Today on the morning news, it was reported that at risk students at some HISD schools are going to be given Blackberry's as an incentive to stay in school.

What are the requirements for this program, what GPA do they have to keep up? Behavior? What if they go over their minutes? What kind of responsibility is being taught to these students?

Unless the school system can think of a fool proof plan, in which these students will be using these electronic devices for all the right reasons--I think this is a horrible plan...Why do we constantly have to baby these students in order to get C's. That's all we ask, be average, show up to school, mind your own business... is that so hard...or will that only happen if we give them high-tech toys?

I recall hearing a while back about the Detroit school district (which doesn't perform well) wanted to get Ipods for all the students. What? This sounds similar to me. I would bet money that most school teachers who work their tails off can't afford a new Blackberry.

Cost of a blackberry: 324.99
Cost of a Verizon wireless plan: 59.99/month
Cost of a brand new 12th grade science book: 73.00

just a thought.

I agree.....why reward bad behaviour?

That's exactly it, there is no reason to, especially when we do not reward good behavior.

I graduated in the top 10 out of 334...we wanted to have our post high school plans announced as we walked across the stage.

Well, the majority of kids, who were not doing anything after high school felt that their privacy was being violated, and therefore none of us had our plans announced....

That's a bunch of you know what. What is wrong with these freaking "educators"??? What has our society become that we have to "bribe" kids to pass their MANDATORY classes??? It's no wonder they're lazy and could care less...they don't have to actually WORK for anything because they know they'll be passed anyway. Get a GOOD glimpse at our future, people, because it doesn't look pretty.
