I am and have been a member of the Sacred Heart Co-Cathederal for some time. When it was first announced that they were planning a new cathederal I balked at the idea as I thought the old cathederal suited our needs. It was neither too big nor too small. It had a very intimate feel about it.

The archdiocese thought differently and built a new cathederal. Yesterday was the first service I attended in the new Cathederal.  The whole placed seemed to have the charm of a brightly lit  marble tomb with a resonating echo, but I guess that will take some getting used to. Because of all the media attention there were scores of visitors and dignitaries. There were people from other parts of the city, visitors from out of town and hardly a seat to be had.  The place was packed with wall to wall lookie-lous and I hate to admit this, but I felt a little uncomfortable.

TV cameras were there as was Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee who in essence told a group of our ushers that despite the priests wanting the volunteers who had assisted him and the Cardinal to sit in a certain place that SHE and her entourage were taking their seats because "I'm a congress-woman."  I'm glad the  native New Yorker decided that the time that we pray each Sunday was worthy of a politically motivated photo-op.

Many of the visitors were giving me (and the ropes growing from my head) odd looks as if to say "What are YOU doing here." I don't speak for the archdiocese OR the members of Sacred Heart when I say that I'll be glad when the "curiosity" factor subsides and all returns to normal.  I go to church for a sense of communion and peace and  yesterday I got neither.

Dread: When we got married, there were very strict rules about photography and videography. There were designated spots they could be. No flash photography was allowed during the ceremony by anyone because it drew away from the sacredness of the service. Father Troy Gateley was very, very strict about these rules. Yep, your pastor married us at St. John Vianney. We saw him several years later and he didn't remember us, but his name is on our marriage certificate. I find it surprising that this was allowed, unless his feelings about Mass have changed over the years, which I suspect not, so I wonder if this is was from the Cardinal. Interesting info about Father Troy--He told us in marriage prep that he used to be Baptist and was engaged to be married when he received the calling to become a Catholic priest. His sister is Church of Christ. He apparently has a very colorful family. I thought he was great. He was a great priest and a great mentor.

I've been to the Sacred Heart original parish and it is wonderful. Several Confirmations and sadly, a death. Both were enriching experiences in different ways. Always enjoyed mass there over the course of years. The new Co-Cathedral is an awesome experience. One in which, it is hard to put into words. I know that God's presence resonates all around us. I'm not sure any of you have ever attended mass at other parishes, or other countries or states. If so, you will know the feeling that I'm describing. When you enter into God's holy place, all things transcend onto another level. Sometimes we have to brush back those negatives energies of others, remember that we are in the house of God and he is glad we came to worship Him.. Really hope that we can embrace the new Co-Cathedral and our Cardinal. Both of these are historical moments for us here in the Galveston-Houston archdiocese. Peace be with both of you.

I love movies, football (go Texans!) cooking, reading, anime and getting my "news Jones" on. I read Associated Press, Reuters, UPI and the BBC when I get a chance and have been watching Fox news since Fran Fawcett (Farah's sister) was an anchor. I love the morning news and Pattie is just too cuddly-sexy-cute not to be my favorite.
