Texas Drought Information
Jul 31, 2008 | 5:19 PM PST
Category:
Weather
Despite the recent splash of rain from Hurricane Dolly, much of Texas is in the grip of a serious drought. Around here, the worst impact has been for areas northwest of Houston as you approach the Bryan-College Station area. Here are a couple of really good links to drought and fire danger maps provided by Texas A&M and the Texas Forest Service. Check it out

Saturday Hook Echo
Jun 23, 2008 | 1:41 PM PST
Category:
Weather
This was a scary sight on saturday evening as radar showed a pretty well-defined hook echo. We broke right into programming to alert everyone in Pearland and Friendswood about a possible tornado. As it turns out there were dozens of funnel cloud reports, but fortunately it never touched down. Here's what the storm looked like on radar.
Here's what the rotation looks like with velocity data. The green area right next to the red area is a clear indication of the rotation.

Tricky Jet Stream Pattern
Jun 16, 2008 | 9:54 PM PST
Category:
Weather
Ahh, this is always so much fun. This pattern sets up a few times a year, usually in the spring/early summer. We have a north to south orientation of the jet and a front across the Red River. Our weather will be hot and dry...that is unless a storm complex gets organized in Oklahoma or N.TX...then all bets are off. I had to hedge my forecast to account for the chance that a line of storms would "surprise" us...but, at least it won't be a real surprise, not for you because you're reading this!
Questions for Mayor White?

Weather
Houston mayor Bill White is our scheduled guest for the hurricane briefing today. Do you have any questions you'd like me to ask him?
Welcome to hurricane season 2008. Wow! The remamnts of Tropical Storm Alma seemed to have disipated over Central America yesterday, but the remaining storms reformed quickly near Belize and the NHC declared it Tropical Storm Arthur. So, the season's first storm forms on May 31st...
The weird thing is that this storm was already inland by the time the advisory came out. I've never really seen that before. What do you think?

NOAA hurricane forecast
May 23, 2008 | 7:21 AM PST

Weather
NOAA released their outlook for the 2008 hurricane season on Thursday morning. Here is the link to the details. http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2008/20080522_hurri

Do you put any stock in these forecasts? Do you think it's a waste of time or does it influence your preparations for hurricane season?
Wildfire Satellite Imagery
May 20, 2008 | 6:06 AM PST
Category:
Weather
They call it the Sunshine State, but not this week...Wildfires in the Everglades are blanketing South Florida in smoke. Residents are being forced to stay indoors because the air quality is horrible. I feel bad for the people who are there on vacation. Check out this visible satellite image from NOAA. You can see the smoke plume moving to the southwest, but the winds have shifted and over the last couple of days, that plume has moved right over Miami and Ft.Lauderdale.
Weather Animal nominations
May 14, 2008 | 7:38 AM PST

Weather
This morning we interviewed long-time KPRC meteorologist Doug Johnson about the passing of his friend Ron Stone. During the interview, he shared some video of a weather forecasting chicken that took over their studio years ago. So, I want to know which animal do you think we should hire as a forecaster? The dog has already been taken. I vote for a duckling because they're cute and small and easy to take care of. What do you think?
Burmese Cyclone
May 6, 2008 | 8:41 AM PST
Category:
Weather
Burma (Myanmar) is one of those places in the world that has disaster written all over it. Like Bangladesh, Burma is very low in elevation, has a high population and has citizens who live in substandard housing. This Cyclone (Hurricane) is going to go down in history as one of the worst in a century. It makes you appreciate all the technology and resources we have on the Gulf Coast to deal with storms like this.
What do you think of this disaster? Have you heard about the military dictatorship there interfering with foreign aid coming into the country?
Ozone Watch - First of many
Apr 29, 2008 | 6:24 AM PST
Category:
Weather
There is an Ozone watch level orange in effect today, Tuesday. We're getting into the "ozone season" which really kicks in during the summertime. Anytime we have lots of sunshine, light winds and warm weather we're bound to have high levels of ozone. So who cares? Well, people with sensitive lungs could be bothered by hogh ozone levels.
But wait, I thought ozone was good...doesn't it block UV rays? Yes...when it's 50,000 feet above the ground in the stratosphere. That's where the beneficial effects takes place, but it's not a good thing when we have to breathe it.
So, is anyone in your family sensitive to this? Anyone have asthma or emphysema?
Global Warming
Apr 24, 2008 | 7:44 AM PST
Category:
Weather
On Wednesday, NOAA released a report that doesn't look good for the planet. CO2 levels as well as levels of methane rose sharply again in 2007. While I consider myself a moderate in this debate, data like this certainly catches my attention. The article is short and to the point, so check it out. I really would like to hear what you think of the information. Are you concerned?
