yes that is news! but i went to the church and didn't go in.

i'm talking about the co-cathedral of the sacred heart, of course. the brand new catholic church in downtown houston. i did all of my morning live shots looking at the church from this angle and this distance. i had hopes i would be able to go in, but for security issues or whatever else needs to go on in there, that was an impossibility.

i did enjoy looking at the video that our photographer shot inside though during media day last week. it looks gorgeous and grand.  the cost of it, $49 million dollars seems to bug alot of people because "it should have gone to the poor." but  bishop fiorenza addressed that by saying the catholic diocese continues to take care of the poor and needy just like it always has,  and the money donated to build this cathedral was donated because people -wanted- the church to build a new cathedral. he says even the "poor" donated money because having a beautiful place of worship was important to them.

since i'm not catholic, i was worried about getting everything right this morning. so far i haven't heard any complaints and for that i'm grateful. and i'd like to say even if you're not catholic, i think there's plenty to enjoy about this building. relics, newly commissioned artwork, even spectacular stained glass windows protected by an exterior window built to withstand 180 mph winds! no kidding! (i'm told they build these cathedrals to last for centuries). this may be a go-to place when another cat-5 is headed our way.

ok.. i'm just blabbing... it's your turn. tell me what you think about the new co-cathedral. do you plan to go in for a tour? a mass?

Just another example of a huge waste of money in my opinion. That makes about as much sense as spending all those millions on primaries, and campaigns. I won't go in because I'd probably just bust into flames.

Andrea,

I'm not Catholic either. I also think it's beautiful. I'm troubled by the amount of money poured into building it, though.

$49 million is too high.

Of course, the last archdiocese audit shows the ardiocese with assets of $256 million. If you deduct financial liabilities, the church had about $56 million in net assets.

Catholics give about $10 million a year to the diocese.

The diocese is served by over 150 parishes and missions.

Andrea: Our Catholic church did not take that much to build and I believe it, too, is beautiful. In fact, I'll post some pictures to my blog. I got to be a founding member something that will likely never happen again in my lifetime (just like someone who was interviewed said). The pastor of Sacred Heart, Fr. Troy Gateley married Jeff and I when he was at St. John Vianney. At least I think he is still the pastor.

I think this stems from traditions in our faith. You know when the apostles were converting people, they allowed people to intermix their own traditions so as not to lose people. Like our rituals at Christmas, Easter, etc., were from pagan traditions. The Romans loved their gold, so I think some of this was just from old traditions. Being Catholic, when I went to the St. Peter display at the museum, (I think it was St. Peter, maybe it was the history of the Vatican--can't remember), anyway, I was very bothered by the fine threads and gold, gold, gold. I don't think Jesus would approve. How much do you think it would cost today to build the White House? Probably a lot of money. It is symbolic to the country, just as our cathedrals are to Catholics. Yes, the money could be spent better elsewhere. It takes a great deal, however, before a church is built in the diocese.

Chassan--The money given to the diocese is actually from separate collections each parish gives. Each church has their own collections to manage each church. We also have second collections each week for different world missions, propagation of the faith, St. Vincent de Paul, ta

St. Vincent de Paul, at our church we have a huge food pantry, so the audit of the what Catholics give to the diocese is a bit skewed.
