PBMom's Blog

I had quickly heard on a talk show a few months back that one thing you have to watch out for, especially if you use bill pay.  Your credit card company will change the address to which your payment needs to be mailed.  If you wait until it is closer to the closing date, if you send it to the address you have in your bill pay, you might wind up being late on a payment because they've changed the address that the payment needs to go to and you don't change bill pay.  So I've watched out for it for a couple of months and sure enough, my Capital One card last month went to a "Dallas" address; this month a city I've never heard of "City of Industry, California."  Even your utility addresses can change PO boxes.  While it will eventually get where it needs to go to, consider it like interoffice mail -- it may take an extra period of time.  So now, before I pay bills, I go into each and every one of my bill pay addresses (including the ones I've got set up for automatic payment) to make sure the address hasn't changed.  Unfortunately with the way my bank is set up, you actually have to either delete the one you have, or create a new entry and then just don't put the old ones on display for you to choose from.

Sneaky, huh?

I had the same problem--if you can call it that--with Macys but the payment went through okay.

PBMom -- that exact thing happened to me with an MBNA account. The payment didn't clear until it was "late" and i was furious. interesting outcome though. 1st, i called mbna and they agreed to drop the late fee, but i was also told to contact chase bank because they have "guarantee" on-time payment. and chase ended up refunding my late payment too. yes... i ended up a few bucks better off but i considered that payment for all the aggrivation. but yes.. they are sneaky... and you have to watch them... and complain when there is a screw up.

Well, not to mention the late charge involved, but the companies will then bump your interest rate up.

Wow - really sneaky. I was charged a late fee years ago on a mortgage payment that I knew had enough time to clear my bank. I got a copy of the check and, sure enough, it had cleared several days before the late date. I had to send a copy of the canceled check to the mortgage company to prove the error THEY made. I wondered how many other people they had done this to, especially elderly people or others that didn't know to look into it themselves. I've had similar problems with the light company and my local water company. Both have sent me bills that were double the previous months' and when I called them to say it was impossible (we had been on vacation for two weeks out of that particular month and had everything turned off), they both said oh, sorry, we'll correct it. Again, my first thought is toward elderly people who would have just paid it.

People cheating people.
It appears our society have nothing better to do than to think up sneaky ways to scam one another on top of the big profit making.
Banks, insurance, food stores, you name it they're all at it. (even the post offices).
I have a weigh machine and sent a small package weighing just under 12oz. (international)
The post office weighed and charged for over 12 oz.
I politely asked if their weigh machine was accurate and the undignified response was, "What do you think, we test them and that's the charge.
Not satisfied, I asked for it to be reweighed on another machine.
Result, under 12oz and I saved myself $1.65
Jokingly, I said, "That's half a gallon of gas"
No response apart from a huff huff and mean looks from the staff.
I now wonder if my package will ever arrive at it's destination ??
This happened once before, a time ago and I didn't want to make waves but this time, I stood my ground.
Would other bloggers have done the same ???

I've heard about that, too, but have not come across the problem personally. All my accounts that I pay online have the option of choosing your own date. I don't utilize my bank's bill-pay feature.

Your RIGHT! Stay away from the Bank's bill-pay feature. Go directly to the official web site for whom the bill is from and you will not have a problem. Your payment will be posted that day (Monday - Friday) Watch out for Hoildays....
