The majority of the American public are fat, unhealthy slobs.  Our eating and exercise habits have not only made us fat and lazy, but dim-witted.  I can't fathom making a diet of what I see in most carts at the grocery store.  We're all guilty of a slip or two every once in a while when it comes to a tasty snack, but somehow these unhealthy 'snacks' have turned into everyday meals for most families.  Then we have the nerve to call obesity a legitimate disease!  Most, not all, but most Americans suffering from obesity have brought it upon themselves, this is comparable to blaming McDonald's for spilling hot coffee on yourself.   The lack of vitamins, trace elements and fiber, among other things, and the excess of preservatives, trans fat, and salt in the foods Americans choose to nourish (if you can call it that) their families with is killing us, slowly but surely.  Also, our dependence on red meat is not only destroying your colon, but making cardiologists rich.   Some people complain about the money big pharmaceutical companies are draining from our wallets, easy solution:  don't abuse your body to the point that we need their product.  Have high cholesterol?  Stop eating fried food and red meat!  Have a weight problem?  Don't have bariatric surgery, stop eating burger king and get off your lazy a$$ for 20 min. a day and exercise.

Why are our children riddled with disease at younger ages?  Why are our 9 year old girls growing breasts and starting their periods?  Hormones  added to feed for livestock to increase milk production, antibiotics added to chicken feed to increase production, and decrease loss.  My family has been switched to all organic dairy, meat and produce for about 18 months now.  No, processed food in my house, all whole grains (pasta, bread etc..)  and red meat is only allowed once a week.  This was the hardest transition for my carnivore of a husband.  We have active play for 1 hr, every day, sometimes inside because, you guys know, we live on the surface of the sun.  Laser tag is my fave.  We have the right to protect our health and the health of our children, it kills me to see 100lb five year olds, this is unacceptable, the saddest part is that it's not their fault, this is how they've been raised, and these are the lessons of healthy living they will pass on to their children.  I'm not an earth first hippie to any extent, although I kinda was in high school and college with more of a realist approach.  I  just stopped believing that big business has my best interests at heart.  We have abandoned our healthy eating habits in favor of conveinience.

When I'm driving along, I sometimes count the number of fat people on sidewalks. This isn't scientific, but my count usually ends with 4 out of 10 people being fat or obese.

I wonder how long some of the obese will live if they don't wise up to the fact that all the extra weight may well shorten their life.

Since 1999 I've have had a lot of weight gain. I've never been "skinny" but I was comfortable at a size 10. But when my life went on superacceleration with the stresses of my child's disability, my body went haywire. When my husband and I went on Richard Simmons, he lost 40 pounds and I gained 40 pounds. I actually gained weight eating his plan because his plan was more calories than I was eating at the time (I think I had reduced my calories down to 800). When I gained 15 pounds in one week, that was my proof that something was very wrong. I eat 1000-1200 calories a day (I measure my food), I eat organic (as much as I can), and I exercise, and a normal person would lose weight, but my adrenal glands are pumping such high levels of cortisol, it isn't even funny. Documented on 24-hour urine collection and blood. With that, other things malfunctioned, my immune system started being destroyed, and in 1999 I battled pneumonia for two months, a very hard to kill strain. That is not normal. Two years ago I turned to a holistic practitioner and I have lost 30 pounds, but I'm still obese. I have to be careful with my exercise, too much aerobic exercise and my immune system function actually decreases and I end up sick. Complicated medical explanation but trust me it is true. My immune system is getting better. I think I was only on an antibiotic once last year, which is huge, vast improvement to being on suppressive antibiotics every day. I want to look into yoga, but I do meditate with prayer to help my stress. So while it is easy to generalize that obese people are

fat because they eat too much, please know that there are many of us out here who are trying but it isn't so easy because of other reasons. But still, I'm regarded as the person who eats too much and when my husband orders the huge meal at the restaurant, and I order the diet deluxe, the server thinks they've made a mistake and tries to serve me my husband's meal. When I only eat 1/4 of that, they look at me weirdly.

I mentioned that "most, not all, but most, obese people in America have brought it upon themselves" you are obviously suffering from a severe health problem with an unpleasant side effect. My point was that many people use the health problem excuse it usually is not valid. I had about 50 lbs hangin' on my fanny after my first child, it took me 3yrs to take it off, I finally realized, a healthy diet and exercise regimen was the only real way to achieve any ground. 1000-1200 calories a day is minimal, and what I finally settled on. 800 calories a day is unhealthy, I know your a super busy mom, how can you keep your energy level up to keep up with your boys. It also puts your body into starvation mode which actually makes you gain faster. The calories you intake subsequently are stored in higher numbers. I did this and my hair fell out, all my nails broke and peeled off, my skin looked awful, not worth it. I went vegetarian for about 2 months, that's what kick started it for me.

I know I read the "most but not all" but since I had the odd perspective, I felt it necessary to post because I get all the attitudes from people as if I'm a disgusting creature on the earth. Or least that is how my perception of them just from the faces they make, comments, and looks, and frankly things like what happen at a restaurant. I think genetically modified food and high fructose corn syrup is at the heart of a lot of this as it is in everything, even bread. It took me 20 minutes before I found a bread that didn't have it. I have to also restrict my fluid intact because of another health issue, and I eat less than 10 carbs per day on the advice of my doctor for other health issues. It is the most incredibly frustrating feeling in the world. How am I keeping my energy level up? Because what I put into my body is good fresh, organic food and that has made a tremendous difference. I also take a health food digestive enzyme to help me process my intake better and it has helped. No Equal, no Splenda. No artificial anything. Now I do admit there are occasions where I have a terrible craving for something, like chocolate, but the good thing is I can go get a small square of Ghiradelli chocolate that they sell separately, and that is enough to cure that craving plus make me feel like I haven't jumped off the wagon. I was on 13 medications as of last year. I have been able to get myself off about 8 of those and I have a goal to be pharmaceutical-company free by the end of this year.
