Families across the country are struggling to afford the high cost of college.  Students are doing whatever it takes to pay their way...one, two, sometimes three jobs, loans, pell grants, you name it!

So, understandably, they're a little peeved to learn convicted sex offenders are legally dipping into the pool of financial aid.  This, at a time when the country doesn't have enough money (in the form of pell grants) to give to the students most deserving of it.

Under a 1994 law, prisoners aren't eligible for Pell Grants.  BUT, there's a loophole.  Once sexual predators are transferred from prison to a treatment center, they qualify!  A Florida congressman has been working for five years to try and close the loophole.  His bill has passed the House, but a similar education bill has also passed the Senate.  The Senate version doesn't affect pell grants for sex offenders.  The two chambers will meet next month to try and come up with a solution.

What do you think?  Should sex offenders, even though they're still under round the clock supervision in treatment centers, be able to get Pell Grants?  According to some treatment centers, once a few offenders get the money they drop the courses and buy things like DVD players, TVs, etc..

SallyMac,

NO, NO, NO. Is that clear enough. Let me say it again, NO. Pell Grants should be reserved for students in need, not sex offenders.

Well, if they drop the course and keep the money that's fraud and they should go back to jail.

Rehabilation or recidivism? There is no simple solution to this problem...but, everything has a cost. What are we (as a nation) willing to give up to help rehabilitate criminals? Have we tried education? Why are there not vouchers submitted directly to the colleges directly from the government in the name of the offender when a grant to help in education is awarded? Who is to say who is MORE deserving of such finances? Is a sex offender LESS deserving of an education? If so, are they doomed to repeat their mistakes? Would a non sex offender be willing to give up his/her government grant to a sex offender to help in rehabilitation? Or, would they rather give the offender more reason (not enough education) to re-offend? HAVE we tried education? Rehabilitation or recidivism?

And there are the ones out here who have no desire to further their education and do something positive with their lives. As long as they don't re-offend what's the problem?

we are trying education with them. there are groups that meet to help them not re-offend, there are classes they can attand to learn whatever it is they wish to, there is help out there for those that wish to recieve it.
re-education is a good idea for some. the problem is how to tell which ones.
i can say that a well adjusted kid from a good family should come first for the grants.
the prisonners should be in line after the public.
so yes, it is a good idea, no, they should not come first.
if there is no more money for the prisonners, after the people that aren't in trouble with the law have all applies, then maybe they should try what pta moms have been doing for years to raise money...have a bake sale, or sell the art they create, or make videos for sale of what like is really like there so others won't want to end up there with them.
there is alot they can do, for themselves and others if people would just think it over and come up with ideas they can do for themselves.

Sally, that is uninformed reporting! You should be ashamed of yourself for posting junk like that.

First of all, sex offenders are undesirables - I'll grant you that.

Second, how do you weigh giving people a second chance versus not allowing them to partake in rights afforded others?

Third, to state that "they" buy DVD players etc is something a lot of people likely do, not just sex offenders. Or wait, does being a sex offender preclude one to squander money on DVD players? Wow, an amazing stat!

Pell Grants are given to the eligible. That's the bottom line.

If you take them away from sex offenders where does it end? Are smokers next? Then whites? Jesus, you people are like the Pharisees!

If ANYONE commits fraud they are required to repay the money. If they fail to the US Government takes their income tax refunds and, short of that, they will lock your buttt up at last resort.

I don't think that Pell Grants should be available to sex offenders or any other criminals. They should (the ex-criminals), if they want a better education, work a 60 hour week to put themselves through school like so many other young college students.

Standupguy - comparing this situation to smokers or whites is kinda off base. Smokers are not breaking the law. And being white, last I heard, was not illegal. We are talking about criminals here. Not your average everyday citizens.

Grants are awarded to the eligible just as StandUpGuy stated. Efforts of some legislators would disallow sex offenders access to grants. An offense is an offense. Sex offenders bug me. So do murderers and others of similar ilk. I would imagine non offenders drop classes and squander the funds. That will come back to bite them in the behind in the way of financial penalites and more. I am wondering if Sally would have ANY offender be denied a grant. Incedentally, a male friend demonstrated poor judgment when at age 18 he had consensual sex with a 15 year old girl who represented herself as older. Her parents liked him until he withdrew his attention from her essentially "breaking up". Then they filed charges akin to statutory rape. He will be forced to register as a sex offender when he is freed from prison. Guilty of immature bad judgment, YES! A predator - hardly. While in prison the young man was brutally sodomized, attempted suicide several times, and his life is never going to be the same. Let's be careful of removing the slim shred of hope some have. Otherwise, you might as well just forget court... just install a firing squad outside the courthouse and execute each and every offender because that is where I see this heading. Sally, be VERY careful that you never, ever make ANY mistakes in this life that could land you on the bad side of the law. You could be end up in the same shape as those you are preaching against. Am I supporting violent predators who harm vulnerable citizens? OF COURSE NOT! Just know that making blanket statements that all offenders are not merit

My dream has come true! I'm so thankful to report in the city that means the most to me. I'm the one in the newsroom who's excited to cover any story, from the most powerful hurricane to the most mundane city council meeting. While I certainly don't find comfort in reporting on another's troubles, the people I meet each day inspire me in some way, and I hope they affect you, too!
