The FOX station in Atlanta did a story about about a newly created Obama T-Shirt and a protest that came about after the T-shirt was seen publicly.

The creator of the T-shirt thought it resembled Obama. I  disagree and personally take offense to the characterization because a similar incident or comparison was made about me nearly 15 years ago. Did I think it was racist? Yes! But one can rise above these types of insulting and degrading images about Black men that come from people who think its funny or just an excercise in free speech.

Watch the story and decide for yourself.

Or, just let me know how you feel about the picture. Is it funny, foolish or free speech?

Must just be free speech. To say it's racist would be a statement from a racist. I don't recall anybody in an uproar about it when he was compared to GW Bush.

You make a good point Skyder. But you have to keep in mind what is implied here. Black men and women have been compared and likened to monkeys since the slave trade. So to make such a statement does nothing but reopen old wounds.

Consider this...if President Bush were put into the likeness of a Klan member...it would cause quite a stir I think. Why? Well, because the Klan, for most, is an old wound that many wish to see closed and sealed away forever. And to imply that Bush has any ties to the Klan would be horribly insulting to him I think.

Just like being compared to a monkey is just as insulting to Blacks. So the Bush/Obama comparison is kind of like apples to oranges.

What do you think?

It's free speech. A person has the right to do something like that if they want to. The rest of us reserve the right to disagree, think very poorly of that person, or not associate with them based on their expression of free speech.

Foe... Sound argument from your side as usual. The only problem I see with it is, that you are suggesting a double-standard. If Bush can be compared to Curious George, so then should anybody. I really think it's apples to apples (or should I say bananas to bananas) j/k
I understand that SOME have made the comparison of blacks to monkeys, but those old wounds can only be opened if you allow them to be. It is your right to not take offense, is it not? I just don't think "Racism" should be cried at this point. The guy who made the shirt made reference to the likeness of his ears and smile, not that blacks look like monkeys, and my point is that the same EXACT motive was used to compare Bush to a plethora of monkeys

Skyder - that's what I love about this site...the chance to get opinions and different points of view. I agree with you about the double standard. But it is hard for many to understand that point of view because of the past. We still have a long way to go before all the old wounds are healed.

Very good point.

Foe - I would say that I compare YOUR likeness to that of a helluva fisherman :) Nice catch in your pic.

I think it's all the above, AND RACIST.

Unfortunately, free speech covers ALL speech, even speech that is hate filled, racist, and ugly.

We don't restrict speech like that..we IGNORE it. To react to it either way only encourages it.

It should also be pondered that if I were to fly a Rebel flag does it mean I'm racist? Yes the shirt is a bit disturbing but this is the USA and what one considers racist another see's it as free speech. Like the old saying goes.."There's an excuse for ignorance but not stupidity".
