If you live in Harris County, the names Pat Lykos, Kelly Siegler and C.O. Bradford should be as familiar to you as Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John McCain.  That's because either Lykos, Siegler or Bradford will likely be the next Harris County District Attorney, a job that probably has more influence on our every day lives than the presidency.

Barring a major upset in the republican race,  Siegler or Lykos will be the republican nominee.  Siegler is a top prosecutor in the D.A.'s office, but some republican insiders fear she may be tainted by the email scandal that sent her boss Chuck Rosenthal packing.  Lykos is a former cop and district court judge, who was very unpopular with prosecutors and defense attorneys during her tenure on the bench.

In years past, the republican nomination was tantamount to election.  Not this year, especially if Barack Obama tops the democratic ticket.  He could carry the democratic nominee into office.  The nominee will be C.O. Bradford, the former Houston police chief who is running unopposed in the democratic primary.  Bradford hopes to be the county's first African American D.A.  Like Siegler and Lykos, he carries baggage into the campaign, particularly his supervision of the discredited Houston Police crime lab.

Once the dust settles in the presidential sweepstakes, the Houston media will focus more intently on the D.A.'s race.  Fasten your seatbelts.  It could get nasty.  The perceived "sins" of the nominees won't be swept under the rug.  Are you ready?  Do you  have a favorite in the race?

Absolute power corrups absolutely, and that is why the DA's office will always be crokked, controversial and selective.

I know you didn't ask, but I find it hard to accept Bradford as a serious candidate for district attorney. Sure, he was acquitted by a directed verdict on a perjury charge for allegedly lying during a disciplinary hearing.

But the whole case left me with the impression that the former police chief lacks the common sense that we need in a district attorney.

And it certainly was really strange to see Bradford's law partner, Lloyd Kelley, file the federal suit that resulted in disclosures that led to Chuck Rosenthal's resignation as district attorney. Not to defend Rosenthal, but it all feels uncomfortable to me.

Lykos is good people, but she's low key. I've had drinks with her. Don't think she has the clout to win.

Kelly is the best choice, but some voters may reject her because she worked for Rosenthal.

I like Kelly Siegler. You can't argue with her record, her national ranking, or her results. Hopefully, those will be good enough to overcome any stereotypes or prejudices from her idiot of a boss.

No, they need to keep people who are doing a good job. Why throw the baby out with the bath water? Keep hard working, good people and promote them, instead of bringing in people who will have to be trained. Who will train these newbies if you throw them all out?

Siegler & Lykos will be in the April run-off. Name identification will be less important than organization. Lykos may have the advantage in that department.

My vote is for Siegler at this time. She is a go getter. What that means is she is aggressive against criminals. That is good for the A.D.A.'s, Police officers, and most importantly........its good for Houston.

My vote goes to Siegler. She's done good in her job and this seems like a natural progression in her career. To say that Lykos was unpopular as a judge is an understatement.

Siegler is the only one with experience as a prosecutor, is ranked by a variety of groups (including outsiders) as one of the top prosecutors in the country, and has successfully supervised a number of her peers.

Lykos, aside from all the issues people have with her inefficiency on the bench (3+ hour lunches), repeated violation of Constitutional rights, and inability to win in past elections for the position, has supervised a couple of clerks at a time, occasionally a handful. Her temperament is not what the people in the community deserve or need.

Bradford led HPD during the bulk of the DNA crime lab fiasco, the K-mart raid, and a number of other scandals. By some accounts, he meant well but that's not good enough in this day and age for a candidate never having prosecuted a single case or supervised a office full of lawyers and support staff.
