We are a fortunate country. Many of us can scrape together three or four grand each summer to provide a special experience for those we treasure - our children.

I recently profiled a pair of talented Houston area teens who've been accepted at Idol CAMP in Westfield, Mass.

Neither of their widowed Moms is wealthy, but what they lack in means, they more than make up for with love.

Both see the Idol Camp experience in the healthiest possible way. An opprtunity to polish talent, expand personal skills,
meet kids from all over the country and gain a good bit more insight into what it takes to be a professional entertainer.

Neither has any illusions that attendance will offer their beloved daughters any "shortcut" to the Hollywood Idol spotlight.

They just want them to learn ...and have fun doing it.

So lets hear it - Idol Camp - Waste of Cash or incredible opportunity ?

I read stories like this, and I am unsure what to think. On one hand, I agree with children pursuing their talents, their dreams, hopes, likes, etc. On the other hand, the children of widowed mothers face a lot more hardships in life that need to be taken care of.

It's great to see a child happy with what they are doing, but down the road, when many are facing academic problems, was this Idol Camp really such a good idea...?

Hard lessons come with the loss of a parent. They come if the child is 12 or 41; if the parent is 40 or 80. Life is finite. Its pinnacle moments are few. What we most mourn at death is life's missed opportunities.

These children will never regret having gone to Idol Camp and their mothers will never regret having given them the opportunity.

My dear friend Greg, your words bring such truths to life. Spend money like you can always make more. Spend time like you can't.

A WASTE OF THE PARENTS MONEY ! THEIR DREAMS ARE FRAGILE LIKE THEIR EGOS . IF THEY FAIL , THEN WHAT ? THERE ARE OTHER WAYS TO BECOME A FAMOUS SINGER .

Although Idol Camp may be a good investment for the campers, it will DEFINITELY be a good (financial) investment for American Idol. I personally don't think it takes spending hundreds of dollars to be a great singer. You either have it or you don't and we all can't be Kelly, Reuben, Carrie, etc. no matter how many vocal lessons we take. If a person can afford to go, go; but keep an open mind to the fact that being an above average singer may not be in the makings for you. You may be above average at doing something entirely different.

"Spend money like you can always make more. Spend time like you can't."

I can agree with the second part of that statement. But one needs to be realistic......

It also depends if the Children that are going that make or they fail! It can be a useful(Finacial) way! But if the child is not that great then they wont be accpeted!! Thats if your child wants to try something different!!

If I had the cash & truly believed my child had potential, I'd definitely send them to Idol Camp!

However, if my child couldn't stay on tune, I'd want to steer them in another direction, to help "protect them".

For as long as I can remember, all I've cared about is telling stories about Texans and what matters to them. These days that's pretty much all I do, so I guess I'm livin' the dream. Toss in 2 toddlers and a wife and my life is full to the brim. I'm greedy, I know there are great untold stories out there and I want them all. Help me do it.
