The Big Dog's Blog

I came across this blog from and unnamed source.....interesting twist, if it's true. More interesting that it hasn't been reported that I know of.

"In 1961, a young African-American man, after hearing President John F. Kennedy's
challenge to, 'Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for
your country,' gave up his student deferment, left college in Virginia and
voluntarily joined the Marines.

In 1963, this man, having completed his two years of service in the
Marines, volunteered again to become a Navy corpsman. (They provide
medical assistance to the Marines as well as to Navy personnel.)

The man did so well in corpsman school that he was the valedictorian and became
a cardiopulmonary technician. Not surprisingly, he was assigned to the Navy's
premier medical facility, Bethesda Naval Hospital, as a member of the commander
in chief's medical team, and helped care for President Lyndon B. Johnson after
his 1966 surgery.

For his service on the team, which he left in 1967, the White House
awarded him three letters of commendation.

What is even more remarkable is that this man entered the Marines and
Navy not many years after the two branches began to become integrated.

While this young man was serving six years on active duty, Vice
President Dick Cheney, who was born the same year as the Marine/ sailor,
received five deferments, four for being an undergraduate and graduate student
and one for being a prospective father.

Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, both five years younger than the
African-American youth, used their student deferments to stay in college until
1968. Both then avoided going on active duty through
family connections.

Who is the real patriot? The young man who interrupted his studies to
serve his country for six years or our three political leaders who beat
the system? Are the patriots the people who actually sacrifice something or
those who merely talk about their love of the country?

After leaving the service of his country, the young African-American
finished his final year of college, entered the seminary, was ordained
as a minister, and eventually became pastor of a large church in one of
America 's biggest cities.

This man is Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the retired pastor of Trinity United
Church of Christ.

Faithful member for the past 28 years,

Live Your Best Life Each and Every Day!!"

Came across this interesting blog posted by CNN Contributor, Roland Martin. What are your thoughts on her comments and Martin's opinion on the lack of media coverage on her remarks relative to her importnace in the current cabinet.? March 31, 2008 Forget Rev. Wright: Condi talks tough about race in America Posted: 06:24 PM ET

Sen. Barack Obama has called for a national discussion on race in America, and one of the folks who sure didn’t hold back when asked was Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

ALT TEXT

In a discussion with the editorial board of the Washington Times on Thursday, Rice called racism a “birth defect” of America, and said that black Americans have loved the nation even when it didn’t love us.

The Times reported:

“Black Americans were a founding population,” she said. “Africans and Europeans came here and founded this country together — Europeans by choice and Africans in chains. That’s not a very pretty reality of our founding.”

“As a result, Miss Rice told editors and reporters at The Washington Times, “descendants of slaves did not get much of a head start, and I think you continue to see some of the effects of that…”

“That particular birth defect makes it hard for us to confront it, hard for us to talk about it, and hard for us to realize that it has continuing relevance for who we are today,” she said.

Rice later said: “America doesn’t have an easy time dealing with race,” Miss Rice said, adding that members of her family have “endured terrible humiliations.”

“What I would like understood as a black American is that black Americans loved and had faith in this country even when this country didn’t love and have faith in them — and that’s our legacy,” she said.

Wow, was all I could say to that.

What was even more stunning was the relative lack of coverage on this issue.
I was told CNN’s “The Situation Room” did a piece on her comments Friday.   But when I surfed the Net to see follow-up stories in other papers, it has pretty much been ignored, except for some briefs.

Why would the mainstream media be so dismissive of Rice’s comments? Imagine if Rev. Al Sharpton or Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. said such a thing. Do you think they would have gotten ripped?

The fact of the matter is that Rice was right on the money with her comments, and should be commended. She spoke honestly and openly about the issue, and deserves credit for speaking the truth.

I just wish my colleagues in the media would do a better job at advancing the issue of race in America and our sordid history.

We went bonkers about the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, but when Rice, the nation’s chief diplomat, spoke truthfully, it barely made a ripple.

Vodka Brand Wants Call Girl to Be Latest 'Butt Girl' Georgi Offers 'Six Figures' to Fallen Governor's Paramour Be Drink's Pinup CHICAGO (AdAge.com) -- The owner of Georgi vodka said he is in talks to put the derriere of former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer's call girl on the backside of every bus in New York. There's a chance Ashley Dupre could front a new vodka brand. There's a chance Ashley Dupre could front a new vodka brand. Star Industries CEO Martin Silver, who owns U.S. rights to the brand, told Ad Age his firm is making headway in talks to pay Ashley Dupre a low six-figure amount to be this year's Georgi "butt girl," the annual pinup the brand posts on the backs of city buses and the tops of taxicabs.

'Like Paris Hilton or something'
"The girls' butt we have on there now is pretty good, but if you can get [Dupre] to do it, and to make some personal appearances, it's like Paris Hilton or something," said Mr. Silver. "We are trying to work out a contract," he added.

He said one possibility was to create a brand called No. 9, which was Mr. Spitzer's designation by the call-girl service, but said nothing had yet been decided.

Mr. Silver said his company sprung quickly because he felt the word-of-mouth buzz Ms. Dupre generates would boost his vodka's profile and sales. He said he expects many other brands to, um, come calling.

"This girl's gonna get inundated [with offers]," he said. "She's worth a lot of money."

Ms. Dupre's attorney, Don Buchwald, partner at Kelley Drye & Warren, said only that he was "not aware of any endorsement or any deals."

IS ANYONE SUPRISED AT THIS, IN THIS DAY AND AGE............DO SOMETHING NAUGHTY, ILLEGAL, ETC............GET FAME AND CASH FOR YOUR DIRTY DEEDS.

IF THIS DEAL GETS MADE, DO YOU THINK IT WILL BACKFIRE ON THE BRAND, OR WILL IT INCREASE SALES? ANY OTHER THOUGHTS ON THE STATE OF OUR SOCIETY?

The hot story of the week is focusing on Presidential candidate Barack Obama's recently retired minister of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Reverend Dr. Jeremiah Wright. Rev Wright's messages have been characterized by some as racist, inflammatory and anti-American.

My question to you is, Does the message of Rev Wright affect your impressions of Obama? What's your take on this whole situation?

The link below will take you to an overview of Rev Wright and Trinity United Church of Christ by ABC News

The link below will take you to an interview of Rev Wright on Fox News Channel "Hannity & Colmes," responding to the controversy surrounding his messages.

West University is in the process of trying to pass an ordinance that would ban cell phone usage by drivers in school zones..............

Good idea? Bad idea?

I'm just as concerned with our children's safety as any parent should be, but what's next on the ban list..........what about: eating and driving, putting on makeup and driving, shaving and driving, fumbling with papers and driving, talking to a passenger and driving.......???? How would such an ordinance be enforced and at what cost to taxpayers as well as what other law enforcement activity not get done to shift resources to the proposed ordinance/

What do you think?

According to a reort I heard on KTRH radio, there is a group called Students For Concealed Carry On Campus that is pushing forth a bill in the Texas legislature to sanction students on Texas college campuses to be allowed to carry guns. Of course they would have to gone through the permit process and licensed to carry a concealed weapon.

We've heard both sides of the gun argument in general, and that's not what I'm offering up for discussion............Do you think it's a good idea to have college students packing heat? If you were/are the parent of a college student, would you be for or against this idea?

I read a very interesting article in today's HChron about the push for diversity in the Harris County DA's office in the wake of Chuck Rosenthal's departure and associated revelations about racism, etc.............

I was absolutely taken back by a quote from 29 year veteran of the DA's office and head recruiter, Marie Munier..............she states, "I think we're below where I would like to see us as far as African-Americans and Hispanics......I would like to see more. With all the stuff in the media lately, it''s like someone dumped a bucket of cold water on my head and made me say, we do need to look at this."

We live in one of the most diverse cities in the country and I guess Miss Munier must have been living on Mars! Her statements imply the District Attorney's office has been simply put a "good ole boy's club," when it comes to diversity and reality.

Houston deserves the best when it comes to public servants. The DA's head recruiter needed to get her head out of the sand first, before someone dumped the bucket of cold water on her head! If she represents what's left in the DA's office.......maybe more than just Rosenthal need to go.

What do you guys think???????

The recent allegations brought forth by The New York Times of McCain's affair with a lobbyist and using his influence in a matter she was involved in.........

Do you believe the allegations? Will it affect his ability to get into The White House?

I'm pretty tired of seeing tax payer money wasted on congressional hearings, but now that it's over and who knows what will become of it........let's just cut to the chase!

Give us your order of who's most to least credible between: Petite, Clemens and McNamee.

Rumor is that if Clemens is found to have been untruthful under oath, President Bush will pardon him of any potential punishment. Agree or disagree.

Can we now move on to attacking some real problems...................
