Is it just me or has reading the Sports page of the newspaper, or websites gotten to be like reading the Crime and Punishment reports?  If it's not dogfighting, it's illegal gambling, fighting, domestic assult, drugs, and yes even murder.  What is it about the money and fame that just makes these athletes loco?!  It's like Don Henley's "Dirty Laundry", watching Sports News or reading about it, is no longer hearing about what happened in the games.  It's about what goes on off the field and what happens in the personal lives of these players.  Now don't get me wrong, when they commit crimes, like Vick's alledged dog fighting or this gambling ring involving the NBA referee, it should be a top story.  My point is, I'd remember when the worst thing you'd hear about, in Sports news, was a player testing positive for drugs like Darryl Strawberry or the late Steve Howe, or even alcoholism like Mickey Mantle.  But, it seems like ever since the OJ trial in 1994, that Sports Crimes have escalated to a whole new level of low.  You hear about something just about everyday that involves an athlete, coach, referee, owner, or someone affiliated with a professional sports team.  Now, I realize that we have many more medium of media these days.  There are cameras everywhere, watching everyone.  There are 24 Hour News and Sports Networks.  But, I would love to turn on the Sports news just one night and not hear about any crimes involving athletes or anyone involving professional sports.  I guess when you give some people so much money and power, that they just can't handle it.  Is it a boredum factor?  After you buy everything you could possibly want, travel everywhere you want to go, do everything you want to do... do these players just get bored and decide to start commiting crimes?  Like Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, and Lindsay Lohan, these people just have more money than the good sense that God gave them.

I guess it really makes you appreciate guys like Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell, who have spent their lives as model citizens during their time with the Astros.  It's one of the reasons David Robinson is my all-time favorite player of any sport as well as my role model, after my own father.  Maybe if these troubled athletes started doing things charitable with their time and money, they wouldn't be proned to do wrong during their free time.  Charles Barkley once uttered the phrase, "I am not a role model."  And, as much as I like Charles, I never heard a bigger bunch of mularkey in my life.  All professional athletes are, like it or not, role models.  It is up to them to represent themselves and their teams with professionalism and integrity.  Some friends of mine and I were talking earlier this evening, and one of them said, "the window of opportunity is so small", meaning that a athlete averages between 8 and 16 years of playing professional sports.  That's not a lot, considering that I have been working in the media for 20 years now, and I've got about another 30 years to do before retirement (God Willing).  These Athletes need to enjoy their time playing their respective games, because just like Biggio, 20 years can go by in the blink of an eye.  Keep your noses clean and do right by the sport you play, the team you play for, the fans who support you, the city you represent, your friends, family, and love ones, as well as your personal and professional reputation.

As I mentioned in my previous Biggio post, I mentioned I am going to Cooperstown this coming weekend for the Hall-Of-Fame inductions of Cal Ripken, Jr and Tony Gwynn.  Two guys who are the epitome of what a professional athlete should be.  I would implore to all athletes, who need a role model to look up to, try one of these guys, or both of them.  They exude professionalism and class.

When Craig Biggio made his major league debut for the Houston Astros on June 26, 1988, no one knew that we would be watching the greatest player to ever don an Astros uniform.   Who is Craig Alan Biggio?  Born December 14, 1965 in Smithtown, New York, a small bourogh on Long Island.  Grew up a Yankees fan, went to Seton Hall University.  He went undrafted, but obviously the Astros saw something in him.  He hit .344 in his minor league career.  He was called up and quickly made an impact in the second half of the 1988 season.  He was named the starting catcher for the club in 1989.  He went on to win the SIlver Slugger Award that season.  Because of his tremendous speed and quickness, the Astros thought it would prolong his career, if they'd move him to another position.  The Astros tried him in the outfield periodically in 1990 and 1991.  And despite being an All-Star Catcher in '91, they moved him to second base during Spring Training in 1992.  How many Catchers have made the transition to Gold Glove Second Basemen?!  I don't know any besides our Biggio.  Then in 2003, when the club was able to sign Jeff Kent as a free agent, they decided to try Biggio in a very difficult Center Field Position at Minute Maid Park (it's the only park with a hill, and it's 436 feet to straight away center).  Not exactly the idea position for a 37 year old with limited outfield experience.  But, once again, Biggio proved that he could handle it.  With Kent's departure in 2005, the Astros moved Biggio back to second base.  Here are just a few of the remarkable stats of his wonderful career...

He is the only player in MLB History that has 600 Doubles, 3000 Hits, 250 Home Runs, and 400 Stolen Bases.

He is the Astros career leader in Games Played, At-Bats, Runs, Hits, Doubles, and Extra Base Hits.

He his a Seven Time All-Star.

Hold the NL Record for Lead-Off Home Runs with 52.

Is The All-Time Leader in Hit-By-Pitches, with 288, and never once charged the mound.

On June 28, 2007, He became the 27th player in MLB History with 3,000 Hits.

He is also only 13 Home Runs shy of 300.

Career Stats as of tonight:

2,799 Games

10,703 At-Bats

1,827 Runs

3,016 Hits

661 Doubles

55 Triples

287 Home Runs

1160 Runs-Batted-In

413 Stolen Bases

.282 Career Batting Average

If you ask me, these are the stats of a first-ballot Hall-Of-Famer.  I will be heading to Cooperstown this week for the induction of two other Great Hall-Of-Fame Inductees, who played their whole careers with one team and meant as much to their cities, as Biggio means to us... Cal Ripken, Jr (with Baltimore) and Tony Gwynn (with San Diego).  I can't wait to ask the folks up there, what their opinion with Biggio getting"The Hall Call" on his first try.  I hope they will tell me that it will be a shoe-in, because if Gwynn (who is my favorite non-Met player of all time, that's why I'm going) and Ripken can get in on their first try, then Biggio deserves it, too.

But beyond the baseball diamond, Biggio has meant just as much to this city off the field, as he has meant to the starting lineup.  He has raised over $2,000,000 for his favorite charity, The Sunshine Kids.  It just goes to prove that good players can do just as much good off the field, as they do on it.  I was happy to hear in his press conference today that he will still be living here, after he retires.  It would be hard enough next season, with his absence on the field, but it would really stink if he were gone all together.

It is the end of an era, with Bagwell gone and Biggio leaving.  Let's hope that Hunter Pence and some others will step up and fill those very big shoes, not only on the field, but in our city, as well.

There is sometimes when tragedy hits a little close to home. It did for me this morning. Former Astros Minor Leaguer and Class AA Tulsa Drillers Coach Mike Coolbaugh was struck in the head with a line drive off the bat of TIno Sanchez of the Arkansas Travelers, in North Little Rock, Arkansas last night. It happened in the ninth inning and the game was suspended after Coolbaugh was struck. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The reason why this hits close to home, is because he grew up right down the street from me in San Antonio. We went to Windcrest Elementary School together. And, while He and I weren't good friends, he was with my cousin. I do remember him coming to my house and playing sports with my cousin. It is very, very sad. My family moved away a couple of years later, and I never saw Mike again, but I do remember him quite well. Coolbaugh went on to play High School ball at Teddy Roosevelt High School there and was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 16th Round in 1990. He bounced around the minor leagues quite a bit, and did not play his first game with a Major League Team, until he debuted in 2002 with Milwaukee. He would go on to play 44 games in the Major Leagues with Milwaukee and St. Louis. He spent three years in the Astros organization, including in 2005 when he was the MVP of then AAA New Orleans, as he hit .281 with 27 Home Runs and 101 RBI. He had just joined the Tulsa Drillers staff on July 3rd. Tulsa is the AA affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Mike's older brother Scott, also played Major League Baseball in parts of four seasons with the Rangers, Padres, and Cardinals. Mike was married, with two young sons and he and his wife were expecting another baby in October. So, my thoughts can't help to drift back to 1981, when I first met Mike and his family. My prayers and thoughts are with them and his wife and children during this difficult time.

Another Golf Major, another First Time Major Victor.  Padraig Harrington won the British Open in a four-hole playoff with Sergio Garcia.  Once again, Garcia had a nice lead headed into the final day, but once again, he failed to make it stand up.  Garcia finished with a -7 under 277 combined score over the four days.  However, shot a 73 today.  Harrington's 67 (-7) finish with the playoff hole victories, were enough to give the Irishman, the Claret Jug.  It's the first time in 60 years, someone from Ireland has won the tourney.  Stewart Cink had the best American finish at -4.  Tiger Woods finished tied for 12th, with a -2 finish.  Tiger has yet to win a major tournament this year.  With the win, Harrington moves up to #6 in the worldwide standings for PGA Golfers.

Well, the Yankees may be trailing the Red Sox by eight games, but they definitely had an offensive awakening on Sunday, as they beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays by two touchdowns and a field goal... 21-4.  Bobby Abreu went 3-4 with a home run and three RBI.  A-Rod hit his league leading 34th home run, and had 3 RBI.  Robinson Cano went 4-6, with 3 RBI and undrafted 1B Shelley Duncan, just called up from AAA Scranton Wilkes-Barre on Saturday, went 2-4, with two home runs and 4 RBI.  Former Astro and Deer Park's own Andy Pettitte was the recipient of the all the run support.  He pitched 6 innings, giving up 8 hits, 3 earned runs, 3 walks, and 8 strikeouts for his 6th win of the season.  The Yanks also cranked out 25 hits in the victory.  To end on a positive note though, the Red Sox won, so they still remain eight games in front of the Yanks.  I guess my Mets bias is showing.

Woody Williams pitched his best game of the season, as he pitched 8 innings, giving up 0 earned runs, no walks, and 3 strike outs as he and Brad Lidge teamed up to shut out the Pirates 1-0.  Lidge is now 3 for 3 in save opportunities in his last three games.  Pirates pitcher Shane Youman definitely deserved better for the Pirates, as he also pitched 8 innings, 4 hits, 1 earned run, 3 strikeouts, and 2 walks.  Luke Scott's RBI single proved to be the difference.  Rookie sensation Hunter Pence left the game early, as he came up lame sliding into second base.  He injured his wrist further trying to hit, in his next trip to the plate.  X-Rays proved to be negative, so that is good news.  His status will remain day-to-day.

And, Barry Bonds and the whole stars lining up to break Hank Aaron's Home Run record in Milwaukee, well it didn't happen.  Bonds's went homerless at Miller Park this weekend.  But don't throw that cosmic irony out the window quite yet.  Bonds will now face the team Hank Aaron spent most of his career with, including the team he broke Babe Ruth's home run record with, the Atlanta Braves.  Tomorrow he will face Braves pitcher John Smoltz, who he has hit eight career home runs against.  The Giants open up a seven game homestand with the Braves and Florida Marlins.  If he doesn't get three home runs at home, he will have to do it against the Giants arch rivals, the Dodgers, at Chavez Ravine or at San Diego, where he has the most road home runs in his career.

Well, if you're lucky enough to be in Pittsburgh watching the Astros at PNC Park this weekend, I can say I'm very jealous of you.  Outside of my hometown, San Antonio, Pittsburgh is my favorite city.  Like Houston, which people say is polluted and dirty, Pittsburgh gets a bad reputation that it just doesn't deserve.  Like any town, it has its bad parts, but it is overall a beautiful city, with lots of great people who work hard and play harder, which should be the philosophy of life.  And, if you are in The 'Burgh for the Astros games, I highly recommend stopping by Primanti Brothers and getting the #2 Best Seller with the #1 Best Seller.  I won't ruin it for you on the #2, but the #1 Best Seller is an Ice-Cold Iron City Beer.  The Original Hot Dog Shop (The O as they call it), Benkovitz Seafood, and Quaker Steak and Lube are also quality dining joints to patronize when visiting the Steel City.  Oh, and be sure to say "Pass The Heinz".  Mentioning Hunt's Ketchup might get you thrown into the Three Rivers.  Anyway, on to the sports where your Astros survived against the Pirates 2-1.  I'm hesitant to say they beat the Pirates.  It's more like the Pirates beat themselves.  They had lead off hits in five innings and could only score one of them.  They also had the bases loaded with one out in the 9th, and could not score the tying run.  They left 11 men on base.  Roy Oswalt looked more like the all-star pitcher that he is, giving up 7 hits, one earned run, four strikeouts, and no walks for the victory.  Brad Lidge got his second save.  The Astros victory sent the Pirates into the basement of the NL Central.  Which probably means it's time to shift focus to the Steelers in Pittsburgh (as it should be!).

Over in Scotland this morning, Tiger Woods rebounded after a rough day yesterday, but still finds himself in the middle of the pack, tied for 15th in the British Open.  Woods shot a 69 this morning, which was much better than the 74 he shot yesterday.  Sergio Garcia still leads the pack at -9, but has yet to tee off.  The big winner of the day is Steve Stricker, who shot a 64, and is now just three shots back of the lead at -6, after this morning's play.  Phil Mickelson still having issues, did not make the cut.

Atlanta Falcons Quarterback Michael Vick might be taking a paid leave of absence to concentrate on his court battles.  The Falcons are urging Vick that it would be better for him and the team to clear up the problems, so he can concentrate on football, that is if he's proven to be not guilty and doesn't have to go to jail.  If he does, former Lion and Dolphin, Joey Harrington, third stringer Chris Redman, and former Georgia Bulldog DJ Shockley will all try to compete for the temporary, or maybe not-so-temporary starting job.

And the FBI is investigating an NBA Official in a gambling probe.  Tim Donaghy is under investigation for gambling on NBA games over the past two seasons.  He may be best known for officiating the game at The Palace of Auburn Hills, between Detroit and Indiana, where a fight broke out in the stands between players and fans, which resulted in many lengthy suspensions.  Because of the nature of the investigation, few details are being released.  But, I'd be willing to place an even money bet that because of this, the City of Las Vegas can kiss any chance of the NBA moving to Las Vegas, as they wanted, goodbye.  It was rumored Seattle Super Sonics Owner Clay Bennett, might want to move the team there, if he can't get a new arena deal done by this Fall's deadline in Seattle.  However, Bennett will probably have to pursue other options, like his hometown of Oklahoma City, if he can't get an arena agreement in Seattle.

You know life takes some funny twists and turns
sometimes. Occasionally, you get those moments in history where it
seems like all the stars line up perfectly and it produces some amazing
results. On July 20, 1976, Henry Aaron hit home 755 off of California
Angels pitcher Dick Drago at Milwaukee County Stadium. It would be the
final time he would hit a home run in his Hall-Of-Fame career. For the
past 21 years that record has stood. Enter one Barry Lamar Bonds,
entering Friday night, he was still two home runs away from tying
Aaron's record. Where are his Giants playing a three game series this
weekend? Milwaukee, yes that same Milwaukee, where Hank Aaron started
his career with the Braves, before moving to Atlanta. And, that same
Milwaukee that Hank Aaron ended his career with, wearing a Brewers
uniform. I will go you one better in the irony category. Guess who
was playing Left Field for the California Angels the night that Hank
hit his 755th Home Run? His name was Bobby Bonds, Barry's Late
Father. Is it in the stars for Barry to surpass Hank this weekend in
Milwaukee where the current Home Run King began and ended his career,
and Barry's father there that night in 1976 to witness history? I guess
we'll have to wait and see. Bonds was 0-4 last night in his first game
of the series. We'll see if the universe lines up perfectly over the
next couple of games, or if it was just all pure coincidence.

Well Rockets fans, you can reach way back in the closet and knock those moth balls out of those #3 jerseys or you can go out to the garage and wash out those oil stains, because Stevie Franchise is a Rocketman, once again. After "burning out his fuse" in Orlando, New York, and stopping for a Starbucks and to pick up a check for $31 Million to leave Portland, Francis is a Rocket once again. He signed a two-year, six million dollar deal with Houston. He chose the Rockets over Miami, Dallas, and the Los Angeles Clippers, because he still makes his home here. Francis became a free agent after being traded from the Knicks to the Trail Blazers on draft day for Zach Randolph. Portland decided to buy out Francis's contract, which still had $34 million on it for the next two years, for $31 Million. As promised in my previous blogs, as a Spurs fan, I'm happy about it. As someone that wants to see the Rockets do well, when they are not playing San Antonio, it's frustrating. This team does not need Steve Francis. They don't need his bad attitude. He's injury prone. He only appeared in 44 games with the Knicks last year, averaging just over 11 points per game. Not to mention, his rebounds and assists have gone down, since leaving Houston. Francis averaged 19.3 Points-per-game, 6.1 Rebounds-per-game, and 6.4 Assists-per-game with the Rockets, from 1999-2004. The past three years with Orlando and New York, Francis averaged 16.4 Points-per-game, 5.5 Rebounds-per-game, and 4.7 Assists-per-game. However, most of the good numbers were with the Magic. His numbers really fell in New York. He averaged only 11.0 Points-per-game, 3.7 Assists-per-game, and his rebounding was basically non-existent at 1.5 per-game. He had more ejections and flagrant fouls than he did double-doubles in his time with the Knicks. I realize that he's only 30 years old and I'm sure there is still gas in the tank. However, do the Rockets really want to look to the past to help their future. Let's take a look at the Rockets/Francis Years:

1999-2000... 34--48 Rockets missed the playoffs.

2000-2001... 45-37 Rockets missed the playoffs.

2001-2002... 28-54 Rockets missed the playoffs.

2002-2003... 43-39 Rockets missed the playoffs.

2003-2004... 45-37 Rockets lose in First Round of playoffs to the Lakers and only win one game in the series.

Now, I realize the Rockets are more equipped for a playoff run now, than they were during Francis's first tenure. They didn't have McGrady (that's who they got for Francis), Yao was a rookie, they weren't as deep (they still need some better bench help), but is Francis and his extra baggage that he brings with him, really the answer? Personally, I think it is a reach and a bad one for new GM Daryl Morey and new Coach Rick Adelman. They've already decided to keep one head case in Bonzi Wells, now you add another in Steve Francis. And, will there be enough balls to go around?! McGrady likes to have the ball a lot, as does Yao, Bonzi, add Mike James and Francis to the mix? Will that make for good chemistry? I just see more issues than results. They did not need Steve Francis or his attitude, but the Rockets decided to sign that two-for-the-price-of-one contract, we'll see if it equals success at the end of the year, or we'll see if I can say, "I Told You So."

No winning streak for the Astros, they lost to the Nationals 7-6 yesterday.  Jason Jennings falls to 1-6 on the season.  Who'd of thought that a pitcher would have had a better record in Colorado than they would in other more pitching friendly venues?!

Well, while Yi Jianling is having trouble with the NBA, his fellow Chinese Teammate and Houston Rockets All-Star Center Yao Ming, is having trouble with the Chinese Government.  They are having issues with Yao Ming reporting late to training with the Chinese National Team.  They are saying he's taking too much time to recover after this season with the Rockets, planning his wedding, and making appearances for the Special Olympics and the 2008 Bejing Olympics Games.  The Chinese Media, which of course is part of the government, is saying that nothing should come before the national team.  And, that Yao should know that.  And that without Yao, the Chinese National Team won't even be competitive.  You could say the same for the Rockets.

More baskeball news, former Longhorn and new Seatlle Super Sonics star, Kevin Durant just got a lot richer.  Durant signed a seven year, $60 Million Dollar endorsement deal with Nike, with a $10 Million Dollar Bonus.  That's the second highest deal Nike has given to a rookie (LeBron James got $90 Million his rookie season).  However, Durant turned down a better offer from Adidas ($70 Million Dollars and $12 Million bonus), saying he has worn Nike since he was in 8th Grade, and didn't feel comfortable switching.

Michael Vick's first court appearance will be next Thursday, July 26th in Richmond, Virginia at 3:30pm, Virginia time.  He will appear in front of the magistrate judge, followed by an arraignment judge.  He is expected to post bond and wait until his possible trial.  The Falcons first formal practice under new Head Coach Bobby Petrino, is also set for that day, so Vick will not be in attendance that day.  If he indeed bonds out, he should be able to rejoin the team for Friday's practice scheduled at 8:30am.  But, how long will he be able to stay with the team?  The HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) have called on both the Atlanta Falcons and the NFL to suspend Michael Vick indefinitely in regards to the abuse of the dogs sustained on his property by "Bad Newz Kennels".  No word on any disciplinary action by the Falcons or the NFL in regards to Vick and this case, but Vick has formally apologized to Falcons owner Arthur Blank today.

Jerry Yang, a California Psycologist, won the "World Series of Poker", which is the largest No-Limit Texas Hold 'Em Poker Tournament in the world.  Yang, won $8.25 Million Dollars and the bracelet, which is given to the winner of the annual event.  Yang survived 6,358 players who bought a $10,000 chance at winning the seven figure prize, in Las Vegas.  I've always thought it was quite ironic that they call it "Texas Hold 'Em" and it isn't even legal to play here.  I will save my "we need to legalize casino gaming" for another post.  But that does stink.

And finally, Golf's third major event of the season gets underway on Thursday, as the British Open gets underway in Carnoustie, Scotland.  The World's Number One Golfer Tiger Woods will be there, however he is 0-2 in majors this year.  Two first time winners won The Masters (Zach Johnson) and The US Open (Angel Cabrera), so will it be a trifecta in first time winners or will Tiger, Phil, Ernie or another one of the big names get lucky?

It's truly the "Dog Days Of Summer" for Atlanta Falcons Quarterback, Michael Vick.  He was indicted bya Federal Grand Jury today and charged with dogfighting operations in which the losers died in the pit, were electrocuted, drowned, shot, or hanged.  The charges on Vick and three others were Competitive Dogfighting & Procuring and Training of Pit Bulls for fighting and conducting the enterprise across state lines.  The operation was called "Bad Newz Kennels", and the dogs were housed, trained, and fought on Vick's property in Surry County, Virginia.  In a 19 page indictment, filed in a U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of the Commonwealth of Virginia, it alledges that the 27 year old Vick, and his co-defendants began the dogfighting operation in 2001, which was Vick's rookie season with the Falcons.  If convicted, Vick faces a possibility of six years in prison and a $350,000 fine.  Vick is in the third year of a 10 year $130 Million Dollar contract with Atlanta.  Not to mention, they don't have a whole lot of options at backup, as they traded their proven backup QB, Matt Schaub to your Houston Texans.  If Vick does get the six years, it's not enough in my opinion.  I hate any kind of cruelity to animals, even though I don't particularily care for the Pit Bull breed.  They don't deserve to be treated with malice and put to that kind of abuse and torture.

In other NFL News, former Pro Bowl Quarterback, Duante Culpepper got his wish and was finally released by the Miami Dolphins.  Culpepper's exodus from the team was almost certain with the arrival of former Chiefs Quarterback, Trent Green, via a six-player trade.  Culpepper had major surgery to rebuild his right knee, after it was shattered while playing for the Minnesota Vikings during the 2005 season.  Culpepper signed with the Dolphins as a free agent before the 2006 season.  He passed a physical and was cleared to play.  However, he only made four starts with the Dolphins, was sacked 21 times and never played again, because he reinjured the knee.  Supposedly, he's recovered and is now looking for a new job.  Rumors have him headed to Jacksonville, where his former coach Mike Tice is Assistant Head Coach.  He will try to challenge Byron Leftwich and his backup David Garrard for either the starting or backup gig.

The autopsy on Pro-Wrestler Chris Benoit came back and it showed that he did indeed have steroids in his system.  However, he also had a good amount of the anti-anxiety prescription Xanax and the painkiller hydrocodone in his system, not to mention ten times the amount of testosterone in his body.  Both his wife and son also appeared to be sedated at the time of their death as well.  Nancy Benoit, his wife, had Xanax, Hydrocodone, and Hydromorphone (another painkiller) in her system, as well as a blood alcohol level of 0.184, which is twice the legal limit for the State of Georgia.  Daniel Benoit, his son, had Xanax his system, but could not be tested for steroids, because there was not enough urine in his system to test.  Medical examiners have stated the drug use might have had more to do with their deaths than the "roid rage", but they can't rule anything out.

In the case of "they should have seen it coming".  Yi Jianlian, the sixth pick of the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA Draft, said that he will not play for Milwaukee and if the Bucks don't trade him, he will return to his former team in China.  Before the draft, Yi's agent, Dan Fegan made the statement that Yi wanted to play in a big city, with a large Asian population.  However, the Bucks ignored the warning and drafted Yi anyway.  Yi and his agent met with Milwaukee's ownership and management and asked them to trade Yi, not because of the small Asian population in Milwaukee or the lack of commercial endorsements for Yi, in America's Dairyland.  But, Fegan said the Bucks "were not the right fit for Yi's development as an NBA player."  Yeah right.  However, the Chinese National Team coach, Qian Chenghai said that Yi should sign with Milwaukee, because it would hurt and destroy his reputation with the NBA.  Good thing we didn't have this problem with Yao.  We'll see if we can't find out what Yao's opinion is, with Yi's refusal to go to the Bucks.

And, to conclude where we began, with the dogs, in this story, "Every Dog Has His Day", The Good Guys lived up to their name.  The Astros won 4-2 tonight, as they beat former Astros pitcher Tim Redding.  Chris Sampson pitched 6.2 innings, giving up six hits, two earned runs, three strikeouts, and no walks.  Brad Lidge was his old "Lights Out" self tonight, as he earned his first save since September 28 of last year.  Carlos Lee went 2-4 with his 18th Home Run and two RBI.  Hunter Pence knocked his 12th dinger of the year out of the park.  He went 2-5 on the game.  And, even Roy Oswalt came in and pitched to one batter in the seventh.  He said it was going to be six days between starts and he wanted to stay fresh.  Jason Jennings (1-5 4.15 ERA) takes the mound against Jason Bergman (1-5 4.32 ERA) tonight for the third game of this series.  Let's hope they can build on the momentum.

Well, the Astros lost again... what else is new.  This time 4-3 over the last place Washington Nationals.  So, let's find out what else is happening in the Wide, Wide World of other sports.

Bad news for the first place Milwaukee Brewers, ace pitcher Ben Sheets has been placed on the 15-Day Disabled List with a Distal Sprain in his right middle finger, which is his pitching hand.  The Brewers expect to be without Sheets for about two weeks.  Good news is they didn't need him Monday night, as the Brewers hung on to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3.  However, they better not go to sleep, because here comes the Cubbies.  The Surging Northsiders rallied once again to defeat the San Francisco Giants 3-2.  Third Baseman Aramis Ramirez hit a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth to put the Cubs in front for good.  The Cubs moved to five games over .500 and stayed 3.5 games behind the Brewers in second place in the NL Central.  The Cubs also added some veteran leadership as they acquired Catcher Jason Kendall from the Oakland Athletics for C-Rob Bowen and Left-Handed Pitcher Jerry Blevins.  Kendall is in his 12th year in the majors.  He's spent most of his career in Pittsburgh, however has been with Oakland the past few seasons.  He is in the final year of his six-year contract and is due $13.4 Million this season, so the A's were ready to unload him.  Especially since he's only hitting .226 with two home runs and 22 RBI this season.  Kendall is a career .298 hitter with 70 career home runs, 596 RBI, and 162 Stolen Bases.  The Cubs are hoping that coming back to the National League and more familar surroundings will help rejuvenate his career.

Some NFL news.  A couple of monster contracts were signed today.  It was a good day to be a defensive lineman/end.  Indianapolis Colts probowler, Dwight Freeney signed a six year $72 Million Dollar extension with the Colts.  Which includes a $30 million dollar signing bonus.  That made him the highest paid defensive player in NFL history.  That was until the Detroit Lions extended the contract of Defensive Tackle Cory Redding to a seven year $49 Million Dollar deal which also includes $16 million dollars in guaranteed money, $13 Million dollars in signing bonuses and roster guarantees and $20 million over the first three years of his contract.  It was not all good news for defensive players and their respective teams though.  New England's Asante Samuel and Chicago's Lance Briggs failed to reach contract agreement deadlines for franchise designated players, which was 4pm EDT today.  Now by league rules, they can only sign a one-year tender.  Both have said they will hold out until week 10 to sign the one-year qualifying offer tendered to them at the outset of the free agent period.  That's the latest possible point which a player can sign and still get credit for an accrued season toward the NFL Pension Plan.  The one year tender offer for Samuel is $7.79 Million and it's $7.206 Million for Briggs.  The Bears have tried to work out a couple of trades for Briggs, but have had no luck finding the right compensation in return.  The Patriots said they have no intention of trading Samuel.

Bad news for Los Angeles Galaxy fans, and papparazzi worldwide.  David Beckham may be a scratch for Saturday's exhibition game with Chelsea.  He has a swolen ankle that he reinjured in his last game with Real Madrid.  The game is sold out and is scheduled to be televised nationally with 19 cameras  just there to track Beckham.  The weekend series was billed to be "The World Series of Football".  However, with Beckham on the perverbial shelf, it's going to be a big disappointment for the fans and the media.

And UT's Cat Osterman helped the United States Softball team win the World Cup of Softball by beating Japan 3-0.  Osterman struck out 13 batters in the victory.  Too bad she can't sign with the Astros.

I was watching "The Beverly Hillbillies" this morning on a well known Superstation (it wasn't Fox 26 or My 20, so I won't give them a plug on here) on DIRECTV, and I saw a promo for "Soul Train".  I had no idea that they were running old episodes of this popular music program.  And, when I say old, I mean episodes from the 70's.  I'm going to be sure to set my TIVO up to catch these.  I'm so glad to see it.  I grew up watching "Soul Train" and "American Bandstand".  But, I always liked "Soul Train", because R&B/Soul has always been my favorite kind of music.  I quit listening to mainstream R&B and watching "Soul Train" about five years ago, when Rap and Hip Hop took over the format.  However, now I can enjoy "Soul Train" once again with Don Cornelius hosting and a little Mother Father Sister Brother, otherwise known as MFSB singing the "T.S.O.P (The Sound of Philadelphia)", which was the great theme song.  This coming Saturday, Funkadelic and Betty Wright are on, so I'll be hopping on that train "Standing On The Verge" and "Tonight Is The Night".  I can't wait.  How long have they been doing this?  I wished I had known.  I would have recorded and saved all these episodes.  These are collectors items.  I wished VH-1 or VH-1 Classic would bring back AB, too.

Two-Time Nextel Cup Champion Tony Stewart broke an 0-18 losing streak, by winning at Chicagoland Speedway today.  Stewart edged out Matt Kenseth to win his first race of the season and his first win since November 5, 2006.  With the win, Stewart climbs to sixth place in the Nextel Cup Standings, 482 points behind leader Jeff Gordon, who leads Stewart's Gibbs Racing Teammate Denny Hamlin by 330 points.

The Philadelphia Phillies set a dubious record today with their 10,000th loss.  They are the first professional sports franchise to acheive that feat.  The Phillies lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 10-2.  The Phillies began playing as the Philadelphia Quakers in 1883, and they were briefly called the Blue Jays in the 1940's.  The Phillies are 8810-10000 all time.  Next on that list are the Braves with 9681 losses and the Cubs with 9425 losses.

Barry Bonds is mired in a 1-25 slump, since hitting home run 751.  He went 0-5 today and 0-12 in the series this weekend, as their arch rival Los Angeles Dodgers swept the Giants with a 5-3 win today.  The Dodgers have won their last 11 games vs. San Francisco, at the Giants home field, AT&T Park.  The last time the Dodgers did this was in 1976 and 1977, when they won 13 games at Candlestick Park.  Barry Bonds traveling Home Run Rodeo now moves on to Wrigley Field to take on the red hot Chicago Cubs.  Bonds still needs four home runs to tie Henry Aaron and five home runs to go ahead of him for the all-time Home Run record.  On top of Bonds's slump, the Giants fall to 38-51 on the season, 12 games out in the NL West and in last place.

Well, if it's Sunday and there's a golf tournament where Phil Mickelson has a lead, odds are good he won't when the day ends.  Lefty did his usual choke job, as he had a one-shot lead on the 18th hole.  He proceded to bogey the hole, and give Frenchman, Gregory Havret the victory in the Scottish Open.  Let's hope for Phil's sake, he got the bad luck out of his system this Sunday, because next up is the British Open, which starts Thursday, about two hours from Luss, Scotland, at Camoustie.

The WNBA All-Star Game provided lots of scoring, and despite being outscored 32-25 in the fourth quarter, the East held on for a 103-99 victory over the West.  The Detroit Shock's Cheryl Ford was named MVP, as she scored 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Well the Cubs broke out the brooms Sunday and swept the Astros out of Wrigley.  The Astros now move on to the Nation's Capital, and will face the Nationals at RFK, beginning Monday.  Woody Williams will get the start for the Astros.  He's 4-10 with a 5.34 ERA.  Good news is, the Astros will face Mike Bacsik, who's 2-6 with a 5.20 ERA.  Not to mention, the Nats are in last place in the NL East, so hopefully the Astros can get it rolling against a team that is just as bad as them.  Hey, two teams whose approval ratings are just as low as the President's.

Well, I wasn't sure if blogging on Friday the 13th was bad luck, I didn't want to risk it, so I played hooky.  Actually, I was at LAX to greet Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham... oh, her husband, too.  Then I woke up.  Anyway, on to the sports of the day...

"Bad Boys, Bad Boys, whatcha gonna do..."  Yes, more bad behavior punishment for some fellow athletes.  The Sacramento Kings, Ron Artest and The Golden State Warriors,  Stephen Jackson, whom I'm sure have their own cushy cell at the county lockup, by this point, were both handed down suspensions today by the NBA League Office.  And, before you ask, yes I think this is kind of a weird time of year to dish these out, but they didn't ask me.  Both players were given the first seven games off, without pay.  Artest was suspended for a Domestic Violence arrest back in March, in which he was orded to serve 100 Hours of Community Service, and serve in a work project for the Placer County Sherriff's Department.  Jackson was arrested for carelessly firing a handgun outside of an Indiana strip club.  He was later fined $5,000 and sentenced to 100 Hours of Community Service as well.  Because of these suspensions, Artest will lose approximately $471,000 and Jackson will lose about $50,000... a drop in the well.

An NFL pro-bowler is also in trouble with the law.  Miami Dolphins Wide Out, Chris Chambers was arrested early this morning around 2:30am in Charlotte, North Carolina for Speeding and Driving Under the Influence.  The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police released Chambers on a $1750 Bond.  The Dolphins declined comment, until they have had a chance to speak to Chambers.

New York Mets Pitcher Tom Glavine notched his 298th win last night against the Cincinnati Reds.  And, he pitched like he did when he won a World Series MVP, 12 years ago.  Glavine pitched eight innings, gave up one earned-run, only gave up two hits, struck out five and walked none in the Mets 2-1 victory over the futile Red Machine.  Former Astro Billy Wagner pitched a scoreless ninth, for his 19th save.

The 2007 Tennis Hall-Of-Fame Class was announced today.  It is no surprise that Pete Samparas tops the list.  Quite possibly the greatest player in Men's Tennis History, Samparas won 14 Grand Slam Titles... seven Wimbledon, five US Open, and two Australian Open.  He was the Number One Player in the World for a record 286 Weeks, 102 Straight Weeks from April 15, 1996 to March 30, 1998.  Samparas will be joined in the Hall by Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario.   Over her 18 year career, she led Spain to five Fed Cup Winning Teams.  She had 14 Grand Slam Titles... four singles, six doubles, and four mixed-double titles.  She was the first Spanish Woman to win the US Open in 1994 and she won three French Open Titles.  Sven Davidson also was elected.  The 79 year old was the first Swede to win the French Open in 1957, after being defeated in the Finals in '55 and '56.  And, rounding out the class will be Photographer, Russ Adams, who has spent over 50 years photographing Tennis.  Adams is 77 and is still taking pictures, just not full time anymore.

In the "Who Cares" category, Gary Sheffield is still harping on the fact that he claims New York Yankees skipper Joe Torre does not treat his African-American players the same way he treats the others.  Earth-To-Gary, You play in Detroit now, who cares about that ancient history!  If Torre were a racist, would have we not heard about this sooner?  You weren't the first African-American to play with or for Torre.  Don't you think it could possibly have something to do with your negative attitude.  You've only displayed it everywhere you've played... Milwaukee, Florida, San Diego, Los Angeles, Atlanta, New York... give us all a break.  You are a talented player.  What is the purpose of drumming up this stuff with the Yankees, since it's ancient history.  The Yankees are knocking on the door of .500.  Your Tigers are in first place.  The season ends today, your team's in the playoffs.  Joe's team is watching the playoffs.  Just let it go already.  And, you guys in the media covering it, don't you have something better to cover?  Oh wait, you Yankee writers don't, do you?!  Sheff, keep your mouth shut and do whatever you can to help the Tigers get to that next level.  That would be WINNING the World Series for all of you playing along at home.

And speaking of teams that will probably be watching the playoffs, your "Good for nothin' Guys", those Houston Astros once again got embarrassed by the Chicago Cubs at the very unfriendly confines of Wrigley Field today at the tune of 9-3.  Three crooked numbers in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings did Roy-O in.  His line on the game... 5 1/3 innings pitched, gave up 10 hits, nine runs (eight were earned), two walks, and six strikeouts.  Alfonzo Soriano and Aramis Ramirez doing the bulk of the damage for the Cubbies.  Soriano was 2-5 with 3 RBI's including a monster home run (his 16th on the season).  Ramirez was 3-4 with 4 RBI.  Ted Lily the recipient of all the run support.  He pitched eight strong innings, giving up four hits, one earned run, seven strikeouts and one walk.  The lone bright spot for the Astros was Morgan Ensberg.  Mo' was 3-4 on the day.  His average crept up to a paltry .221.  But, he came with it today, maybe he's finally turning the corner.  Well, hopefully Sunday the Astros will put the All-Star Break behind them.  Wandy Rodriguez (6-7 3.87 ERA) will square off with Jason Marquis (6-5 3.67 ERA)... comparable stats, something's gotta give.

As I discussed in a previous blog, Yankees Third Baseman, Alex Rodriguez's agent, Scott Boras, stated that he expected A-Rod to opt out of his contract and would be worth $30 Million per season on the Free Agent Market this fall.

I've been a huge baseball fan all my life.  I remember when I lived in Connecticut and my Dad would bring me back all sorts of Mets toys from Shea Stadium.  That's why I'm a Mets fan today.  But, I am actually thinking about boycotting baseball all together, if A-Rod does get $30 Million.  I've actually been thinking about this, since he signed his last deal.  Where does it end?!  Soon we'll be having players signing for $100 Million a season.  The costs of these enormous, inflated contracts are being passed on to you and me.  When my family moved to Northeast Texas, I remember going to watch some Rangers games at old Arlington Stadium.  The other day, I was looking through some of my old autographs from those days.  I came across a ticket stub autographed by Julio Franco, when he was playing for the Cleveland Indians in 1987 (it's amazing he's still playing, however he just got cut today by my Mets).  The price of that ticket for a Field Box seat was $7.50.  A couple of weeks ago, my Dad bought tickets for him and me to watch the Rangers and Royals play Labor Day weekend at The Ballpark in Arlington, and these are Field Box seats.  These tickets cost $48.00 a piece.  If you take a family of four or five to the ballpark these days, it can run you in excess of $300 just for one game.  You factor in tickets, parking, concessions, souvenirs... it's just outrageous.  This is America's Pastime.  It should be affordable to go to the ballpark to see your favorite team play, but it's not.  It's flat out ridiculous to pay these prices to see a baseball game.  And, it is due to these never ending escalating salaries.

And, we have it relatively "cheap" here in Houston.  At Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park (where the Boston Red Sox Play), it costs in excess of $150 for Box Seats.  The thing that marvels me, is they sell out.  You factor in that some of these are season ticket holders.  Figure in 81 games at that rate (of course you get a 'small' discount), and you've bought yourself a car for what you're paying for ONE season of these tickets.  Not to mention, most people who have season tickets, have more than one seat.  How can most people afford that?!  I don't mind paying in excess of $100 a game for football, because you essentially have eight home games and it's A LOT more exciting.  It's an all day experience.  However, when you're spending the same amount for baseball games, there's a big problem.  I like going to the Astros games as much as the next person, but I hate looking at my wallet when I get through, because sometimes you realize you've spent a car note on a 2-0 game.

The only way to stop the insanity of these costs being absorbed by you and I, the casual fan, is to stay away from the ballpark.  I'm not saying an all-out boycott, I'm just talking about not going to the ballpark and paying these outrageous prices.  There has got to be a way to show the owners and players, that they have got to institute a permanent salary cap and that we the fans, are tired of paying for these huge contracts and not getting our money's worth out of it.  I remember when Nolan Ryan was the first $1,000,000 man, and he was worth it.  How is it, that the price tag has gone from one mil to 30 mil, in just 26 years?  How is it that the price for a box seat has gone from $7.50 to $48 in just 20 years... that almost a 700% increase!  You and I are paying for these enormous contracts and it's not fair.  Not to mention, I won't even get into the fact the teachers, police officers, fire fighters, and our men and women fighting overseas are making less than $40,000 a year.  It's absolutely disgusting to see these athletes, who I can't get enough of, making $30 mil per.

Major League Baseball is the only major sport that does not have a salary cap.  They have a team limit for spending, and if that team goes over, they have pay a luxury tax.  But, the teams don't seem to care.  The New York Yankees have paid that Luxury Tax for six years now, like it was you and I paying a water bill.  The Players Union is so corrupt though, they don't see it.  They are all so rich, that they can't see passed their own bank accounts to see that there is a problem with us fans absorbing most of the costs of these big dollar free agents.  Not to mention, attendance at the ballparks is steady.  Some teams are drawing in excess of 3,000,000 fans per season.  The Yankees drew over 4,000,000 last year.  The average Yankee ticket is $75.  If you add that up, the Yankees made over 300 million at the gate.  That's only on tickets.

Sadly, the only way this situation is going to get better is if people refuse to go to the ball game.  And, like any grass roots effort, it's got to start with someone.  So, I am going to going to say right now, that if A-Rod does get $30 million a year from someone, I won't be attending anymore MLB games, until they do something about their salary escalation, and passing it on to the fans.  It's not right.  You should be able to afford to go to the ballpark.  It should not be a financial hardship.  I'm sure I will be in the minority and it will be difficult.  As I said, I love to go to the games, but I also like having money to do other things.  I hope more and more fans will take this approach as well.  We need to send Major League Baseball a message.  It's just not right.

I do know this, if I ever have a son, he may hate me, but he will be playing sports.  I don't care if he hates it or not, or if he hates me for making him do it.  I tell him, "you may hate me now, but you'll love me, when you're driving your tricked out Ferrari home from the game to your River Oaks (or wherever he may be living) mansion, with your supermodel wife and your countless endorsements. "  Not to mention, dear ol' Dad will be happy in his Hill Country house or my house overlooking the Puget Sound.

Thank Goodness for the All-Star Break, because the heat and humidity of this Houston Summer has had me down and out the last couple of days, but here's what's happening.

The New York Yankees were hoping to renegotiate a deal with All-Star Third Baseman, Alex Rodriguez to get a contract extension done, preventing him from opting out of his contract and becoming a Free Agent at the end of the season.  However, A-Rod's agent Scott Boras, said, "Not so fast." He said there will be no talks until after the season.  He also said he expects A-Rod to get at least $30 MILLION PER SEASON.  No, that's not a typo.  I did say ONE YEAR at the rate of $30 MILLION per.  Disgusting Isn't It?!  A-Rod is currently signed through 2010, but can opt out after this year, due to clause in his contract.  On his current deal, he is set to make $32 million  the last two years of his deal and the Texas Rangers are still paying 1/3 of the $81 Million left on A-Rod's current deal.   He can also choose to stay and opt out of that deal in 2009 or 2010.  The Yankees are having a terrible season so far, in third place a game under .500.  However, it's not A-Rod's fault for a change.  He's hitting .317 with 30 Home Runs and 86 RBI's at the break.

He's not the only one set to break the bank.  All-Star MVP Ichiro Suzuki is on the verge of signing a five year, $100 Million Dollar extension to stay with the Seattle Mariners.  It's really a shame that Ichiro didn't start his career over here.  I think he could have really challenged Pete Rose's record of 4,256 hits.  As you saw Tuesday night, he's definitely one of the most exciting players in the Majors and the only reason you don't hear more about him, is because he plays in the Pacific Northwest.  He was the first player in MLB history to hit an Inside-The-Park Home Run in an All-Star Game.

The Orlando Magic definitely must be considered as a big challenger in the Eastern Conference, well so would the Florida Gators, if they played professionally.  But, they are definitely the big news makers of the off-season.  On Wednesday, they signed the core of their team.  Houstonian Rashard Lewis completed his deal, which was a sign and trade with the Seattle Supersonics, who signed him to a six year $110 Million Dollar deal then shipped him to Orlando for a second round draft pick and a trade exception worth $9 Million Dollars.  Then, the Magic signed their big man, Center Dwight Howard to a five year $85 Million Dollar extension.  So, the Magic have a nice 1,2 punch for years to come.  So, maybe the Magic fans, who bought all those season tickets after Billy Donovan told them he'd be their next head coach, and then changed his mind, will get their money's worth after all.

It's not as rosey in the Rose City of Portland though, #1 pick Greg Oden will have his summer cut short, because he needs to have his tonsils removed.  Oden was playing in the NBA Summer Leagues and set to play with a US Senior team before the Blazers season began, but all of that has been scrapped because of the tonsilectomy.  Oden says, "he's worn out" after playing in the National Championship and the whirlwind circus following the anticipation of him being one of the top picks in the NBA Draft.  So, while he hates this has happened, he welcomes the rest.

U.S. Fans of Formula One racing will have to hop the pond, if they want to see it up close and personal.  F1 Officials could not come to an agreement to keep their lone American race in Indianapolis.  They tried to work out a deal to possibly move it to New York or Las Vegas, but could not hammer out an agreement. It's quite ironic, because this race drew the largest amount of fans in Formula One racing, averaging between 125,000-200,000 people at The Brickyard each season.  It was also the third big race at that track, when you factor in the Indy 500 and NASCAR's Brickyard 400.  To take its place, they are trying to sign MotoGP, which is the International Motorcycle Races.  We'll see if that will satisfy the race fans appetites.  In case you over looked some details, this has no effect on the Indy 500, which will continue to run at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Memorial Day Weekend.  This is a different racing category all together.

Well these days in Norman, Oklahoma it's more like Bummer Sooner, than Boomer Sooner.  The University of Oklahoma must vacate all of its wins from the 2005 season, and will lose two scholarships in the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 seasons as punishment from the NCAA for rules violations.  The NCAA stated that OU "failed to monitor" its players.  During the 2005 season, starting QB Rhett Bomar and OL-J.D. Quinn were paid for work at a Norman Car Dealership.  That is an NCAA rules violation.  Both players are no longer with the team.  As a matter of fact, Bomar is now the QB at Sam Houston State in Huntsville.  The Sooners were 8-4, with a Holiday Bowl win over Oregon in 2005.  The Sooners are appealing to the NCAA.  If the probation stands it will run through May 23, 2010.  They also better hope that they don't get any more NCAA penalties during that time.  It could mean the 'death penalty', like it did for SMU back in the mid 80's.  That program has never recovered.  It would be a shame to see one of the nation's premier programs reduced to such a level.  I know you Longhorn fans are happy now about that, but that's a special rivalry (The Red River Classic), you wouldn't want it to go away.  Trust me, as a Pittsburgh Steeler fan, no one was more upset about the Browns leaving Cleveland and happier about the Browns returning to Cleveland, outside of Cleveland, than Steeler fans were.  So, your happiness of OU's possible downfall will soon turn to sadness if that rivalry disappears.

The All-Star Break continues tonight for the Astros, but they better get a good night sleep, because it's time for those afternoon games at Wrigley Field.  The 'Stros start the 2nd half with a trip to the Northside of Chicago.  And, like Mr. Calkins does, I will recommend a trip to Gene & Georgetti's, a deep-dish at Gino's East, or an Italian Beef Sandwich and a Root Beer at the Bergdoff for your dining pleasure.  The Astros will play tomorrow at 1:20pm and they get tested right away by Astro killer Carlos Zambrano.  All I ask is don't let him hit a home run.  He's a pitcher for crying out loud.  Everytime he faces us, it's like watching Albert Pujols in a Cubs uniform.  Jason Jennings will oppose him.  Jennings was 1-4 with a 4.07 ERA in the first half and mired by some injuries.  Hopefully, he'll bring it in the second half.  The Astros go into the second half of the season with a lackluster 39-50 record, in fifth place, 10.5 games behind Milwaukee in the NL Central and 10 games behind the Dodgers for the Wild Card spot (that one ain't happening).  The Cubs, on the other hand, have been on a surge.  They are 44-43, in second place in the NL Central, and now only 4.5 games behind the Brew Crew.  They are four games back in the Wild Card trailing the Dodgers, Braves, and Diamondbacks.  So, do the Astros have it in them to put on another heroic charge.  I don't see it, but I didn't see the last few either.  It all begins Friday!

Well now that Beltran is gone for another year, it's time to move on to other stories.

If you missed the classic match at Wimbledon on Sunday, you truly missed a gem.  I must say, I've never been much into watching Men's Tennis, but I must say I can't stop watching a Federer/Nadal match.  You just never know how it's going to turn out.  I thought for sure, Nadal would finally deliver the knockout punch to Federer on a surface that wasn't clay.  However, the master schooled the pupil once again.  Roger Federer won his fifth straight Wimbledon trophy as he beat Nadal in five back and forth sets.  It was quite a battle.  Federer won his 5th straight Wimbledon title (tying Bjorn Borg's record) and he won his 11th Grand Slam title, which is third on the all time list.  Borg and Rod Laver both have 11.  Roy Emerson has 12 and Pete Samparas leads them all with 14.  Federer, who's 25 beat the 21 year old Nadal, to improve his record to 8-5 all time vs. Nadal.  The next Grand Slam event will be the US Open the last week in August.

Vladimir Guerrero, of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, defeated Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Alex Rios to win the Home Run Derby held tonight at AT&T Park in San Francisco, as a part of the All Star Events leading up to tomorrow night's game.  It was thought that a Left-Handed Batter would have more of an advantage, given the shorter porch and "McCovey Cove" in right field.  However, two righties battled and Vlad, the Impaler, came out on top.  The All-Star Game is Tuesday night here on FOX 26, with pregame festitivities beginning at 6:30pm.  Athletics pitcher Dan Haren and Padres pitcher Jake Peavy have been named starting pitchers for the event.  And, the stupid rule is still in effect that the winning league will get home field advantage in the World Series. So, let's go National League, who's been winless in the last ten All Star Games.

Miami Heat Forward Antoine Walker was robbed at gunpoint in his Chicago home.  Although, he was not hurt, thank goodness, a vehicle, cash, and jewelry were all taken from his home.  It took place approximately 6:30pm Chicago time on Monday Night.  The Chicago Police are still looking for the suspect and investigating.  Walker's agent Mark Bartelstein reported the incident on Walker's behalf.  Walker is a Chicago Native, who was an All-American at Mount Carmel High School.  He helped Kentucky win a National Championship in 1996.  He spent the bulk of his career with the Boston Celtics, but has been with the Miami Heat the past few years and helped the Heat win a NBA title in 2006.

Speaking of the NBA, Golden State Warriors Head Coach Don Nelson wants a raise.  The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that Nelson met with ownership to discuss making his playoff bonus incentives a part of his contract, which would raise his $3.1 Million Dollar Salary to appx. $6 million a year.  His current salary is one of the lowest in the league.  Nelson is still trying to decide whether to coach at all next season.  He still has two years remaining on his current deal, but the 67 year old, claimed last season took its toll and he said he never worked harder than he did last season.  It certainly paid off, as Golden State had a remarkable turn around from being one of the worst teams in the league to becoming the 8th seed in the playoffs and then knocking off the #1 Seeded Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the NBA playoffs.  More Warrior news, there is a rumor that Kevin Garnett might be headed there.  The Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State are in discussions that involve Garnett going to Golden State for Brendan Wright, who the Warriors acquired from Charlotte on draft day.  Wright and a few other contracts that the Warriors wish to move, would be involved in the deal.  However, earlier this evening, Garnett expressed a desire to remain with Minnesota.  So, another twist in the on-going soap opera.

Dan Patrick is leaving ESPN.  The former SportsCenter anchor turned ESPN Radio host is bolting the network after 18 years of service.  Patrick began anchoring SportsCenter in 1989 and when ESPN Radio went on the air, he began hosting an afternoon show from 12pm-3pm Houston time.  The show is currently airing on KFNC 97.5 FM.  However, Patrick's last show will be August 17th.  Rumors have him possibly taking over for Bob Barker on The Price Is Right or taking over for Don Imus on WFAN in New York, being syndicated by Westwood One to do a radio show and working for CBS Sports.  I'm sure we'll find out after his last program at ESPN.

And one month from tomorrow will be the first exhibition game for your Houston Texans.  They will play the defending NFC Champion Chicago Bears at Reliant Stadium at 7pm.  In other Texans news  former Texas A&M star Bethel Johnson signed a one-year deal with the Texans.  The second round pick by the New England Patriots in 2003, Johnson suffered through injury issues the last few seasons.  He was dealt to New Orleans, but was cut and signed by Minnesota, but that didn't last.  He tried to catch on with Philadelphia, but flunked a physical.  Hopefully, playing here at home in Houston, will be just what the Doctor ordered.

If you've seen the show "My Name Is Earl", you've heard of the word 'Karma', or for that matter The Beatles hit "Instant Karma", in the late 60's.  Karma is like credit for the soul.  You want to build up good karma, because when you not looking, that bad karma can bite you in the backside.  Flashback to last night's Astros/Mets game.  After hearing the constant booing for the past three seasons, Carlos Beltran had the last laugh, so to speak.  With the game tied at 3 runs a piece in the 14th Inning, and a runner in scoring position, Luke Scott hit a monster shot into deep center field.  It probably would have been a problem for anyone who hadn't spent a great deal of time working on shots on to "Tal's Hill".  However, Carlos Beltran sized it up and although he stumbled, he still hung on to the ball for the third out of the inning.  But, he wasn't through trying to put egg on the faces of all the fans, who have rained boos down upon him at the plate and cheers when he makes an out (by the way, that's really classy).  In the 17th, he would provide the RBI Single that put the Mets on top for good.  Oh, and to top the bad karma night off, the All-Time Leader in Saves for the Astros, Billy Wagner came in to save the game for the Mets.  I know I said this in my previous post, but it's been three years already, let it go.  Have you really missed him that much?  If Beltran were an Astro now, would Hunter Pence be with this team?  If you compare stats, Pence's might be a little better than Beltran's.  His average is certainly higher.  You've been to a World Series, as a matter of fact, you went the year Beltran spurned you to go to the Mets.  Beltran was at home watching the World Series and the rest of the Astros were there.  No one has ever mentioned this fact, here in Houston that I know of, but Beltran is Puerto Rican, and New York City has the highest Puerto Rican population outside of being in Puerto Rico, than anywhere else in the country.  As a matter of fact, Puerto Ricans in New York make up the largest contingent of the Hispanic Community there.  I realize, not counting the State Income Tax figured in, that New York gave him a better contract, and it looks like he left because of that, but what if he just wanted to play in front of the people he felt most comfortable playing in front of... Puerto Rican transplants, just like him.  It really doesn't matter, because for one reason or another, he chose the Mets and for that he's public enemy #1 and still worthy of the non-stop booing fest that goes on whenever he makes a play or swings a bat?!  Gimme a break!  This guy is a stand-up family man, very religious, does a lot for kids in Puerto Rico and in Queens, where the Mets play.  He's quiet.  He doesn't run his mouth.  He doesn't slam down the bat, when the calls don't go his way.  He doesn't curse out the umpires.  He's not scratching himself or spitting all time.  He's not getting into any incidents off the field.  He chose the Mets THREE YEARS AGO, and here we are still stuck in 2005 and can't seem to get over the bitterness.  Think of it this way, if you would have signed Beltran to that monster contract, would there have been enough money to sign Roger Clemens last year?  I don't think so.  Or, how about signing Carlos Lee this year?  I don't think so either.  When Beltran signed his contract, he didn't say "Take this Astros fans" and signed his name.  So once again, I implore you to restore your good karma and let the Beltran thing go all ready.  Let the past, be the past.  The Astros have not been any worse for the wear, without him.  If you continue to act with malice and ill feelings toward him, things like last night's catch and RBI single could replay all over again.

In a related subject, I know it looks nice, but sooner or later someone is going to break a leg or ankle.  It's time to get rid of "Tal's Hill".  There is a reason that the baseball diamond is flat.  There is a reason a basketball court, a hockey ice rink, a football field, tennis court, and so on, is flat.  It's because your concentration should be on the ball and not on the surface.  "Tal's Hill" requires you to do both and if you're not paying atttention, it can cause serious injury.  I can understand how it's nice and unique (well Crosley Field in Cincinnati had one and a few other did, too back in the day).  But the safety of the players is most important.  I'm not only saying this because Beltran could have gotten hurt last night, but Willie T could have last year.  Burke, Hunter, Biggio and everyone else who have patrolled Center Field, in this park, could have gotten hurt, too.  If you want to pay tribute to Tal Smith, name a hoagie after him at the concession stand or something.  I'd rather have my name on a sandwich instead of a dirt hill anyway.  But, seriously "Tal's Hill" needs to go for the safety of all Center Fielders at Minute Maid.

Well, 7-7-7, proved to be lucky for Venus Williams, as the 27 year old, notched her fourth plate trophy at Wimbledon as she defeated Marion Bartoli to capture her sixth Grand Slam title, in 12 Grand Slam Finals Matches.  Venus only trails Martina Navratilova (who won 9 titles), Steffi Graf (who won 7 titles) and Billy Jean King (who won 6 tiles) for the most Wimbledon titles.  Venus also became the highest seed (ranked 31st at the start of Wimbledon) to ever win the Women's Title.

Stop me if you've heard this one before, but Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will face each other again in a Grand Slam Final.  They will play for the Men's Championship at Wimbledon tomorrow.  It seems like every Men's Championship match lately has come down to these two.  Nadal is coming off winning the French Open title against Federer, but that was on Clay and that's the only surface that Nadal is superior to Federer.  Every other Grand Slam title that has paired these two, have wound up with Federer going home with the trophy.  We'll see what happens tomorrow.

It's official, Chauncey Billups, has re-upped with the Detroit Pistons for another five years, and $60 Million according to the Detroit Free Press.  The fifth year is a team option.  Many speculated this the other day, however Billups agent called it a "Vicious Rumor".  Many had Billups exiting Motown due to a sour relationship with Coach Flip Saunders, but Billups career has taken off with the Pistons and he wants to finish his career there.

Welcome to the NBA Kevin Durant and Greg Oden.  Both struggled somewhat in their initiation in Summer League Play, as Kevin Durant missed 12 of 17 shots, and scored 18 points in his first game.  Greg Oden was called for 10 fouls in his first action.  So, I guess now that the initiation period is over, they know what to expect... and it ain't going to be easy.

In Paris France, in front of a bunch of Desperate Housewives, and a few World Champion San Antonio Spurs, Tony Parker and Eva Longoria exchanged vows at Saint Germain l'Auxerrois Church.  The two were technically married yesterday by the former Mayor of Paris, but did the couple said, "Oui" and "Oui" today in front of friends and loved ones.  The two have expressed their intentions on starting a family right away.

After scoring 32 runs in two games on Friday, the Minnesota Twins bats were silent by Mark "Send Them Home Early" Buehrle, as the Chi-Sox beat the Twins 3-1.  Buehrle improved his trade stock, by improving his record to 6-4 with a 3.03 ERA.  As the MLB trade deadline looms, his name has been mentioned the most, with the White Sox floundering in a tough AL Central Race.  The White Sox have told the Chicago Sun Times, however, that Buehrle is not on the trade market.  We'll see.  Sometimes that is the kiss of death.

And leave it to Wandy Rodriguez to save his best game of his career until they face my New York Mets.  The Astros Lefty pitched a complete game shut out last night, as your "Good Guys" won 4-0.  The Mets didn't exactly play the cleanest ball game either, but Wandy pitched a pretty good one and some clutch plays by Brad Ausmus of all people, gave the Astros the break they needed.  In tonights action, Mets Pitcher Tom Glavine is going for win 298 of his career and in the sixth, he's trailing 3-2 and being outdueled by Woody "I can't win for losing" Williams of all people.  I guess I'm the one that can't win for losing.  Anyway, "Let's Go Mets!"

I realize when you mention the name Michael Moore, in the heart of Bush Country, you don't always get a good reception.  But, I urge everyone regardless of party affiliation, conservative, liberal, moderate... wherever your views lie, to go see "SICKO".  It may be a little difficult to find.  I only saw it showing at a handful of theatres.  I saw it today at the AMC 24 Willowbrook (NW Houston).  It is an incredibly moving film.  I'm not afraid to say I was moved to tears more than once.  But, it really exposes the healthcare crisis in this country, and whether you are for a National Government Controlled Healthcare System or Continued Privatized System, there is a big problem in this country when people that are truly sick and can't afford Healthcare, can't get the treatment and end up dying, especially little children.  Like I said, I approached it from a Non-Partisan Standpoint and I urge everyone to watch it.  And, even if you don't want to go to the theatre and watch it, rent it or watch it when it comes out on DVD/PPV/Movie Channels.  I guarantee if you approach it the same way I did, you will not be disappointed.

I also saw "TRANSFORMERS" last night, which was great if you love a lot of action... and I mean A LOT of action!

Well first Shocking Blue said it in the 70's, and then Bananarama covered it in the 80's, but anyone way you prefer it... "She's Got It, Yeah, Baby She's Got It"... I'm talking about 'Venus'!  Venus Williams defeats first #2 seeded Maria Sharapova and then #5 seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova to move into the semifinals at Wimbledon.  She will now face Ana Ivanovic on Friday.

Grant Hill's injury plagued career is moving to the western conference.  The Phoenix Suns and Hill agreed on a Two-Year deal worth up to $3.8 million dollars.  Hill played parts of six seasons with the Orlando Magic.  He signed 6 year $93 Million Dollar with the Magic and only played 200 of the 493 regular season games that took place during the span of that contract.  He only played more than 30 games twice during the six years there.  He is expected to challenge Boris Diaw for the starting Small Forward position.  Hill also considered his first team Detroit, as well as Chicago and San Antonio, but chose Phoenix, because he gave him the opportunity for the most playing time, in addition to an opportunity to win a championship.  Hill will be 37, when the new basketball season begins.

Kobe Bryant really needs a reality show.  The guy can really create his own drama.  Once again, he has softened his stance on wanting to be traded from the Lakers.  While he didn't totally rescind his demand to be traded.  He did apologize to Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak, for all of the negative comments he has made saying that it wasn't very professional of him, and he was just frustrated.  Well Kobe, I'm sure the Laker fans are frustrated, too. But also frustrated, because of your actions, too.  Kobe Bryant made the statement from his Youth Summer Basketball camp in which 450 kids ranging from 8 to 18 are attending.

One of the greatest Goal Tenders of all time, has re-upped for one more season with the Detroit Red Wings.  42 year old Dominik Hasek, resigns for one year, $2 million dollars, with a $2 million dollar bonus.  Hasek is a six time Vezina Trophy winner, given to the best goalie in the NHL and two-time MVP.  Jeremy Roenick on the other hand, has decided to call it a career after 18 years on the ice.  Roenick played with the Chicago Blackhawks, Los Angeles Kings, Philadelphia Flyers, and Phoenix Coyotes.  He is third on the all-time list of goals by an American born player (Roenick is from Boston) with 495 only trailing Mike Modano at 507 and Joey Mullen at 502.

P.J. Carlisimo is indeed the new head coach of the Seattle Super Sonics.  He was introduced at a news conference yesterday in Seattle.

Perennial Sixth Man of the Year, Jerry Stackhouse decides to stay with the Dallas Mavericks for three years and $21.5 Million Dollars.  I mentioned the other day, the Rockets should go after him, but the former North Carolina Tar Heel Star decided to stick with the Mavs, who won 67 games last season and were shown the door in the first round of the NBA playoffs last year, by Golden State Warriors.  As a Spurs fan, I can't say that enough.

Barry Bonds and Ken Griffey, Jr. have both said no to the Home Run Derby to take place on Monday in San Francisco, as a part of the All-Star Game festivities.  Both of them citing age and wear & tear.  They said they just don't have the energy or stamina to do it and be productive players for their teams going into the 2nd half.

And Hideki Okajima, a relief pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, and San Diego Padres starter Chris Young are the last two All-Star Game pitchers, as voted by the fans.  But, Roy Oswalt fans, don't fear, because he has been named to the All-Star Team as well.  He will take Atlanta Braves Pitcher John Smoltz's place, because Smoltz is on the DL.

And sorry Astros fans, this is the one series a year that I will be pulling for another team.  As I have said before, The New York Mets are my favorite team.  They have been since I can remember.  So, I was very happy with the 6-2 win at the Juice Box last night, especially since they got swept in Colorado.  I don't like rooting against the 'Stros, but I'm a Mets fan first and foremost.  I've decided not to attend the games this year, as I'm tired of fighting with Astros fans regarding Carlos Beltran decision to bolt the Astros for New York.  I shouldn't have to take the blame for it.  I wasn't there when he signed the contract and he didn't ask for my opinion on it (I would have said, "Go To The Mets" anyway, but that's here nor there).  It's been three years all ready... let it go.  Quit booing, it makes you sound like spoiled sports.  It's part of the game we all have to live with.  Free agency is the ugly side of sports these days.  The last couple of years, I've had to hear it from Astros fans about Beltran and I'm tired of it.  And, I didn't get to watch the game last night, but I did see Beltran homered, so I would have heard the boo birds come out.   So, I'll be watching from the house, and come Monday, I'll be cheering for the Astros again, but until then, "Let's Go Mets!"

San Francisco Giants Outfielder Barry Bonds is now four home runs shy of tying Henry Aaron's Home Run mark of 755, as hit hit 751 against the Cincinnati Reds last night.  However, it didn't help the Giants, as the Reds beat Bonds' Boys 7-3.  Bonds will start in Left Field, in front of his home crowd at AT&T Park in San Francisco for Tuesday's All-Star Game.

At Wimbledon, Rafael Nadal defeated Robin Soderling.  It took five sets, in five days, but Nadal moves on to the Quarterfinals, where he will face Mikhail Youzhny.  American Andy Roddick also advances to the Quarterfinals, as he defeated Paul-Henri Mathieu in three straight sets.  He will face either Richard Gasquet or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

The San Antonio Express News is reporting that Spurs Assistant Head Coach P.J. Carlisimo will be the next coach of the Seattle Super Sonics.  Carlisimo has been the Assistant Head Coach for the Spurs for the past five seasons.  In that time, the Spurs have won three championships.  No doubt his hiring came because Sonics owner Clay Bennett was on the Spurs Board of Directors from 1990 until his purchase of the Sonics.  Also, GM Sam Presti was the Assistant GM of the Spurs.  Bennett has also said he wants to model in the Sonics after the Spurs.  Everybody wants to be the champs, and if you can't be one, you might as well act like one.  Carlisimo was once the Head Coach of the Golden State Warriors and Portland Trail Blazers.  You may remember back in 1997, he was choked by his player, Latrell Spreewell.  The Warriors would cut Spreewell after the incident, and PJ would coach there until 1999, when he was fired after a 6-21 start.  He would lead the Trail Blazers to three straight playoff seasons.  Carlisimo is 58 and beat out former Minnesota coach Dwane Casey for the job.  Another former Spurs Coach, Bob Hill was fired by the Sonics on April 21st after going 31-51 last season.

The Associated Press and various Detroit Media Outlets are falsely reporting that "Mr. Big Shot", Pistons Guard Chauncey Billups has agreed to a five year contract worth appx. $60 Million Dollars.  Billups agent has said those reports are absolutely false and no contract has been agreed on yet.  Billups has a great relationship with President/GM Joe Dumars, and his teammates.  However, he has many issues with Coach Flip Saunders which is why he decided to go the free agency route.  NBA players are allowed to negotiate with teams, but cannot sign contracts until next Wednesday (the 11th).  The Pistons are the only team that can offer Billups a maximum 6-year deal with maximum money under the free agency rules for the NBA.

If you were thinking about drafting Oakland Raiders running back Dominic Rhodes in your fantasy football draft, you may want to reconsider.  The NFL has suspended Rhodes for the first four games of the season for violating the league's substance abuse policy.  Rhodes signed with the Raiders as a free agent this off season, after helping the Indianapolis Colts win a Super Bowl last season.  He spent six seasons with Indianapolis, mostly as Edgerrin James backup.  Rhodes is frequently in trouble with the law.  He's had numerous speeding violations.  He's been cited for domestic abuse and drinking & driving.  Rhodes will now forfeit $352,941 of the $1.5 million dollar salary he will receive this season.

Former Astros Pitcher Randy Johnson is taking his third tour on the 15-Day Disabled List this season.  This time for a bad back that just is not healing.  Johnson, who's 43, is 4-3 with a 3.81 ERA this year, with 72 Strikeouts and 13 Walks.  This is his second tour of duty with the Diamondbacks, who he helped win a World Series with in 2001.  Johnson believes this isn't a career ending injury, but also said bad backs are a chronic injury that really doesn't go away too fast.  It is up in the air as to when "The Big Unit" will pitch again.

And, I don't know about you, but I can get used to the Astros winning in walk off fashion.  Last night, they hit their third walk off home run in this home stand.  Carlos Lee did it on Biggio's big night, with a Grand Slam.  The next night, Luke Scott made it a two-for.  And, last night, Hunter Pence got in on the action, and made it a hat trick.  I was really hoping he'd get some all star consideration.  Maybe if someone can't go, or doesn't want to go, NL All-Star Manager Tony LaRussa will consider Pence to fill that role.  He's definitely the Rookie Of The Year, so far in the NL.

Well the Rockets dream of having Hometown Forward Rashard Lewis is over.  The former Super Sonics star has agreed to terms with the Orlando Magic.  The contract is reported to be five years between $75-$85 Million Dollars, according to NBA League Office Sources.  However, the deal cannot be finalized until at least July 11th, which is the first day Free Agents can sign contracts with new teams.  Also, the price could go up.  Seattle can offer a six year deal and more money.  As reported before, Seattle is the only team that can offer him a six year deal and more money under the league rules for free agency.   Also, Orlando has to move one or two contracts to make room for Lewis under the cap.  The Magic could renounce the rights to Darco Milicic to making him an unrestricted free agent, instead of a restricted free agent, as he is right now.  Lewis was the 32nd pick in the 1998 NBA Draft and spent nine years with Seattle.  This would definitely put the Magic in good standing in the Eastern Conference.  They made the playoffs this past year, as the eighth seed in the conference, but were quickly swept by the Detroit Pistons.  Pairing Lewis with Dwight Howard would definitely be a formidable duo, in the weaker Eastern Conference.

So, the Rockets will have to look elsewhere for more fire power.  A good pickup would be Jerry Stackhouse.  He's rejuvenated his career coming off the bench in Dallas.  Not sure if he's starter material anymore, but he's definitely one of the best shooters off the bench in the NBA and would provide some definite pop and would fit in well with Rick Adelman's offensive schemes.

In the "Who In Houston Cares Anymore?" Category, Roger Clemens notched career victory #350 tonight, as the Yankees beat the Minnesota Twins 5-1.  Clemens went 8 innings, gave up 2 hits, 1 earned run, 1 walk, and struck out 4.  Not all good news for the Yankees though, Alex Rodriguez tripped over first base, and Justin Morneau's leg in the sixth inning, and he strained his hamstring.  He came out of the game at that point.  No word on whether he is going to be taking a 15-day tour on the DL, but nonetheless, more bad news for the Yanks.

Former Chicago Bears Defensive Tackle, Tank Johnson passed his DUI blood alcohol level test.  The results came back today, and he registered .072.  The legal limit in Arizona is .08.  So, Johnson was not guilty of being intoxicated when he was pulled over for speeding last week.  However, it wasn't enough to save his job with the Bears, after his other brushes with the law.

Utah Jazz Guard Derek Fisher asked to be released from his contract with the Utah Jazz, to spend time caring for his toddler daughter, who is suffering from Retinoblastoma.  That is a cancerous tumor, which is in her left eye.  If left untreated too long, it could spread to her brain.  As you may remember, Fisher had to leave the team twice during the Western Conference Finals to oversee cancer treatments on his daughter in New York.  He and his wife Candace have four children.  Fisher, who will be 33 in August, said he doesn't want to retire, but he needs time for his family.  Fisher was intregal part of three Laker Championships and was a key to Utah's turnaround in the Western Conference this year.  The Jazz have naturally granted Fisher his request.

Portland Trail Blazers number one pick, Greg Oden signed his contract with the team today.  It is a two-year contract with team options for a third and fourth year.  The contract will pay Oden just under four million for the first year and just over four million for the second year.

Serena Williams, once again, turned many heads today at Wimbledon.  This time Serena fell to the ground in pain, with a strained calf muscle.  However, she got up and not only continued, but she would go on to defeat Daniela Hauntachova in three straight sets.  She will face the top rated Justine Henin in the Quarterfinals, if she is able to go.

I was hoping Hunter Pence would have made the team.  Any snubs that you thought should have made it, but didn't?  Good news for Astros fans, Clemens and Petitite will be watching it at the house, just like the rest of us.

Reds Manager Jerry Narron was fired today, after the Reds 11-7 loss to St. Louis today.  Reds Scout and former AAA Nashville Manager, Pete Makanin will take over the team on an interim basis.  The Reds are in last place in the NL Central.  Narron was also managed the Texas Rangers, before taking over for Dave Miley, who was also fired mid season last year.

Mariners Manager Mike Hargrove resigned today, citing burn out as the reason.  Going into play today, the Mariners were only one game out of the Wild Card lead and in second place, seven games behind the LA Angels.  Bench Coach and Houstonian John McLaren will take over the club for the rest of the season.

19 year old Cristie Kerr won the Women's US Open at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina.  It was her first major victory.

Denny Hamlin gained ground on Jeff Gordon's NASCAR Points lead, as he edge Gordon to win in New Hampshire today.  Hamlin now trails Gordon by only 156 points.

The NHL Free Agency Signing Period Began today with a fury of big names switching teams.  The Buffalo Sabres lost both their Captains today.  Center Daniel Briere signed an 8-year $52 Million Dollar deal with the Philadelphia Flyers and C-Chris Drury signed a five year $35.25 Million Dollar deal with the New York Rangers.  The Rangers also signed C-Scott Gomez from division rival New Jersey for 7 years and $51.5 Million.  And, "Captain Canada" Ryan Smyth will leave the Islanders and head for the Rocky Mountains as he signs a Five Year $31.25 Million Deal with the Colorado Avalanche.

Over the past 14 years in Pittsburgh, fans have been subjected to watching a glorified AAA baseball club.  Last night, many of them showed their displeasure by walking out.  A group called "Fans For Change" wore green T-Shirts that said, "I Support The Third inning Walkout".  About 1,000 of the 27,000 at PNC Park last night headed for the exit.  Maybe they need to do it more often, because the Pirates scored six runs in the half-inning prior to the walk out, and led 6-1 as the mass exodus out of the stadium began.  The Pirates last winning season came in 1992, when they lost to the Atlanta Braves in the NLCS.  That off season they would also lose Barry Bonds and Bobby Bonilla to free agency.  Since then the Bucs have dwindled in the cellars of the then NL East and now the NL Central.  They have been "rebuilding" ever since.  It seems like a lifetime ago, but Pittsburgh used to be a model baseball franchise.  They've won five World Series (1909, 1925, 1960, 1971, & 1979).  That's just as many World Series titles as the Steelers have Super Bowl trophies.  Some of the greatest players have donned the Black and Gold of Pittsburgh... Honus Wagner, Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell, Barry Bonds, yet the Pirates these days seem to be lost at sea and the fans are restless.  Last night, was announcer Bob Walk's bobblehead night. Walk was a former pitcher for the Bucs during their better days.  Ironic that the fans would "Walk" on Walk Bobblehead night?  No, it was staged that way, said one of the organizers.  One of the fans said they are tired of Bobblehead nights and giveaways.  They want a winning team, not a bunch of reminders of winning teams from the past.  Bob Nutting, the CEO of the Pirates and Owner Kevin McClatchy say they want the same thing as the Pirates fans.  However, they say they cannot afford to do it the way the Red Sox, Yankees, and Mets do.  They are a small market team, with a limited pay roll.  But they have noted over the past few seasons, they have signed some nice free agents like Adam LaRoche and haven't traded away the top prospects as they did throughout the 90's and early part of this decade.  They also signed OF Jason Bay to a nice contract extension.  However, the 14 years of misery have the Pirates fans anxious for better days and calmer seas.  The fans voted for the new ballpark (which is by far the nicest I've ever been to) in PNC Park.  Now, they want a team that is as fantastic as the park they play in.  The Pirate Nation really wants new owners.  Nutting took over the CEO reigns from McClatchy a couple of years ago, but the result is still the same.  Hometown boy and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was interested in buying them and the Steel City fans were excited about the prospect of it, but McClatchy and Nutting are refusing to sell.  We shall see if "progress" measured by ownership and fans equals success over the next couple of years.  The question is, if someone hits a baseball and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?

My question is, do you agree with the fans, who walked out?  I do not.  And the simple reason is the ownership all ready got your money you paid for your tickets.  What do they care if you leave early or not?  If you are going to protest, the best thing to do is set up camp across from the stadium and urge other fans not to buy tickets until they improve the ball club.  Start a real grass roots effort.  Don't contribute to McClatchy and Nutting's bank books.  You only wasted about $30-$40, depending on tickets, parking, if you ate or drank anything (I always recommend Primanti's or Benkovitz, with an Iron City to drink).   So, until they improve, the best thing to do is to save your money for Steelers or Penguins season.  At least you know, you are getting a better product.

Houstonian and Sonics Small Forward Rashard Lewis
wants to come home and play for the Rockets, as our Mark Berman
reported the other night.  Lewis averaged about 23 points, 6 rebounds,
and 2 assists a game this past season with Seattle.  He had two more
years remaining on his contract, but exercised an "out" clause he had.
However, due to the way NBA contracts work with the labor agreement,
the Sonics are the only ones that can offer him the maximum deal of 6
years.  So, according to the Rockets the only way they'll be able to
swing a deal, is through a sign and trade.  According to Sonics GM, Sam
Presti, the team really wants to retain Lewis.  That is one of the
reasons they shipped Ray Allen to Boston, the night of the NBA Draft.
They want to build a team around Former Longhorn Forward Kevin Durant, former Georgetown Forward Jeff Green, and Lewis.  My question is, what is the better situation for Lewis?  Granted Houston made the playoffs last season, and the future is looking better with Rick Adelman's offense, T-Mac, Yao, and reacquiring Mike James to run the Point.  However, the Sonics future is looking bright, too, with Durant & Green.  Two sticking points there though.  They still have yet to hire a head coach.  I was actually surprised they didn't do so before the draft.  However, GM Sam Presti hasn't had the job long himself.  The other downside is they may be leaving the Pacific Northwest.  They're trying to get a new arena deal in Seattle and the people up there don't seem to be warm to that idea.  New Owner Clay Bennett is from Oklahoma City, where the Hornets have spent the better part of the last two seasons, due to the damage done in New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina.  However, the Hornets will be playing all their home games in New Orleans once again.  There has been much talk of the Sonics moving to OK City, because the Hornets drew well there.  A matter of fact, they drew better there, than they did in New Orleans (where basketball failed once before with the Jazz).  Bennett has been on record saying he'd rather move the team to Vegas or possibly Kansas City.  However, he may be trying to play his cards close to the vest.  Maybe now with Durant and Green, the people of Seattle will want to keep the Sonics there.  We'll call Frasier Crane and ask him to poll his radio audience. ;)  But, back to Mr. Lewis, he has a hefty decision to make.  If he misses the home cookin' that much, his decision should be an easy one, with more upside for an immediate result.  However, if he's looking for something that might have a little more upside down the road,  I think a little "Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs" might be more of the diet is looking for.  As a Spurs fan, I can honestly say, it doesn't matter to me where he winds up.  I will say Sonic GM Sam Presti was the former Asst GM for the Spurs and worked in their scouting department before that.  He was there for three of the four Spurs Championships, so he knows a little something about building a winning franchise and what it takes to do so.  I hate to ruffle feathers with the home crowd, but I think I'd chose to "stick and stay" (as Mr. Calkins would say) with the Sonics.  Not to mention, there's a Starbucks on every corner.  Well that could be anytown.
