Dread-Head's Blog

by Dread-Head from Houston Texas BABY!

Last Post 2 days, 20 hours Ago

I exercise at least 3 times a week (usually four), eat fruit for breakfast, a salad for lunch and usually something sensible for dinner. I rarely eat red meat and seriously avoid fried food. Yesterday I had a physical and was told that my cholesterol was ridiculously high. I was told to eat more veggies and fruit and try to get some exercise (by a doctor who was my height and outweighed my by an easy 120 pounds) and that should lower my cholesterol. My mother has high cholesterol and my grandfather had it as well.

        Am I essentially doomed?

No........you can eat all the right things and do all the right things but if you are pre-disposed to high cholesteral it won't help very much. Like it or not, you are heading to the drug store for a statin drug such as Lipitor.
My dad did the same thing you did and he was stunned that his numbers were so high in spite of his healthy regiment, so he went on Lipitor and it literally cut his number in half in 30 days!!!

I remember seeing a story about these small towns in Italy where the people routinely have cholesterol levels of 300+ and no one gets heart disease. I think in the decades to come we will learn that it is all much more complicated than simply eating broccoli and running all day.

hi dread... like lanny said, if high cholesteral runs in your family it's no surprise you have it too. but if the doc said it was "ridiculously" high, some docs would have recommended medications. perhaps he wants to see if you can fix the problem yourself, unless you told him what you told us. second opinion? maybe... but continue to take care of yourself!

I think that high cholesterol is hereditary just like eye/hair color; as well as a predisposition to heart disease. (Don't mean I think you HAVE to be born with it to get it, though.) I don't think you're doomed as long as your blood pressure and weight stay good.
I have very little faith in cholesterol drugs. My poor dad was on them in addition to blood pressure medicine, and that started a vicious merry go round that ended up with him developing diabetes. Then the diabetes drug set off a whole other round of interactions...finally he said forget this, went off ALL medications (which ended up with his doctor "firing" him as a patient) and began a more vigilant lifestyle--exercise every day, basically became a vegetarian (this is a bonafide redneck country boy I'm talking about!) then lo and behold..all his counts--blood sugar, pressure, cholesterol came down.
Not saying this would work for everyone, but it did for him, and eventually he found a doctor that takes a more holistic approach to treating his diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol issues.

I had high cholesterol in 7/06 and have since stopped eating red meat. I take 2400 mg of fish oil caps daily and also have lowered my sodium intake. My cholesterol went from 283 to 204. Cinnamon also lowers cholesterol and you can buy capsules, if you don't like it as a spice. You're not doomed! Exercising is also a good way to lower it and since you already don't eat that much red meat, you should be okay. Statins have several side effects and just from reading your blogs, I think they would interfere with your lifestyle: muscle weakness, fatigue, blurred vision, to name a few. Hang in there and keep us posted!

I agree with you. It seems so strange that someone like you that does everything right has such high numbers and someone like myself that is at least 80 - 90lbs over weight have a number like 140. I don't get it. I am thankful but I dont get it.
By the way Dread were you in a Krogers on Polk St. in the past month. I saw a guy that looked just like you and I wanted to approach him but changed my mind.

There are better choices that just going straight for the drugs pharmaceutical companies put out.

Also, you should go to this site and read about the statin drugs. It is predicted that 50% of Americans will be on statin-type drugs when they don't need to be. Alternative medicine doctors believe that 5% of people whose cholesterol is over 350 because of an inherited problem are all that may really benefit. Remember that taking something like Lipitor will have other consequences within your body. I strongly urge you to try other things before buying into the hype. Lanny's father had great successful, but his doctor probably didn't tell him that statin drugs cause deficiencies in other areas and people on these should be typing CoQ10 enzyme supplements.

Also this site:

And in either, you can just type cholesterol and do a search on the site and read about alternatives you can try.

Also, taking fish oil on a regular basis is a good thing. But you can't trust what is sold in our stores because there is no regulation. I was at a conference by Dr. Les Simpson, formerly of the WHO, who said he tested 10 evening primose oil products off the shelf and only 2 of them had what it said it had in the bottle. Here are links to two sites that sell quality fish oil products (I have no stake in these companies and don't get residuals for referrals either):

The Nordic Naturals products are

continuation of post:

The Nordic Naturals products are different in that when you take them, they don't make you burp fish oil all day. Garlic also helps. These two products also help people with high blood pressure.

Also, did you make sure you were fasting for 12 hours before you had your blood work done?

I would follow some of the suggestions from these sites (especially Dr. Weil's site) and then in 6 months have a 12-hour fasting (meaning nothing to eat) cholesterol level done again (if you want your cholesterol tested for free, go ahead and fast, and then go give blood--the blood bank will test your blood for cholesterol AND you've done a good thing, too.

Things you can do to lower your cholesterol:

Add cold press flak seed oil to your daily diet. It's a liquid in bottle that's available at Whole Foods. Put a spoonful of the oil once a day in any food you eat. It will help lower your bad cholesterol reading by 5-10 percent.

Limit your daily intake of food items with cholesterol.

Engage in intensive aerobic workouts 5 times a week, with each workout lasting an hour.

Eat oatmeal for breakfast and go to the store and buy Promise Active Supershots. You can find them by the yogurt. Drink one a day. I have had the hub on this stuff for about 6 months now and his cholesterol dropped quite a bit.

I love movies, football (go Texans!) cooking, reading, anime and getting my "news Jones" on. I read Associated Press, Reuters, UPI and the BBC when I get a chance and have been watching Fox news since Fran Fawcett (Farah's sister) was an anchor. I love the morning news and Pattie is just too cuddly-sexy-cute not to be my favorite.
