Oddsmakers rate Hillary Clinton's chances of grabbing the Democratic nomination as a longshot.

Regardless of how much damage the former first lady does to the political party she claims to love - it's unlikely she'll quit, particularly if she manages to win in Pennsylvania.

This insistence on fighting to the bitter end is exacting a painful political price of one of the New York Senator's most loyal lieutenants.

I'm talking about Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.

An early, vocal and tireless supporter of the presumptive favorite, Jackson Lee admits she was among those convinced the nomination would be wrapped up well before March.

Instead, Jackson Lee found herself campaining in her home state AGAINST the most formidable African-American presidential candidate in American history .

At the Democratic Senatorial convention she endured a barrage of boos and catcalls from folks who once counted themselves her loyal constituents.

She responded with courage and poise. But you just know it hurt and hurt bad.

80 percent of the delegates voted for Obama and many deeply resented the Congresswoman's refusal to reflect the clear preference of those she represents.

The hard feelings have spawned plenty of speculation that Jackson-Lee is now vulnerable to challenge.

Scuttlebutt has it two (and perhaps more) attractive candidates are actively organizing.

Which brings us back to Senator Clinton's desire to slug it out, as they say," 'til the last dog is dead."

The hard fact is Jackson-Lee may become collateral damage. What she desperately needs to do (and likely wants to do) is shed herself of obligation to Hillary and get to work for Team Obama (albeit a good bit late). The sooner, the better.

If past performance is any indication - Jackson Lee will be relentless. What better way to close wounds and dim memories of a high percentage play that went south.

I'm guessing the fallout would be even worse if Clinton completes an unlikely end-run with super delegates. Outrage in Jackson Lee's district (and across the country) would be swift, fierce and lasting.

No, at this point, the best possible political scenario for Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee is for her candidate to surrender.

One wonders if the Senator from New York cares that every additional day she answers the bell, it's Jackson Lee enduring the punches ?

Hillary care? Nah. But Jackson-Lee needs to put her superdelegate vote behind what her constituents want. At this point, it might be too late for her either way though.

Greg,

Shiela is not even on Hillary's mind, at this point.

Shiela thinks she can switch her vote to Barack once Hillary drops out and that, that will smooth things over with Democrats in her congressional district. It probably will.

But Jackson-Lee never belonged in Congress in the first place.

A candidate committed to effectively representing the interests of the district's constituents would be welcome.

Sheila Jackson Lee has been out of sync with her constituents for several years so this LATEST escapade only demonstrates how she truly regards those in her district. If there is no camera crew there Ms. Jackson-Lee is nowhere in sight.
Sox 26 did a story about a woman whose house was crumbling around her and how she got government assistance to help rebuild her roof. Sheila Jackson Lee's office helped and OF COURSE the Distinguished Lady from the 18th Congressional District was there to have footage shot of her and passionately say how much she cares for a person she wouldn't speak to on the street.
The only thing that stops ME from running against her is the fact that I've never held a political office. This year she is running un opposed and it's eating me up inside.
Sheila Jackson Lee (who grew up in Jamaica Queens, New York) is an insult to the two great members of congress who held that seat before her. Sorry Congresswoman Jordan & Congressman Leeland. I appologize for once having voted for the person who diminishes your legacies.

A member of Congress who does what their constituents want? What a curious thought!

Chassan is right - she (and many others) shouldn't be in Congress in the first place.

Dread, I'd vote for ya.

"Instead, Jackson Lee found herself campaining in her home state AGAINST the most formidable African-American presidential candidate in American history." (not saying much is it?)

The lady is one of the few Black liberals in the country that isn't backing the man simply because he's black. Character or character flaw. We report, you decide.

No one is questioning Jackson Lee's character, courage or loyalty. Fact is, she is a very tough position politically and frankly, she is the first one to admit it.

I know people who used to work in her office. BTW she has the HIGHEST staff turnover rate of ANY member of congress. I question her character.

I am a black who does not support Obama and never will! I did my home work on this man from Ill and never did anything significant for their state and his district, so how can I expect him to do anything worth anything forthe rest of the other 51 states. Sheila does a lot for this city and this state. True, she is an egotist, but, she loves Houston and the entire city not just the 18th district.

I will vote for her just as I did for Mickey, when people felt that he was doing nothing for the 18th district and they also didn't like Barbara Jordan until after she died, my granny voted for her and so did I when I was of age. That is the way of life. Not just in politics, but also in many professional arenas where you are dependent on the PUBLIC either liking you or hating you, ask Britney, Madonna, and any of our LOCAL "stars."

For as long as I can remember, all I've cared about is telling stories about Texans and what matters to them. These days that's pretty much all I do, so I guess I'm livin' the dream. Toss in 2 toddlers and a wife and my life is full to the brim. I'm greedy, I know there are great untold stories out there and I want them all. Help me do it.
