At the end of world war one President Woodrow Wilson convinced congress that a day to remember all of the brave men who laid down their lives in the most costly war to date (in human terms and at the time it was) should not be forgotten. Armistice day was set aside so that we could solemnly observe those who went off to war and either never returned or returned horizontially draped in old glory.

After enough time passed Armistice day was broadened to include those who died in all of America's wars and the name was changed to Memorial day. I have friends who are combat veterans. When they speak of the action they saw they have a strange reverence for the men against whom they fought.  This is not to say that they love them by any means but they came to respect an enemy whose lfriend's lives they had taken and who could have easily taken theirs.

They're part of a brotherhood that those of  us who've never sighted in on a breathing human being can never know. I think of Memorial day as a day when everyone who has ever lost a son/brother/husband  (and as of late daughter/sister/wife) to war should remember those they love and recognize their sacrifice.

What I find odious are those who have no reverence for the fallen, who see this observance as nothing more than a day off work and an excuse to have a barbeque. We dishonor generations of people who died for that which they fought whenever we do this.  To every man and woman who has ever worn his country's uniform and died wearing it and their families, know that in Houston, Texas a Marine who's never seen combat thanks you for your sacrifice in his thoughts and prayers.

Well said Dread. Fact is, the Veterans are the only organization that I donate to. I feel very passionately about our men and women in uniform, and for their sacrifices so that I may enjoy the freedoms and luxuries of this country.
I applaud you for making this very overdue summation.
It is with hand over heart, and head held high, that I humbly thank you, the service men & women of America, land of the FREE!!!

Dread, well put, as always. Again I say, whether or not you agree with the military action, everyone wants our sons and daughters home safely! I could not match their sacrifice. I have met some wonderful servicemen and woman, as well as their families. And I do thank them!

I was lucky enough to have served in peace time. I have the utmost respect for combat veterans particularly those who paid the ultimate price for their patriotism.

And this daughter of a Navy man, her husband whose father was a Navy man, and their child, we could never say the right words that would come close to your loss. We should be grateful every day and not just one day a year.

Dread, even those who serve during peace time sacrifice. I appreciate all that you and all others have done.

My son-in-law received his orders for Iraq this past month. He could have sat out on a medical profile. He chose to do everything he could to correct it, in order to be with his unit in Iraq. He will be leaving in a few days to start the more intensive training he needs before his deployment.

Luckily he's still here to celebrate his daughter's fifth birthday today, but he will miss out on so much of his children's lives.
I give thanks to him, and all other men and women who choose to serve in the armed forces.

My prayers will be with all those who have lost their lives in defense of our country. They truly did pay the ultimate price for us.

I love movies, football (go Texans!) cooking, reading, anime and getting my "news Jones" on. I read Associated Press, Reuters, UPI and the BBC when I get a chance and have been watching Fox news since Fran Fawcett (Farah's sister) was an anchor. I love the morning news and Pattie is just too cuddly-sexy-cute not to be my favorite.
