Although I am a proponent of some of the issues that are fought by the ACLU, they never cease to amaze me when it comes time to fighting for things that should not and do not matter.

Let Indiana waive the $15 fee for the In God We Trust License plate...shouldn't Civil Liberties include the liberty to save money?

"The lawsuit filed in Marion Superior Court claims the state Bureau of Motor Vehicles gives preferential treatment to motorists wanting the plates, which also feature the American flag, because they don’t have to pay the $15 administrative fee that the agency collects on sales of most other Indiana specialty plates. "

Interesting case, Hala.

Motorists who buy the specialty plate still have to pay a $25 fee for the plate.

I doubt the ACLU will prevail in its case, based on a claim of preferential treatment. They might have a stronger case if they challenged the fee waiver on the basis that it's a gift of public funds not permitted under Indiana law.

As to the idea of the incentive attached to the specialty plate, I like it. We have specialty plates in Texas. You have to pay for them, though.

As to the ACLU, they'll always be out there pushing various constitutional causes. In the end, the case will cost the ACLU a large chunk of change, without any results.
