They've spent a million dollars and they'd spend twenty times more if they had it. Hilda and Jeff Bowen are at war - a fight that's unlikely to end as long as they draw breath. There son Patrick's autism is certainly the enemy, but it's an enemy that's gathered allies.

Health insurance companies hiding behind cryptic definitions and enabled by a legion of shiny-shoed lobbyists continue to shirk the responsibility of paying for critical services. It appears they'd prefer to stockpile profits then help those on the spectrum reach their potential and their parents avoid bankruptcy.

Hilda Bowen looked me square in the eye and asked "Why is it people who get AIDS by sharing needles and people who choose to smoke and get lung cancer are fully covered and kids with autism are not ?"

Where is the justice ? Where are the Lawmakers who promised to provide it ?

If the Autism bills all die in this budget surplus year - there will be a reckoning.

Faces and names will be offered to attach the blame. That's my job.

Your right autistic children did nothing wrong and can't get insurance, but aids and cancer from smoking are self induced get covered, sounds a little backwards. I don't know where the justice is, but it sound crooked to me.

Greg: We thank you for wanting to tell our story, one similar to every special needs family. We didn't think ours was necessarily more compelling; I know others whose situations are much worse. I can only hope this story will be part of a catalyst for change that will help their lives, too.

It's true: We are paying for all sorts of consequences from life choices in our health insurance premiums. Autism is not a life choice. It's the only medical disease that has consequences in many bodily systems and is not covered by insurance. Taxpayers can choose an estimated 0.5% increase now or face billions of dollars when these kids turn into nontaxpaying adults, a burden like we've never seen before on a social system that is crumbling before us now.

School districts HAVE to invest in their children instead of their lawyers. Many kids who were in the autism unit in CISD have regressed as badly as Patrick. His story here is not unique.

We do have one shred of hope before this session ends. I found out late last night Senate Bill 419 comes up for a vote on Monday (it's on the "B" schedule) in the house. Everyone who is reading this, please pick up your phone and call your state house representative and Gov Perry (because the insurance lobby is hard at work pressuring him to veto the bill if it is passed) and tell them they need to make sure this gets to the floor and they support it.

Thank you again for showing yet another side of what all our families face. Peace & blessings to all.

Fox News - Houston and reporting "ace" Greg Groggan continues telling a story the "others" want to avoid. The public is finally seeing the real side of special education and the abuse these students and their families face.

If taxpayers could only listen to the tape recorded special education meeting I have attended the Abu Ghraib prison scandal would be mild in comparison!

With all the wonderful resources that this country and great state of Texas has, how is this happening? Maybe this country has lost its sense of compassion. Shame on our state legislators for holding up bills benefiting families with Autism. Whatever you want to say about Don Imus, he single handedly moved an important Autism bill through Congress. We need a similar lightening rod (without the negative publicity) in Texas. Greg, by all means, hold these politicians feet to the fire and name names. Go get em.

What bothers me is that millions of dollars are sent to third world countries all over the world for the people there to make their lives better. How is this right when we have our special needs children surviving in educational third world conditions with teachers that are overwhelmed due to lack of training, paras that also have second class training and our children are abused by the "professionals" we entrust them to. Parents of "regular children" see our kids as a drain on the budget of our schools and make few attempts to see the potential in our children that could be realized if the millions sent overseas were invested in our children. How can our government justify allowing insurance companies not to "cover" this problem when as already stated people that participate in self injurious activities have full coverage to help them get better or be more comfortable and sometimes at NO COST to them when families around the country are bankrupting themselves to take care of the children that did not ask to be autistic.

Again, thanks to Channel 26 and Greg Groogan for continuing their efforts to expose the efforts of the school districts to sabatoge parents as they work toward their children's best interest.

Thank you Greg Groogan for telling this family's story. If insurance would cover the costs of providing the proper therapy to young children with autism, the recovery rate of 50%is remarkable where these kids are almost indistinguishable from their peers. They are also able to be a part of regular education with minimal special education services.
For the first time this legislative session I have seen representatives take action to help children with special needs, including some very important bills on autism. Texas needs to get with the program and start helping the kids who are going to cost this state a lot of money as adults unless we start doing what is right NOW!

For as long as I can remember, all I've cared about is telling stories about Texans and what matters to them. These days that's pretty much all I do, so I guess I'm livin' the dream. Toss in 2 toddlers and a wife and my life is full to the brim. I'm greedy, I know there are great untold stories out there and I want them all. Help me do it.
