It's South By Southwest time again guys.  And this year, yours truly will be up there covering the bands, the fans and anything else that may catch my ear.   The annual music conference has become a big money maker for the city of Austin of late.  Hundreds of bands play over several days on almost every stage in town.  It used to be a place where underground and unsigned bands were showcased for industry types but now it's just a corporate schmooze fest.  No one gets signed there and the industry folks that attend are too busy texting each other to find out where the evening's big party is.  They could care less about who is on the stage pounding it out.  But for me, it's still about the bands and each year that  I attend, I find at least a handful of unknowns that I love.  So keep it tuned here for my reports from the road.

When and where is it? I have a son who lives in Austin and moved there for the music. He probably already knows about it, but if I mention it, I might sound really cool to him.

My old band played SXSW back in 2004. It was glorious to see so many people there. Also jammed with Dubtex and Strong Island Soundsystem during their sets at SXSW.

The last vocalist we had for our band is playing there solo this year. If you get a chance, I highly, HIGHLY recommend you check out Shina Rae at Ninety Proof Lounge on Saturday. I believe she goes on at 9PM. She's an excellent singer and makes great music. You can thank me later.

Ruben,

Great to hear back from you too. I try to catch the news when I get home from work in the morning if I'm not too tired. I'll try to catch you up to speed and keep it short. I got out of the Navy in 1997 after 7 years. Moved to Huntsville in 1998 to finish school, I've been married going on 7 years, no kids. Went back to school again. I work as a Registered Nurse at Memorial Hermann in the ER and at Menninger Psychiatric Clinic here in Houston. I've worked nights for so long; it's pretty much all I know. I keep telling myself I'm going to switch to days eventually... But for now I love what I do. Looks like you are doing well and have a family yourself. You still have roots in the music scene. We all need something to keep us grounded and balanced. I decided not to have kids and travel instead. However, I find myself working more than traveling. Well, it's been about 20 yrs since that Butthole Surfers/Flaming Lips concert at Numbers... my how time flies. Just a little older, wiser (hopefully), and a lot more mellow. I know you're busy with SXSW but write back when you can and catch me up on the life and times of Ruben. Take Care,
Sarah

According to Kristine Galvan, I'm the station junk man. That's because I pick up all the assignments that everyone else avoids. But hey, it's a living. I'm a non-award winning, non-journalist and so far I like it that way.
