It's been so hot and humid, as we all know. And sometimes not even a dip in the pool will cool one off!

I lucked out this past weekend, in some ways. I spent my afternoons and evenings in the frigid studios of Fox 26, basking in the welcome icey-cool air!

Not so, though, for my wife and son. They spent the weekend at home doing mommy-and-baby things...with an AC unit that just could not keep up with the 100-plus degree temperatures and this sticky humidity!

My wife said the AC never turned off. It ran constantly! So I'm very afraid to see our next electric bill. I bet it's going to be the highest one yet!

When I asked my wife what she did to try to stay cool since the AC wasn't cutting it, she told me that she popped in some home videos from a camping trip we had taken into the cold, crisp mountains a few years ago. And she says that cool images actually worked! (Mind over matter, right?)

She says she felt refreshed as she imagined that swoosh of the air from the fan was actually a chilly breeze from the mountains.

(That's some imagination she's got!)

So I'm curious what the rest of you have been doing to cool off during these extremely hot days, especially if your AC isn't running at its best. Any thoughts or suggestions for the rest of the Fox 26 blogging community?

Oh, did I mention that my car's air conditioner went out? Yeah, that cost me an entire paycheck!!! I guess I need to follow in my wife's footsteps and imagine that I'm driving in those cool mountains!

(Eyes closed. Thinking cool thoughts.)

Sorry, it's just not working for me! Any other ideas?

I hope everybody's staying out of the sun as much as possible and drinking those fluids!

Ned

Please don't close your eyes while driving your car!

I say a prayer of thanks every day for the inventor of Air Conditioners and fans. Often wonder what the settlers did to adjust to this heat. One of my Aunts used to give each of us a cold washcloth. Either she put two cubes of ice in it or just poured ice cold water onto them. We would put those on our pulse points. Sit near a fan, with the cold cloth on our forehead. No AC in a vehicle is a nightmare in hot heat. Don't hang your head out the window either Ned!

One of our Seniors at church had this to say:
"We would go out into the field for watermelon refreshments. Remember many of us sitting under the cool breezeway or under the shady oak trees."

Don't worry! I'll keep my eyes open and I won't be hanging my head out the window either.

Thankfully, I just got my car back from the repair shop.

This heat is nuts!

In our apartment, we have the smallest unit possible, PLUS we're upstairs. The coldest our aged unit is supposed to be 10 degrees less than the outside temperature. (100 degrees outside-90 inside) according to our manager, and my sisters, both in the apt business agree. That's just the way apartments are. Luckily, our apt stays about 80 degrees, which is still too friggin hot for me. But at night, it hadn't been getting cold enough, so the maintenance guy came out--sure enough, it was low on freon. I told them, that means there's a leak, but they won't replace it until it goes kaput.
Hmmm...how does one sabotage an a/c unit without it looking sabotaged?

As for car a/cs...yep. I rarely see ANY a/c work at less than $1200.

Even at the beach it can get too hot. I used to just park my chaise in the water, and when it got REALLY hot, would pour the melted ice water in the ice chest over my head.

Ned,
I don't want to rub it in...but I got too hot and took my family to the mountains in Utah! Just yesterday we hiked at 6700 feet and the temperature was only 75 degrees. My suggestion is to RUN for higher ground. Let's face it...we tell people to go to higher ground for flooding...so why not the heat?

Ned... just got back from the Florida panhandle. I swear the heat & humidity there were worse than in Houston. Even the gulf and swimming pool waters were hot. I'm now back in H-town... cooling off!

Should we ALL join Drjim on his hiking trip?? I got into my car yesterday and the steering wheel was so hot I had to use napkins to back it out AND my seat belt was about to "brand" me with a HUGE line down my chest. I don't ever remember my car getting that hot on the inside! I don't do heat well at all-never have though. Maybe I need to wash a car again LOL?? (wink wink)

I've been beating the heat INDOORS in the A/C. It's when I get my electric bill that I'll close my eyes and imagine I'm somewhere else!!!
