The United Nations Food Agency said Tuesday the world is facing a silent tsunami when it comes to soaring food prices.

Kids' Meals is a meals on wheels program designed just for kids!  Nearly 80% of HISD kids are on a free or reduced lunch plan, but there's nothing to help their younger siblings.  My photographer Bart and I tagged along for a route this afternoon.  We got a kick out of our driver.  She lets the kids/families know she's in the neighborhood by honking her horn.  She liked to apply the brakes rather quickly, too, which sent Bart flying across the bags of vegetables!  He couldn't get out of the van fast enough.

Here's a short clip taken once he made it out.

They hope to expand to a lot more neighborhoods soon!

Perhaps they need to expand their "giving" to the single working Mom's barely making ends meet in other areas of Houston then the "wards". I saw that report and noticed the nice truck and a few cars in the driveways of these "needy" families. One even had a Deere riding mower. Just great.

What I saw looked like ILLEGAL immigrants or at least people that could not speak ENGLISH getting food when there are plenty of US citizens that are hungry and need food.

i agree w/that m11!

it's amazing how some of these kids can be so "needy" when the parents usually have enough bling on to blind you and are looking oh so fly at the bus stop!

*scratching my head* kind of makes you wonder!

perhaps they need to be more educated on what their priorites should be when it comes to spending.

btw, have you ever checked out some of those "needy" shopping carts at the grocery store. you're pretty likely to find some of the nicest cuts of meats, seafood, national brands, etc. i'm not saying a person isn't entitled to a little "luxury" now and again, but their shopping cart sure does what i have that i can modestly afford in mine.

Back when I was needy, there wasn't a shopping "cart"... it was a hand basket, and it usually had things like Mac and Cheeses, bread, sandwich meat, potted mead food product, etc.
Still, always worked to get what I want. Never took handouts.

Yeah, my wife works at a dental office and told me about a mother and daughter that came in driving a brand new chrysler 300(of course what else P.O.S. car but still brand new)they both had Coach purses and nice clothes and were trying to use medicaid but my wifes office doesnt take it and yes they were most likely ILLEGAL because the mother didnt speak any english and the daughter spoke broken english, they just milk this help as much as they can when some US citizens cant even get the help they need

That's why American's are locked up in prison, women are working the streets or other illegal jobs, there are panhandlers on the streets, people can't keep their houses, the rich are getting arrested by the FBI, the crack heads have to kill cause they can't afford to get a quick fix, gas prices are going up, the debt to savings ratio is high, tuitions have gone up, thugs are breeding like flies, fraud is high, and that's why we are in a recession! It's all their fault. We are in trouble and it's all their fault.

My dream has come true! I'm so thankful to report in the city that means the most to me. I'm the one in the newsroom who's excited to cover any story, from the most powerful hurricane to the most mundane city council meeting. While I certainly don't find comfort in reporting on another's troubles, the people I meet each day inspire me in some way, and I hope they affect you, too!
