Now this has me at my wits end~! As I am sure you have all seen, Myanmar, in South East Asia, was hit by a devastating cyclone about a week ago. As usual the US steps up to the plate to aid in the relief efforts. This aid however, is not welcome by the Myanmar government. Their own government is limiting access to the aid workers. BLEEP? We are talking about over 60,000 people that have died and over 1,000,000 now homeless and that toll is sure to rise. THEIR OWN GOVERNMENT is limiting the access to those who are trying to lend a helping hand. I know we all talk about the problems that happen right here in our own country, why not focus on what is going on here instead of the other countries. I agree to a point, but on the other hand, we are compassionate as a nation and want to help when we see something as catastrophic as this. When you see children walking what is left of the streets of this city, bodies littering the streets, chaos all around, this is beyond a GOVERNMENT ISSUE~! Their government sits safely in their homes and offices as this outpour of aid is sent to them.  "Anything that might have a positive impact is being looked at and is being discussed. Everything within the law is being considered at this point in time." Ky Luu, director of the U.S. Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance said... I think at this point anything would be a positive impact. I bet if you were to get down there in the heart of the disaster and ask the people walking around, tripping over dead bodies, and all the aftermath of this cyclone, they would probably welcome any help they could get. Thousands of people die daily due to the lack of help allowed in.   I hear their government is saying "NO" to aid from the US, but what do you think the PEOPLE want? What do you think the PEOPLE need? They need help. A lot of help need help. What an insult to the people to now hear that they will allow ONE US plane to send supplies. This is where we actually see what our elected officials do for our country when hit with a disaster. It's a Humanitarian situation, this shouldn't be political. There is nothing wrong with accepting help when it is needed so badly. I'll be dammed if I would live in a country where my  government is so arrogant and headstrong that when they are hit with a disaster, the handful of them compared to the MILLION (or more) that are victims walking around in the chaos, sit there playing "eenie, meenie, miney, mo" with the aid that is trying to be sent their way... HOW DARE THEY PLAY WITH PEOPLES LIVES LIKE THAT.... Kind of makes all the BS going back and forth between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama obsolete, doesn't it.... Get out and vote people~!Body floats in floodwaters, photo received May 7

The United States refused a great deal of assistance that the rest of the world was offering us after Hurricane Katrina. Out of the $854 million in cash and oil offered by foreign countries (our allies), we only accept 4.7% of the total aid. The main reason for refusing it was also political.

It's unfortunate that politics has somehow become more significant than doing the right thing amongst fellow human beings...

Myanmar is not run by a government. It is run by a military. Their military leaders don't want outsiders, ESPECIALLY from this country, doing anything "helpful" in their country. I guess they see how efficiently we're "helping" the citizens of Iraq and would just rather take their chances on their own. I understand your need to help the needy. Look at this not as an outsider but as an insider of the military running that country. Sure, you're getting aid and assistance from this country after a natural disaster in 2008. Then, somewhere down the line you're asked to have U.S. military bases built in your country. And if you don't comply with that, this country will convince the U.N. and all the other powers that be that you have weapons of mass destruction and are a threat to everyone on the planet. Next, you will be invaded by this country ANYWAY and they will get exactly what they asked you for in the first place. All because you accepting aid from the United States after a natural disaster in 2008.

The military is their government. I don't care who runs that country, it's obvious as hell they are doing a piss poor job at it. Like I said in my blog, how dare they play with peoples lives like that. NO MILITARY in ANY country will EVER convince me that this is right or in ANY way acceptable. It's interesting to see how the war in IRAQ got thrown in the mix... By NO means am I saying we are a PERFECT Nation, but we wont just stand there and let our fellow Americans suffer the way these people have.

Personally, I don't care how horrible things are in other places. We've gotten ourselves into a mess, both at home and around the world, meddling, "helping" other countries at the expense of our own. We need to send our sympathies, and let our people who wish to go and help do so, but our gov't wallet should be CLOSED.
I'm sorry for the suffering of the people, but any populus who wants what we have-- democracy, freedom, etc-- has to do what WE did in the 1700s and FIGHT for it.

Like I said before, when did doing the right thing for a fellow human being become a political issue? Justbecause they don't have what we have, doesn't make it "ok." Maybe I am a bit more compassionate....

My name is Dawn. My blogs should say enough about me~! I have many blogs on myspace but decided to try a new forum. Some of them are funny, some of them serious. They're all just my little way of trying to make sense of this crazy thing we all call life. If I make new friends in the process, even better....
