In one week we've heard of at least two 14 year old girls dealing with  apparently unwanted or unknown pregnancies.  The most recent one was brought to our attention Wednesday when an 8th grader at Cedar Bayou Junior School in Baytown gave birth in a school bathroom.  The newborn died.  Police are investigating it as a homicide.  They initially said the girl tried to flush it down the toilet.

These two incidents have renewed the powerful debate surrounding sex education.  Goose Creek I.S.D. has an abstinence only based curriculum that starts in junior high.  Recent studies, such as one done by the Texas Department of Health, have shown abstinence only programs simply don't work and go completely against what we already know about teens and sex: they're having it!  Do you support only learning  "just say no?"  What WOULD you like your kids to be taught?  Some states don't have any guidelines.

Also, I'm curious, does the student's age, 14, change or define your opinion of what happened?

Obviously something needs to be done. Parents won't let teachers teach it at school. Parents refuse to do it themselves. So the kids are turning to each other.

society is to blame I have seen 6 year olds wearing mini skirts their stupid parents dress them up like this "cause showing off your body is beutiful"they learn on tv that life is all about sex they wanna do it the kids are left alone unsupervised you know what there gonna do
A YOUNG GIRL THAT GETS PREGNANT HAS NO ONE AND I STRESS THIS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TO TURN TO HER FAMILY KICKS HER OUT AND CALLS HER A BLEEP SHE GO'S TO CHURCH AND IS CALLED A BLEEP
SHE GO'S TO SCHOOL AND IS CALLED A BLEEP
SHE GO'S TO PLANNED PARENTHOOD AND GETS JEERED AT BY THE CHURCH CROWD AND IS CALLED A MURDERING BLEEP
SHE GOES TO THE HOSPITAL AND IS TOLD WE CANT HELP YOU BECAUSE YOU DONT HAVE INSURANCE
SHE IS AFRAID CONFRONTING THE DADDY OF THE BABY AND OF COURSE HIM AND HIS PARENTS WILL SAY ITS NOT HI
THESE GIRLS DO NOT KNOW THAT THEY HAVE RIGHTS THEY ARE JUST CHILDREN THEY NEED TO BE EDUCATED
AND IF PEOPLE DONT LIKE IT TELL EM TO HOMESCHOOL

SOMEONE NEEDS TO SHOW THESE KIDS A BETTER WAY
AND IT CAN START AS EASY AS "HAVE SOME CONDOMS"

Whatever happened to parents being parents?? It's NOT up to teachers OR society to teach a child what's right and wrong. It has to start with the parents. The problem is, parents these days want everyone else to raise their kids. Then, when they get into trouble, they blame everyone else. A 14 year old 'trying to FLUSH the baby down the toilet'? That's a crime, and she and her parents should be prosecuted.

Sally, I think instead of the ol "sex education" classes in school, it should be "life Education". It's not all about "protection" and other birth control, it's about teaching responsibility and the future outcome of our choices today. Teach how much it costs to raise a family, the consequences of abortions and killing your own child. It's easy to teach about sex, it's harder to teach about life. Just my opinion...

That's a very good idea Tex.

Yeah, I like that approach too. Still, I don't know that kids that age really have an appreciation for the value of a dollar yet. I gave my 13 year old son a long talk explaining the whole thing, and gave him a condom. You know they are going to do it, just need him to be responsible.

I'm with Texas-ex here. I personally disagree with giving a 13 year old a condom. Isn't it illegal for 13 year old children to have sex anyway? Why don't you give him clean needles just in case he wants some heroin? Maybe some home-grown pot so he doesn't have to buy it on the street?

I'm not judging your parenting style...that's your business. I just feel strongly that the reason our kids are behaving so badly is that we expect so little from them.

I gave my daughter the talk at 11, the same age I was when my mom gave it to me. (She already knew the basics..she'd been asking questions over the years since she was six.) She said the same thing I did....Eeeww!! But I have reinforced over and over that sex is for GROWNUPS, preferably MARRIED grownups. (Do I think she'll wait till she's married? No, I'm not totally delusional, but we're trying!)
I truly can't understand why parents today, most of them my age (42) and younger, are so STUPID when it comes to sex ed. I mean, come on, we are the era of Prince, of Madonna, for pete's sake!! My daughter asks me a question about sex, I answer it. Mom, were you a virgin when YOU got married? she asked me. I answered her honestly. No, I wasn't, but not waiting was THE BIGGEST mistake I ever made. People say, you actually TOLD your daughter you WERENT a virgin? What am I gonna do? Lie to her? And when she finds out her dad and I lived together before we got married, do they HONESTLY thing she is so stupid as to think we DIDNT sleep together?!
I'm NOT glad this happened, but it has reinforced what I've told my daughter over and over...kids CANNOT have sex. The fact that these girls are only THREE years older than she is drives it home to her in a BIG way.

My dream has come true! I'm so thankful to report in the city that means the most to me. I'm the one in the newsroom who's excited to cover any story, from the most powerful hurricane to the most mundane city council meeting. While I certainly don't find comfort in reporting on another's troubles, the people I meet each day inspire me in some way, and I hope they affect you, too!
