You guys might not know this, but August is a big month for the gulf coast regional blood center. Every August they have a huge drive and if you make a donation, you get a coupon for a FREE pint of Blue Bell Ice Cream. I've been donating several times a year since I was a young (and incredibly handsome) Marine and have to tell you that each donation you make can save the lives of three people. Each donation includes a cholesterol check. Don't wait for some huge emergency. Give blood. They always need it, and if you give at the Blood Center near Reliant Stadium (on La Concha) tell them "Jesse" sent you. :-)
At the end of world war one President Woodrow Wilson convinced congress that a day to remember all of the brave men who laid down their lives in the most costly war to date (in human terms and at the time it was) should not be forgotten. Armistice day was set aside so that we could solemnly observe those who went off to war and either never returned or returned horizontially draped in old glory.
After enough time passed Armistice day was broadened to include those who died in all of America's wars and the name was changed to Memorial day. I have friends who are combat veterans. When they speak of the action they saw they have a strange reverence for the men against whom they fought. This is not to say that they love them by any means but they came to respect an enemy whose lfriend's lives they had taken and who could have easily taken theirs.
They're part of a brotherhood that those of us who've never sighted in on a breathing human being can never know. I think of Memorial day as a day when everyone who has ever lost a son/brother/husband (and as of late daughter/sister/wife) to war should remember those they love and recognize their sacrifice.
What I find odious are those who have no reverence for the fallen, who see this observance as nothing more than a day off work and an excuse to have a barbeque. We dishonor generations of people who died for that which they fought whenever we do this. To every man and woman who has ever worn his country's uniform and died wearing it and their families, know that in Houston, Texas a Marine who's never seen combat thanks you for your sacrifice in his thoughts and prayers.

Haley Berry is pregnant! Britney Spears is slowly going nuts and lost custody of her sons! Katherine Heigel is getting married! Brangelina is adopting a lovable koala! Lindsay Lohan seen placing a hickey on the neck of a large brotha with dreadlocks!
I....DON'T....CARE! Okay I have to admit if Lindsay Lohan was tryin to give me a hickey I wouldn't have an issue with that, but the rest of that garbage annoys me. When did we as a society become so celebrity obsessed that ANYTHING related to someone rich & or famous leads off a news cast?
I mean no disrespect to those who put shows like Access Hollyweird, the Outsider or the DMZ (Dirty Mile Zone) but enough already. Stories about celebs seem to take up more air time than REAL news. Most Americans can't tell you who their congressman is, but can tell you at least three facts about Britney Spears or the name of the the rehab center where Lohan held up.
More people participate in American Idol voting than in most recent American elections. Am I the only one who finds that odious? If you guys have any thoughts I'll be wrapped in a blanket with Lindsay Lohan.

Cholesterol...

I exercise at least 3 times a week (usually four), eat fruit for breakfast, a salad for lunch and usually something sensible for dinner. I rarely eat red meat and seriously avoid fried food. Yesterday I had a physical and was told that my cholesterol was ridiculously high. I was told to eat more veggies and fruit and try to get some exercise (by a doctor who was my height and outweighed my by an easy 120 pounds) and that should lower my cholesterol. My mother has high cholesterol and my grandfather had it as well.
Am I essentially doomed?

Earlier this ween a contractor remodeling a bathroom in a friend's house found $125,000 dollars in depression era script said to be worth nearly half a million. The contractor elected to keep it. The owner of the house offered a 10% finders fee. The contractor's stance? I found it, it's mine.
The whole thing is being decided by a judge at present. In YOUR humble opinions who should keep it? I'm sorry. I'm of the opinion that if it's in YOUR house it's YOUR property. By the contractor's logic if I'm visiting her house and she can't find the keys to her car and I DO while visiting I can drive off in her car and that my friends is Bull$h:t. But that's just MY opinion. What do YOU think?

In east many east Asian cultures red is considered a "lucky" color and being surrounded by it brings the wearer good fortune. Earlier this week when Pattie was away from the State and Local headlines desk and was back at anchor girlfriend was workin' a "lucky red" ensemble that was just great. Keep up the great work girl! With your cutasian self.
(yes people I know Pattie is happily married so don't bother pointing it out...I'm just saying she looked great.)

I'm back! To quote L.L. Cool J. : "Don't call it a comeback! I've been here for years!" Sorry I don't write that much anymore but my mac has trouble getting onto the fox site. I'm back with a certain school district subbing but in my spare time I'm doing video production (DART) so that I can eventually move on to my future behind a camera.
My mission to get the experience needed to convice a certain station manager that I can operate a Sony Betacam in the field for one of his reporters...or get a film in an indie film fest. I'll post and reply to your post and I appologize for my absence. Let's rock and roll people. Pattie...you're still cuddley-sexy-cute!
Planet Anime...rest in peace.

In the early 90's a Vietnamese-american college student who enjoyed watching Japanese animation with his friends got the brilliant idea to market (i.e. sell and rent) anime and anime related products in the Houston area. Not ONLY was he the first in Houston to do it, he was the first person in AMERICA to open an Anime store in the Rice villiage.
Planet Anime was the only place where you could find titles that blockbuster video and the other video outlets had never heard of. You could also buy model kits and action figures that were available only in Japan previously. The enterprising college student sold the business a few years ago and the new owners changed the name to Anime Avalon. After taking the business over for a few years they have failed where the original proprietor succeded wildly. Planet Anime/Anime Avalon is closing it's doors and Houston's anime community is now a poorer place because of it. I'll miss the ability to rent titles that most fair weather anime fans have never heard of.
I'll miss people asking me "Man where have YOU been?" when I don't go in for a couple of weeks. I'll miss those who made me and other anime geeks come out of the closet at a time when we were confined to anime clubs on college campuses. Thank you planet Anime. Pattie...don't you think this would make a great story?
Kappa Alpha Incorporated

I dont' like to kick sleeping dogs, but the recent blog about cofederate imagery on the University of Texas Campus made me think of something from a zillion years ago when I was at the University of Houston and flirting with a cute Asian Radio and Television major named Pattie Sheih... I wonder what ever happened to her. (just kidding Pattie and I weren't there at the same time) Anyway there existed a fraternity on my campus called the Kappa Alpha order.
This fraternity was (and is) all white and includes NO minority membership. They celebrate the Antebellum south and (allegedly) every year do something called the "Southern Belle ball" where it's members dress up in confederate uniforms while being served by black waitstaff in white dinner jackets. I don't know if it's true or NOT but I find it interesting.
The reason I bring this up is because Kappa Alpha is the Fraternity that my alama matter allows to anchor a group called the "Frontiersmen". The Frontiersmen are present at all functions at the University of Houston (Football games) etc and are the guys who run up and down the field with a huge UH flag whenever the team scores. It is possible to become a Frontiersman and NOT be a member of the Kappa Alpha Order BUT the Kappa Alphas essentially run it. Should a group that doesn't have a single minority member and may very well be closet racist be allowed to have such a prominent role on a state college campus? What do YOU think?

We can all agree that while our nation is far from perfect it's still a pretty great place to be if we're compared to the rest of the world. I'm quick to say that I love my country but hate my government. I'm curious. What do YOU guys think is the ONE issue that America MUST face if we as a nation will ever get anywhere in the future? Give me your thoughts.

Political Business as Usual...

If we're a nation of laws, why don't any of them seem to apply to our politicians? Every year our politicians become wealthy men and women while betraying our collective trust. People who we elect who claim to be looking out for our interest routinely take huge checks from special interest groups in the guise of "contributing" to their campaigns or "giving" to their favorite charities.
Will there ever be campaign finance reform? Sure and guys who are sent to prison if released will promise to be good and won't commit future crimes. It doesn't matter which political party the person belongs to. Power corrupts quite a few of our politicians and the more of it they get the more they forget YOU the voter.
The president recently pardoned Scooter Libby for doing something that anyone with half a brain KNOWS that he and Rove knew of when it happened. The only thing Bush did differently? Pardoning the guy a year before he left office. Everyone else usually has the sense to wait until the night before they give up the office. It's justified by saying that all do it, but does that make it right?

Can the blogger's picnic actually happen? Has a time and place been decided? Will a certain handsome, charismatic, brilliant station manager (whose employees contstantly gush about his incredible leadership) get the powers that be at Pizza Hut to give us some pizza in exchange for some Pizza Hut banners being placed strategicly at the event (prime product placement) or will we the bloggers do kind of a pot luck thing? I'm flexible. Opinions people.
