As I follow developments in the final weeks of the Texas Legislative session I am reminded of the six odd years I spent covering the making and unmaking of  Lone Star law.

One very passionate debate that sticks in my mind from the early and mid- 90's involved the eventual passage of whats come to be known as the CONCEALED CARRY LAW.

I remember clearly the horrifying scenarios painted on the floor of the Texas senate. Gun play on every corner, thousands of disputes settled with high caliber weapons instead of words, a blood bath.

Didn't happen. Not even close. Instead what rings far more true are the words of concealed carry propnents - licensed handgun owners are not the folks to be feared.

I don't like guns; neither does my husband. We don't own one. Criminals out there, that doesn't give you license to come to my house now--I have a golden retriever that will seriously hurt you (more likely, he would show them where the valuables are--wait I have none). I digress. I believe RESPONSIBLE people have the right to own guns. I think we need to get a few more laws on the books in each state that prevents people like the VT Tech shooter from obtaining guns (despite looking like a clean-cut guy). But with the concealed gun law--I think twice about become belligerent with people on the road. We haven't had many of those kinds of shootings lately. God forbid Houston ever becomes the new New Orleans post-Katrina, I might need to consider some sort of non-lethal weapon to protect us.

I am for guns, It doesn't make any difference if you have anything they just want to do harm and believe me if they would try to harm one of your children wouldn't you be able to kill them? If all they did would come in and take what they wanted that would be fine let them have it, But they are usually on drugs or alcohol and they are out of their minds.

For as long as I can remember, all I've cared about is telling stories about Texans and what matters to them. These days that's pretty much all I do, so I guess I'm livin' the dream. Toss in 2 toddlers and a wife and my life is full to the brim. I'm greedy, I know there are great untold stories out there and I want them all. Help me do it.
