I was just weighing the pros and cons of living close to or farther from Houston.  You can usually get a nice, big house for a decent price if you're willing to drive 25 miles to work each way.  Is it worth it?  Right now we live about 16 miles away from Fox26 and the drive isn't bad.  So my question for you is how far do you drive to get to work and what are the pros and cons to where you live?

I live in Pasadena, and put 62 miles a day roundtrip getting to and from work. During school, it's more like 72. I take the Beltway from 45 to 59, and since I don't have to be at work til 9 it's usually not too bad-as long as there's no wrecks at W Fuqua or Fondren it's about 30 minutes one way. A little far, I know, butthe pay, the bosses, and the staff is worth it.
Would I be willing to move closer? Not really. My entire family--both mine and my husbands, is within 5 miles, as is my hubs office and Scotti's school. Plus, we have Galveston within 50 miles..41 from my door to the Seawall, as a matter of fact. (I've lived off Westheimer before, and the 65 mile drive to Galley stunk.) There's Kemah, NASA, etc all within a 30 minute drive, so I think we'll stay where we are.
However, when my boss does retire? I will look for something a LOT more closer to home. :-)

I live 9 miles of open highway away from where I work. It is awesome. No traffic, for the most part, unless there is some incident, but I want for nothing, being this far north of downtown. I don't even like going downtown. My only gripe about my place... too close to the houses next door.

My dad commutes 100 miles (total) to work every day. We used to live within walking distance from his office... he said that, although the driving can sometimes take its toll, the country is definitely worth the drive(s). I personally live six minutes from where I work and it's great, haha.

I am 11.5 miles away from the studio. I like it. Driving to work at 4 also helps

A "nice big house" is fine and dandy but if you're too whipped to enjoy it from Friday night to Sunday night because of the stress of getting back and forth then what exactly have you gained? Besides, your close-in digs may be smaller but they are appreciating faster than anything else on the market. Quality over quantity every time.

I live in Deer Park and have always had to drive to downtown, Greenway or the Galleria to work. I don't mind the drive downtown too much - I can make it there in 20 minutes. I HATED the drive to the Galleria and back. Living this far out, it has always concerned me about flooding during my commute or (it hasn't happened in a while) the ice on the overpasses.

Like mik, most of my family lives out here, and the school district is one of the best. Before my grandson was born, I had considered moving to a loft downtown. Now, I wouldn't consider it at all.

Is it worth the drive to live here? Yes! We're on almost an acre, so I have a huge yard to get lost in and relax at the end of the day. I suppose we have the quality and the quantity out here!

I used to live less than half a mile from Fox 26 but there was a downside: I was always the first person they'd call in for breaking news because I was right around the corner.

So I learned my lesson and moved out to the 'burbs!

Hello, this is Mike Iscovitz, meteorologist for Fox 26 News. When I'm not at work, I'm spending time with my wife and beautiful twin girls. They are an incredible blessing. In addition to the twins we have to keep up with our somewhat obese but lovable Siamese mix Casper, and our scrappy, spunky Yorkie named Sammy. When I have free time (which I don't) I try to emulate two of my idols, Jimmy Page and Arnold Schwarzenegger by working out and trying to play my Gibson. Contact me at iscovitz@fox26.com
