Getting to the Austin City Limits music festival was a lot harder than I expected. To start the day off on the wrong note, I forgot half of the stuff that I needed at home which means my photographer had to drive me back there from the station to pick it up. He wasn't happy about it since he said to me the night before, "hey, don't forget your stuff like you did last time!" So I'm an idiot, what else is new?
We arrived in Austin at 1:30pm and tried to check in at our hotel. That would turn out to be the first big speed bump of the day. Our hotel was an old, rundown, stinky pit! No big deal, we decided to head to the festival to make our interview slots with Kaiser Chiefs and Manchester Orchestra.
Speed bump number two was trying to find a place to park. The road leading to Lot B was blocked by Austin police so we had to talk our way in. Then we thought we were lost because apparently the road to the ACL site is down a dirt road through the back end of Zilker Park. We parked, grabbed a ride on a golf cart and made the 1/4 mile journey to the media tent.
Speed bump number three happened when we tried to pick up our media credentials. Security freaked out because you are not supposed to be in the media tent without your media credentials. They kept asking, "but how did you get in here?" So when they finally pointed us in the direction of the main gate to get them, a fire started in a tour bus parked behind one of the main stages. The fire spread to two 18-wheelers and resulted in the park being shutdown for an hour. No one was allowed in or out. My interview with Manchester Orchestra was dead because I could not get to them and they could not get to me.
So we hung out at the media tent and resorted to ambushing artists as they came by to do radio interviews. This proved to be very fruitful since we were able to interview the Kaiser Chiefs, Troy from Queens of the Stone Age and Pete Yorn. Now if the staff at ACL would just cough up the video that we need of those band's performing, we could put it all together and post it. Gee, wouldn't that be nice?
