I'm interested in opinions from my fellow bloggers on the law congress recently passed allowing commercial airline pilots to fly to age 65, originally they were forced to retire at age 60.  Is this dangerous?  Expensive?  Arguements I've heard are as follows;  Older pilots with higher seniority are paid a considerable amount more than a young entry level pilot would be paid, they're retirement benifits are also inflating the longer they work so the cost is obviously be passed on to consumers and government bail-outs.  We've all also heard about the recent death of an older Continental captian due to cardiovascular difficulties while he was actually flying the plane, his 1st officer had to land the plane!!!  What are ya'lls opinions?

HereandNow,

The change is good one. It replaces a rule put in place years ago when Americans had a shorter life expectancy.

Pilots still have to prove they remain in good health, under the new rule.

I know annual physicals are mandatory but can they even get social security benifits?

What's wrong with that? Social Security has rules limiting how much a person can earn in a year without a reduction in their Social Security benefits, until they reach the full-retirement age, which I think is 66 or 67.

If we can have presidents running this country in their 60's or 70's, why not? As long as they are in good health and love to fly/work, I do not have a problem with it. Now days, people are working longer past the retirement age because of the cost of living. I will also see myself working till in my mid or late 60s. Cost too much to live and you can't live on social security these days. I do not have enough 401k money to survive.

Why do airlines have "old"pilots is simple,it is called "Flight Hours",you must have X number of "flight hours"to be a commericial pilot{set be the government}.It takes a lot of YEARS to get that many hours,by the time you have been flying long enough to get the hours you are an "old person". As for the pilot that had a heart attack that has nothing to do with age, that happens to young and old alike.

Like any other job a person has been with the company in their position for years makes more than a new hire in the same position.

By the way there is no such thing as a "young entry level pilot",the only place that you can be a "young"pilot is in the military, not in commerical avaition.

Actually there is such thing as a young, new hire pilot. they are hired as young as 25, with a base salary of around 35-45 thousand.

I would be more afraid of the "young" new pilot. They are hiring pilots still wet behind the ears. I've asked several friends in the industry (all commercial pilots who work for a time share company) if they would be comfortable on the line flying passengers with the bare number of hours that is currently being used for hiring. They all responded with "no". New pilots are making $18 an hour with a yearly salary of around $40 thousand. It's not a lot (especially after paying for school) but it is more attractive and better paying than teaching flight school, which is the typical route for new commercial pilots to build up hours. Instead, they are flying passengers while building their hours and confidence.
Even scarier, with airlines sucking up would-be flight instructors there will soon be a shortage of quality instructors.

We should concentrate on those senile old Supreme Court Judges who can't get it right the first time.
Bubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble.
To date the Supreme Court have reversed more than 200 decisions and Roe v. Wade will be the next in line.
People, do you realize how much hurt a wrongly decided situation does to those involved.
A 4 to 5 is not a decisive vote but one made to dispense with the issues.
They have NO business making laws and should only interpret the Constitution of what is left to interpret.

You are SO right!
When Bush was elected, I had strong feelings about the oil gig, but One positive point of his election, was that He MAY appoint "rational" judges!

Geez, How could anyone consider the possibility of someone (maybe) wanting to change the WHOLE structure of our country?

FEW people consider that the judicial is the MOST IMPORTANT arm of the legislature!
They have the ultimate decision on any legislation!
They can either uphold our constitution, or change EVERY statute!!

Though power, money & influence are important, you would think that there is-- SOMEONE on this panel--that still holds the values of this Country dear!

i don't think it makes a difference how old the pilot is. most commercial aircraft are flown by computer. pilots are there to watch the gauges and take over if an emergency arises. other than that, they don't really fly the plane.
