JESUS MUST COME DOWN, SAYS ACLU

Jesus has no place in a city courthouse in Slidell, LouIsiana, says the American Civil Liberties Union.

The ACLU asked court officials to remove the Jesus portrait from the lobby within a week or face the possibility that the organization will file a lawsuit to force the issue.

Several people have complained to the ACLU about the picture, and one has filed a written complaint, prompting the organization to intervene. The ACLU also wants the court to remove lettering beneath the portrait that says, "To know peace, obey these laws."

The organization sent a letter Wednesday to court officials saying the display violates the First Amendment and therefore must come down. The ACLU says it violates the Establishment Clause, which holds that church and state must remain separate. The organization says the portrait's presence in the court building serves to advance religion.

Slidell City Court Judge Jim Lamz says the display has been in place for nine years. He says he will study the constitutional question and hopes to make a decision soon. Lamez says, "I was shocked and disappointed to receive the letter. To my knowledge, no one has made a complaint. I'm disappointed the ACLU released their letter to the press either before or simultaneously to us, which indicates they're not interested so much in a resolution, but in confrontation and publicity."

The image is a 16th century Russian Orthodox icon called "Christ the Savior," — most likely a reprint. In the picture, Jesus is shown holding open a book to display two pages, each with a biblical quotation about judging correctly and wisely. The quotations are written in Russian.

Since the ACLU's objection, the court's staff has been trying to track down who hung the picture in the court and why.

What do you think? Should the Jesus portrait come down?

NO! The picture needs to stay up. They dont like it they dont have to look at it. This is what is wrong with people today. I mean dang I hope they keep it up and let a jury decide. this is just plain crazy. Next they will want churches to quit advertising on tv.

I still haven't forgotten the Bible that had to be removed from a case in front of a Harris County courts facility.

The county lost the case when it tried to keep the Bible in place.

CHIEF JUSTICE MOORE….. The separation of church and state is a metaphor based on bad history and worse law. It has made a positive chaos out of judgments, and it should be frankly and explicitly abandoned. It’s not attempting to establish a religion, which is what the first amendment forbids. It is merely acknowledging the role that God and the Bible have played in the formation of U.S. law. Choosing godless judges, we've thrown reason out the door. Too soft to put a killer in a well-deserved tomb, but brave enough to kill that child before it leaves the womb, you think that God's not angry that this land is a moral slum. Sadly, there are very, very few judges in this apostate land and this situation is not going to change until there is a revival in the churches and the fear of God is proclaimed from the pulpits.

It should stay and the ACLU need to go you know where..

IT LOOKS LIKE A GREEK ICON . IF THE PORTRAIT IS NOT IN THE COURTROOM AND IS ON DISPLAY AS PART OF THE ORIGINAL ARCHITECTURE 0F THE BUILDING , I THINK IT SHOULD STAY . COURT HOUSES ARE ALSO WHERE PEOPLE GET MARRIED AND OTHER FUNCTIONS RIGHT ? SO WHAT IS THE BIG DEALIO ? I THINK MOST PEOPLE THERE IN SLIDELL ARE ROMAN CATHOLIC SO IT IS A PART OF THE LOCAL CULTURE OR FLAVOR IF YOU WILL . IN THIS CASE , EVEN IF I AM MUSLIM , I THINK A.C.L.U. IS WRONG FOR PROTESTING A PICTURE OF JESUS ( ISA ) , PEACE BE UPON HIM .

Gonna get me on my soapbox LOL! I'll be short and sweet. If all Christians would take a stand, I mean a real stand, then people like this would not run over us. We are the ones standing there and letting all of this happen!! It took ONE woman to get prayer out of schools. Imagine what would/could happen if all Christians took a stand for what it right!

I'm still interested in hearing what court officials have to say about why the picture was put on the wall in the first place.

It took a lot more than one woman to get prayer out of schools. I am glad she had the courage to speak up.
More people have suffered death, injustice, torture and more in the name of Jesus then anything else,(other then money, but money is the lifes blood of Christ in all religions).
Such a symbol needs to go from a place where law, not mythology, is supposed to be practiced.
