, there's not going to be a whole lot left in the till to go out and pay for some quality pitching. Now, I do know that there are some good young pitchers in the farm system, but the Astros need some proven pitching help NOW. Tejada's career numbers are nice, hitting just under 300 home runs with an average just under .300 for his career, and being a right-handed power hitter, he should be hitting a lot of balls into the Crawford Boxes at the Juice Box. However, the Astros should have invested those eight figures that Tejada will make, into someone who get 200+ strikeouts, instead of someone who will strikeout close to 200 times. If the Astros don't address their pitching woes, it will be another long season of looking up at the Cardinals, Cubs, & Brewers in the standings. I will still be pulling hard for them to do well, but I just believe this was the wrong trade, at the wrong time, for all the wrong reasons.
