this is a picture of me taking a picture of myself in an autozone security camera. (i'm wearing white standing at the door.) my photo doesn't do it justice because the image i could see this morning was sharp and colorful. i hope it got good video of the guys who robbed this store in north houston... where i was doing my live reports this morning.

from what the investigators say, it was a crazy string of events:

1st- gunmen run into store demanding cash (11:30pm -ish)

2nd- pizza delivery guy shows up (to buy an auto part, although the story might be a bit cooler if he were actually there to deliver a pizza.) he gets jumped and robbed by the "lookout" man at the front of the store.

3rd - a houston police officer drives by on patrol and sees what's happening.  that makes the lookout man yell "cop!" and all the robbers run out of the store and hop the fence in the back to get away.

the robbers were in such a hurry they:

a/ left their getaway car running

b/dropped $3,000 in cash

c/both of the above

if you answered "c" you must have been watching this morning! good for you!

but there's no indication of any shots being fired, no one seriously hurt, and a police officer right there when you need him. (please don't take that the wrong way. we don't all have personal police protection so we know we will usually see an officer after we have a chance to call for help. our officers do a great job.)

and i think the only reason the officer could see there was trouble is because the pizza man was jumped in the front of the store. the other gunman were in the back, out of sight trying to get the cash.

as i was saying this morning, if it's possible to have an armed robbery with a happy ending, this may be it.

so now... how about it? do you have any stories of something that started out terrible but had a happy ending?

I walk around a corner and two guys are dealing drugs. One has a pistol in his front pants. My actions were faster than his reaction. I pulled out my flashlight and turned the beam on in his face. He drew his gun and my partner drew his. I little three year old, who should have been inside since it was after midnight, was sitting in a car between me and the dealer and started crying. I kept the light in his face but told him that he could walk away or get shot but I only cared about the kid in the car. He told me to turn the light off but I told him that was not going to happen. I told him to back away and go around the corner and he had my word we would not go after him. All I cared about was the kid. Turns out momma was inside getting high and put the baby asleep in the car while she got high. This was one of my first experiences with drug dealers and kids, sadly it was not my last. I will always remember that.

The mother was taken to jail and the kid went with grandma.
I have only had one case where the state took the baby away from the family. It took me a week of conversations, recording the parents, whom the entire family turned out to be dealers. I hope THAT baby was placed in a good home.

I was working at a Circle K years ago on 1960. At 11:20 PM a black male walks in ask's to use the restroom. I told I am not allowed to do that but told him to go ahead anyway. I noticed he was acting a little hinky so I dropped all the cash in the safe except for a few bucks. He came back out to the counter and put a 380 against my stomach. He only got 8 dollars, stood there with the pistol against my stomach..rolled his eyes and left. I taped a paperbag of the spot he put his hand on the glass door. A deputy finally shows up.."I got the call but I was in the car wash..don't ever try to drive out with the thing still running", his light bar was hanging off the car. Turned out the night before he shot a black clerk at another store..he said I was lucky. Also, the nice hand print he left on the glass led to his capture. he got 15 years, me I got a new job. ( I got robbed their too but thats another story)

in my opinion, it's not a happy ending b/c they didn't actually get caught. so very likely they'll strike somewhere else again. glad the store didn't end up being out the money and nobody ended up harmed...but the turds are still on the lose.

i do agree that police presence is a great deterrant. too bad we're operating at a major deficit.

Andrea: Well, so far, it looks like I'll be able to make it to the next blogger get together. Maybe we'll meet up there.
