"May we speak in all human councils on behalf of the animals, plants, and landscapes of the earth."

My son is a fish in the water.  He loves jumping in the pool, holding his breath and flailing his limbs all around like a sea turtle going in circles.

My wife had our kid in the water at a very young age.  She taught swimming lessons for eight years, so the task of teaching our little monster to swim was right up her alley.

But this summer we decided that we'd sign him up for some parent/child swim lessons at our local pool.

He's had a great time splashing around with the other babies.  His swim lesson is the highlight of every day.   He gets so excited about going to the pool that he'll pull off his diaper, put on his own swim suit and shoes, and be waiting at the door even before my wife has a chance to say it's time to go!

Well, much to their disappointment yesterday, right when they walked up to the pool to begin another fun-filled lesson, lightning struck.  The session was cancelled.  Our fish/child was so sad.  He really wanted to go swimming.  At that moment, nothing could make him happy.

So my wife did what any good mother would do in a situation like this.  When they got home, she filled our jacuzzi bathtub to the rim and let our little fish practice all of his bubble-blowing and underwater swimming.

Our boy was in Heaven!  Granted, half the water in the tub ended up over the edge and onto the floor.  And dried water splashes decorated the mirror, but he had a blast...and that's what really matters.

Have you ever run into a situation like this? Maybe you were headed to your favorite activity, only to discover it was cancelled?

What did you do to make your little one happy?

This past Saturday my wife was on her way to get a Mother's Day massage. As she passed Oyster Creek Park in Sugar Land, she saw a little black puppy in a cage, no more than 15 feet from the side of the road.

She couldn't see whether or not the dog had any water, but there was definitely no shade anywhere in sight... and the poor animal was out there all by itself with nobody watching over it!

Running late for her appointment but still wanting to do something to help the poor dog, my wife called me and told me what she saw.  She asked that I make a phone call, because she considered the situation to be animal cruelty.

So I did. I called the Sugar Land Police dispatch line and asked that somebody check on the poor pooch.

My wife thought about the dog during her entire massage.  But she was very happy to see, as she drove home an hour later, that the dog was no longer on the side of the road.

We're not sure if our phone call to police was the reason for the rescue, but we'd like to think we were able to help save a poor puppy from the severe heat and humidity of this past Saturday.

Please remember your pets during these hot spring and summer days. They need lots of water and shade to cool off, just as we humans do.

By now you've all heard about former Fox 26 Chief Meteorologist Cecilia Sinclair's latest venture.

She is Executive Producer of a new series of educational DVDs called "Let's Learn Spanish with Frank and Paco."

Those of you who buy a copy will recognize another familiar former Fox 26 face: Christina Garza, who is one of the co-hosts.  You can learn a lot more about this project on the "Frank and Paco" website.  Here's a link:

http://frankandpaco.com/

Ceci's family got together with mine, recently, for coffee.  And she shared a funny story about her 6-year old daughter Sarah, which I told her I'd have to share with you.

Ceci and her husband brought Sarah along for a visit to an historic church in rural Texas.  As they looked around, they allowed Sarah to explore.

All of a sudden, the church bells started to peal.  And they just kept ringing.  And ringing!

Ceci and her husband looked at each other, puzzled.  No church service was in progress and no wedding was taking place.

They gathered up Sarah and started hunting.  In a closet, they finally found it: a switch, just within child's reach.  They flipped it off, and the church bells fell silent!

Just goes to show what an adventurous pre-schooler can do, if left alone for even one instant!

Groundhog Day, February 2nd, is just days away.  Many folks put a lot of stock in good old Punxsutawney Phil's weather predictions.

If you believe the hype, it all boils down to this: if Phil sees his shadow, we're in for six more weeks of winter... but if he doesn't, spring is on it's way!

So what do you think?  How much faith do YOU put in Groundhog Phil?

Would you like winter to stick around a few more weeks, or are you ready for some warmer temperatures?

Whether yours is old-fashioned...

...or new-fangled...

...I'm sure you have one.

A thermostat, that is; the thing you manipulate to control the temperature of your domicile.

We try to keep ours at 68 in the wintertime and 78 in the summer.

But, these days, depending on the weather (and the previous month's gas bill), sometimes my wife and I will goose the gauge up to 69 or even 70 if we're feeling a chill.

Likewise, in the summer months, 78 is ideal.  But there are days when we've just got to crank it down to 76, and to heck with our carbon footprint.

What about you?  What thermostat settings do you aim for?

And then...tell the truth...where does that little needle (or digital readout) usually come to rest, for real??

I couldn't help but smile and take in a deep breath of air this morning when I opened the door.  The sun was out, shining brightly, and the air was crisp and cold.

I love the cold weather (in small doses), but only if the sun is blazing and the air is dry.  Too many rainy, cold days are not high on my list.

What's your favorite kind of weather?

It's been so hot and humid, as we all know. And sometimes not even a dip in the pool will cool one off!

I lucked out this past weekend, in some ways. I spent my afternoons and evenings in the frigid studios of Fox 26, basking in the welcome icey-cool air!

Not so, though, for my wife and son. They spent the weekend at home doing mommy-and-baby things...with an AC unit that just could not keep up with the 100-plus degree temperatures and this sticky humidity!

My wife said the AC never turned off. It ran constantly! So I'm very afraid to see our next electric bill. I bet it's going to be the highest one yet!

When I asked my wife what she did to try to stay cool since the AC wasn't cutting it, she told me that she popped in some home videos from a camping trip we had taken into the cold, crisp mountains a few years ago. And she says that cool images actually worked! (Mind over matter, right?)

She says she felt refreshed as she imagined that swoosh of the air from the fan was actually a chilly breeze from the mountains.

(That's some imagination she's got!)

So I'm curious what the rest of you have been doing to cool off during these extremely hot days, especially if your AC isn't running at its best. Any thoughts or suggestions for the rest of the Fox 26 blogging community?

Oh, did I mention that my car's air conditioner went out? Yeah, that cost me an entire paycheck!!! I guess I need to follow in my wife's footsteps and imagine that I'm driving in those cool mountains!

(Eyes closed. Thinking cool thoughts.)

Sorry, it's just not working for me! Any other ideas?

I hope everybody's staying out of the sun as much as possible and drinking those fluids!

Weather experts,

Would you help us to better understand what the dew point is?

Thanks,

Summer has come way too soon!

Two weekends ago, this heat and humidity had my wife, son and I stripping down to the bare minimum...that is, our swim suits...and hitting the beach for a fun day in the sun and somewhat-cool water.

We packed a lunch, our towels, a big beach umbrella and a cooler full of water and headed down to Galveston. We found a nice, quiet corner on the beach and then lathered on the SPF 50 sunblock.

With books (and/or toys) in hand, the three of us settled into the water's edge, burying our toes in the sand. The small waves lapping upon the shore (and our legs) felt very refreshing.

Our son had the greatest time of all. He's definitely a water baby...

As we in the television news industry know, a picture's worth a thousand words. So enjoy this cute shot of my son frolicking in the sand and water.

Help, Fox 26 Meteorologists! What's the difference between isolated thunderstorms and scattered thunderstorms? My wife asked me this morning as we were watching the weather, but I didn't know exactly how to answer!

Thanks,

Ned

I just got back from my liveshot, tonight, reporting on driving in hazardous conditions.

Tethered to the live truck with its 52-foot mast, I was standing alongside an entrance ramp to 59 North.

As the cars passed by, several drivers felt compelled to honk their horns while I was live on Fox 26 News at Nine.

Not short honks, like "beep, beep," as if to say hello. More like, "heeeeeeaaaaaaooooouuuuuunk!" the better to demonstrate the Doppler Effect.

And I wondered, as I have wondered many times before, exactly WHY they do it.

Are they hoping to arrive home and turn on the TV just in time to hear the sound of THEIR car horn wafting across the speakers?

Sorry, live television moves a little faster than your Fiat.
