...HI ALL!!!!

...first of all...I am a sports photographer by choice...and...I am beginning to realize why I choose to be a sports photographer...

...about a month ago...I was sent to cover a little girl's 5th birthday party...on my drive to the location...I actually thought to myself...SO!?!?!?...the Rockets were about to make the playoffs...Rice and the University of Houston were on their way great baseball seasons...and I'm on my way to cover a birthday party...well...the little girl is known as Princess Courtney...doctors say she should not have seen her second birthday...Courtney's mom and grandmother do not see her as a burden...but...a blessing...Courtney has a disease that has robbed her of all movement except for facial expressions that let you know she loves life!!!!...her mom came up with a "dance" that Courtney could do by pushing Princess C around in her carriage...

...I left AFTER leaving a donation...and BEFORE anyone caught me tearing up....where is the sport in that?!?!?

...before Mother's Day...the Rockets out of the playoffs...and the Texans starting another summer...Damali and I met a shy kid by the name of Tony...Tony was around 9ish-10ish...kind of quiet but strong willed with Damali and me letting us know he was a BIG boy...after the interview...he asked for paper and crayons...and...went straight to drawing...when he was finished with his secret project...he went to his foster mom...and showed/gave her the first Mother's Day card she had received this year...in the card...he had a drawing of her family...with an extra little boy...himself....

...his foster mother teared up...Damali teared up...I pretended to have camera problems so no one would see the lump in my throat...where's the sport in that?!?!?!

...this Sunday...Rice and UH advancing towards the Super Regionals in college baseball...I met the Johnson family...at a "Cancer Day" event...I went to interview Stephanie Johnson...a healthy looking young woman...and asked her what was wrong with her husband...as her voice trembled a little...she told me SHE had her stomach removed...and...that now the cancer was spreading...I felt horrible...until her husband...Greg...stepped in...and...said he had started a support group for other spouses who were dealing with cancer...her two boys...in a show of unity...BOTH had their heads shaved because Stephanie lost her's to chemo...her cute little daughter was a camera hog...but...in a good way!!!!...Greg has a organized a triathalon planned for September that Stephanie plans on participating in...I'm not sure...but...I think we showed the event that night...but...didn't get into the Johnson's story...

...as I left them...choked up...of course...I'm sure they forgot about me...and...the reason they were there....and...got back to being a family...that just happens to be in a fight with cancer...where is the sport in that!?!?!?

...I have NO problem asking a millionaire how he could have missed the three pointer to sent the game into overtime at the buzzer...or how he could strike out with bases loaded...putting the game over in the "L" column...BUT...asking people how they survive with smiles on their faces...when serious roadblocks are place in their paths...THAT is the hardest thing to do...where is the sport in that!?!?!?

...I am glad I met Courtney...and her mom and grandmother...Tony...and his foster mother...Stephanie and her wonderful family...and I hope they stay in the "WIN" column...after all...I am a sports photographer by choice...I don't think I can get through another story like any of theirs...where is the sport in that!?!?!?

...I've noticed that sometimes...when talking about a certain player...most people drop the "s" from the name of the team...for example...

...Miguel Tejada...Houston Astro...

...is that right!?!?!?...I mean...not for nothing...but...I thought the name of the team was...the Houston AstroS...or the Houston RocketS...or the Houston TexanS...or Houston AeroS...not that one of the players was an Aero...and...together they were the Aeros...

...I mean...we don't say...the red car is my Lotu....Mike Barajas is my favorite Baraja...I only eat at that particular Hooter...do we?!?!?

...I always thought it was supposed to be...Rafer Alston is my favorite Rockets player...point guard...whatever...

...I wasn't trying to bust on anyone...I'm just trying to see if there is a correct way of saying things...I mean...if Roger Clemens cloned himself...then...one of them would be the Rocket and together they would be the Rockets...but...does it work the other way around!?!??!

...being the biggest KISS and Van Halen fan in the building...come on...there is a connection...some say Gene Simmons discovered Van Halen...isn't easy...but I realized my title was in jeopardy when...

...recently...senior sports producer extraordinaire...or...as I like to call him...chief engineer of the Enterprise...Scotty...on a trip to Best Buy or Fry's...or something like that...said he noticed a box titled...KISSOLOGY 3...which I've had since Christmas...a four disc set...with a bonus dvd...totaling more than nine hours of KISS!!!!!...and this was the THIRD set of the collection...

...well...I joked that it wasn't really fair to say it was nine hours of KISS because in this set...DUECE was in there about nine times!!!!....well...only five...but I'm told I exaggerate!!!!

...anyway...one day...actually...this morning...I decided to watch ALL NINE HOURS!!!!

...it was AWESOME!!!!...like back to back concerts!!!!...the UNPLUGGED portion...not sure why...was my favorite...except they didn't do...CALLING DOCTOR LOVE...but all in all...I wanted the best...and...I got the best...the hottest band in the world...KISS!!!!!

...oops...gotta go...don't want to be late for work...

...I started watching the past midnight game show channel offerings...and started to realize that...2K8 "game shows" got NOTHING on the games shows of the 70's!!!!!

...sure...you can go for the cool million now...but...back then...it was cool without the million...

...people back then would do or say just about anything for a BENNY!!!!!

...right now...it's a toss up between Match Game '75...or THE GONG SHOW!!!

...Gene Rayburn...Brett Sommers...Richard Dawson and Charles Nelson Riley...VS...Chuck Barris...Jaye P Morgan...the Unknown Comic...and Gene, Gene the Dancing Machine...

...sure they were silly...sure there was alcohol flowing...but I find myself staying awake just to remember how funny and edgy they really were...

...people still remember Gene Gene dancing to "Jumpin' at the Woodside"...who remembers the first winner of Dancing with the Stars!?!?!

...with Survivor...Big Brother...Deal or No Deal...etc...you don't get the excitement of "No Whammies"...or...watching the top of the $25,000 pyramid light up....if you think today's game shows are better...you can kiss my BLANK...cue the Match Game music...

...much like the disgruntled school kid that picks up his ball and leaves the field...just because he is losing...the frenzied Aisle 2 went flatline...pretty much last week...but...the time of death...according to HTown...was on Friday...they didn't even come out for the fourth quarter!!!!!

...last week...McFly threw Kenny Jr. Jr. under the school bus...in a scramble to fill time...while McFly stayed in the customer NONservice booth...KJJ grabbed a North Shore official and asked him to comment on the victory...LIVE...as the game was STILL being played behind them...and the guy courteously answered..."I don't like to talk about a victory...BEFORE... the end of the game!"

...this week...the only frenzy in Aisle 2 was the way HTown left Berry Stadium...much like Aisle 2's commitment to items on the shelf...and missed an awesome second half comeback by Waller to tie the game...Dayton came back to win the game...but...not before the kids on the field gave the fans in the stands...and US...their money's worth...and more!!!!

...with the kids STILL leaving everything they've got on the field...how can you NOT be frenzied?!?!?...how can you just GIVE UP!?!?!?

...as Bo Levi Mitchell once said..."it's SIXTEEN games!"...not thirteen...too bad the blue light special on Aisle 2 has been turned off...AGAIN!!!!

...I was going to start this blog with..."it was twenty years ago...today"...but that seemed too easy...

...so...instead...let's just start with...back in 1987...what probably should have been my senior year in college...or...my fourth year as a freshman...1987...you know...Ronald Reagan...thirtysomething...$25,000 Pyramid was alot of money game show...1987...Atari had a game console...the XE...Mattie and Dave hadn't "jump the shark" yet...1987...when I was at a record store...yes...I said RECORD...trying to decide between...Rick Astley...not really...PussieGalore's album...Right Now!...or a weirdly titled album...I thought...at the time...The Joshua Tree...by U2...

...well...I bought the 12 inch vinyl disc by the dudes from Dublin...went home...powered up the Denon stereo system...yeah...that's how I rolled back then...dropped the needle on the album...cranked the volume to "11"...Pattie...that's from a movie...plopped into a Papasan chair...and felt each wave of music...from this musical genius...wash over me...I may or may not have had some "help" in that department...and watched everything in my apartment...rattle and hum...

...today...as I was walking through the aisle of Fry's...I saw a sign that read..."reserve your copy of the re-release of The Joshua Tree...out November 20th...20 year anniversary edition"...20 years?!?!?...WOW!!!!...in those two decades of decadence...the record stores gave way to Fry's...albums all but pushed aside for CDs and DVDs...my Denon stereo abandoned for my Sony home theater...my Papasan chair...replaced by theater seating...I gained 30 plus pounds and a few gray hairs...while Bono was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize...knighted...and named Person of the Year...hmmm...almost fair trades...

...while U2 is no...Van Halen...Motley Crue...or Poison...Bono has penned some of the greatest lyrics of all times...Where the Streets Have No Name...With or Without You...In God's Country...I had no idea he wrote..."When Love Comes to Town"...FOR BB King...so...I will get the re-release version of The Joshua Tree...crank the Sony to "11"...plop into the Palliser WITH bass shaker...no "help" this time...well...maybe a different kind of help...because...I STILL haven't found...what...I'm looking for....

...as someone who has been purchasing cigarettes ever since the only decision was to buy "real" cigarettes...or menthol...I have had to pull out my license quite a few times to prove I was old enough to smoke them...

...fast forward life's dvr...twenty plus years...to last Friday...my best friend came into town to attend a wedding...now my friend didn't have to fast forward the dvr one or two plus years...so...we have always hovered around the same age...too young during disco...too old to understand iPhone without reading the instructions...with out-stretched arms...but...I was the one that got carded...if...we got carded at all...

...back to Friday...while I was sporting a Serpico-ish...young kids...go ask Mom...and Pattie...that's from a movie...amount of facial hair...with a touch of gray in a few places...and my friend was clean shaven...except for some mold...on his upper lip...he likes to call a moustache...we proceeded to a "Pop" stand...and...while waiting for Archie...Veronica...Betty and the rest of the gang...we decided to order some "pop"...I wasn't expecting to pull out my driver's license this time...BUT...I was stunned when they asked for his!!!!!...oh yeah...you can smoke INSIDE in Sugarland!!!!

...NOW...I didn't think anything about it...certainly not jealousy...but...possibly subconsciencely...that doesn't look right...the next morning...I was shaving...TOO closely perhaps...made a "mistake"...and...I had to shave my beard off...my friend made fun of me the rest of the day!!!!!...AND...neither one of us got carded...

...While I'm not ready for "Just for Men"...I haven't been in the market for "Clearasil" for quite some time...I HAVE decided to start a work-out plan...and...eat a little healthier...can't cut back on the energy drinks...not just yet...and to keep my "soul patch"...it's the only part that doesn't have gray in it...we'll see what happens...

...I did a quick check around most of the city's sports websites...so it's not scientific...BUT...I did notice...that...for the most part...everyone tries to put their best foot forward...then there is McFly...let's just say he knows what Reeboks taste like...

...for example...on Wednesday...McFly proclaimed that the KOOL-AIDers talked to most of the Rockets players except for Yao Ming who arrives on Thursday...well...EVERYBODY might could have a chance to talk to Yao Ming on Thursday...his first "day" back in the Houston/Austin area...Mark Berman had an interview with Yao Ming on WEDNESDAY night...in Houston...no spin doctor needed...ONLY ON FOX!!!!...as well as a one on one interview with Houston Texans Cedric Killings!!!!

...while McFly announced he had the best high school coverage in town...his camera left in a frenzy from Needville BEFORE the game was over...and missed an exciting double overtime game...we have postgame interviews and celebration on FOXHILITESHOUSTON.COM...AND...WE have Matt Sampsell giving you awesome highlites on Fridays...as well as introducing you to the Player of the Week on Sunday Xtra...not only great athletes...but...good people that let you know the "future" is in good hands...

...HELLO!!!!!...McFLY!!!!!...you must REALLY be thirsty!!!!!

...McFly claimed to have breakfast with "people in the know" during the Astros general manager search...yet...the night before the Astros called a press conference to announce the new general manager..."Scoop" Berman...not McFly...had it an interview with Ed Wade on MYFOXHOUSTON.COM...then...in the morning...Mark was the only one at Union Station to talk to Ed Wade BEFORE the afternoon press conference!!!!

...McFly says during the last Astros game he only saw one tv station person sitting in the press box with him...that's because the six man crew we sent to the Astros' game was working...talking to fans...recording Biggio's every movement...AND Mark even got a tv scoop on a Brad Ausmus offer from the Astros...you know...things you can't do while sipping Kool-Aid sitting alone in the press box...

...McFly insists that he is "in tight" at A&M and UT...yet...the day BEFORE this year's press junket...Coach Franchione granted an interview...one on one...with OUR Keith Calkins...AND...Keith was the ONLY reporter that was allowed to witness a grueling EIGHT HOUR kidney operation...12 hours in all that day...that gave UT's Carson Kainer a chance to play professional baseball...and his dad...Ron...also the donor...keeps Keith informed on Carson's progress up the MLB ladder!!!!

...I could go on and on...but...it would seem as if I was drinking from some kind of Kool-Aid also...so I'll stop here...too bad there isn't some kind of justice...you know...an umpire...referee...or...Marshall Dillon to keep everyone in check...until then...just pass on the Kool-Aid...

...when did the pendulum start swinging back to the 1800s?!?!?...I mean...I know when the no smoking policy went into effect...BOY do I know...but when did the "no colorful language" law get voted on?!?!?

...I was at a grocery store early this morning...had to break a hundred...so...I bought an energy drink...went for the Monster...diet of course...this time...anyway...gave the kid the "benny" and he looked at it and said..."Damn!!!...I don't think I can break this yet..."  and he went to the customer service area...where...his supervisor...I think...started an intense conversation with the kid...few moments later...another kid came with my change...I asked what happened to the first kid...and...he said the boss told the first kid not to be cursing in front of customers....DAMN...a curse word!?!?!?...well...at least not one of the big ones...and...are there any big ones any more?!?!?!

...George Carlin used to have a bit where he talked about the seven words you can't say on tv...he says he doesn't do that bit anymore because...most of those words are OK to say on tv now...by the way...DAMN...not on the list...

...it's not like he used the "F" word...which I use "F"requently...or the "N" word...which I "F"N never use...or...it's not like he asked me to do something physically impossible...without being a contortionist...or Ron Jeremy...

...got up this morning...just as I had for the past 42 years...three hundred sixty some odd days before...I didn't notice anything strange...well...something happened to 103.7...AND...Wayne Brady STILL had a show on FOX...other than that...nothing else weird...

...anyway...I got up to walk Sammy...and...get the local "news"paper...not to read...to help with Sam's "walk"...afterwards...I drove...without Sammy...to STARBUCK'S...caffeine makes him hyper...and...ordered "the Usual"...venti...half black...half passion tea...on ice...with three Equals...four...if I'm feeling devious...not that I'm a picky drinker...

...it was nice outside...translation...not sweaty hot...and...not raining...so I decided to partake al fresco...while in the great outdoors...I pulled out a square and my Hawaiian lighter...not that Hawaiians have exotic lighters...this one WAS different...but...it was a just a lighter...from Hawaii...thanks Scotty and Tammy...anyway...as the crackle from the drag off the cigarette faded into the Westheimer traffic noise...I started to hear folks murmur...now...I can honestly say this is the first time I've ever heard a murmur...and I did something I've never done before...I started to pay attention...and...I realized they were pointing and talking about me...smoking!!!!

...the last time I had to worry about the Marlboro Militia...the Salem Secret Service...the Ultra Light Elite...the GPC Gestapo...I was 16...ducking from Sister Mary Margaret at Our Lady of Perpetual Motion...not that I went there...I just looked good in the uniform...BUT I never felt like Anne Frank hiding from the Lucky Strike Lynch Mob...until now!!!!

...when did non-smokers take over!?!?!...I did the EXACT same thing just TWO days ago...no one said anything then...I quickly crushed out my cigarette...slowly started to leave...and got this feeling I was 16 again...back in school...and...EVERYBODY knows that smoking ain't allowed in school!!!!!

…these guys became my idols of rock…guitar god...drum demon...bad boy bass...crazy singer...awesome stage show...you know “man needs a lot to live…and…I’m living proof”…I thought these guys would rock on forever…then…the break up…the Diamond Dave years…OVER “maybe enough…ain‘t enough…for you”…enter Sammy Hagar…and “I tell myself…only fools rush in”…BUT I already liked the Red Rocker…my collie is named Sammy…I should have “learned my lesson…baby…and…it left a scar”…Hagar years…OVER…not EVEN getting into the Cherone months…

…I just FINALLY broke down and bought an iPOD…not just any generic mp3 or 4 player…a 100% iPOD….only to see folks lined up to buy an iPHONE!!!!…so…I have decide that…it’s not the product that keeps changing…it’s the technology…

…I started loading my archaic iPOD and then saw where some bands are selling their “albums” on jump drives…and…after you download the songs…you can delete them from the jump drive…and…you now have a jump drive to load up anything you want!!!…why again did I buy the iPOD!??!?!?

…last year’s 1080i is this year‘s 1080p…plasma versus LCD…blu-ray or HD dvds…XM against SIRIUS…where does it end?!?!?…oh yeah…and…ALSO…I heard a commercial on the radio last night…yeah…I still listen to local radio every once in awhile…there is a radar for sell…that…is GUARANTEED to beat police speed detection…AND…if it doesn’t…they will pay the ticket!!!!!…it’s called the PHAZER II…costs $124.95...let’s see…a normal speeding ticket costs…around a C-note…you do the math…

…I got home…made a grilled cheese sandwich…on the stove…not the microwave…plopped down on the couch…not the LazyBoy “theater seat” lounge chair…fired up the Magnavox eight track player…STILL works…not the Denon home theater system…popped in KISS…Destroyer…not Linkin Park…Minutes to Midnight….dusted off the Audio Technics headphones with the long coily cord…not the infared wireless Sony headset…and drifted off to sleep…

...you know...not for nothing...BUT...it's not like I didn't warn anybody or anything like that...

...allow me to back up...about a week...last Friday...Mark Berman talked to Jeff Van Gundy about being fired...and had quotes on FOX 26's website...so fast...that another television station...trying to play catch up...copied one...or TWO...of JVG's quotes...to get it on their website fast...they forgot to check...and credited KRIV as the source!!!!...I felt TOO bad to mention their call letters...but...you could CLICK TO them and see KRIV's call letters...

...fast forward to this week...again...Berman...with the quick draw...talked to Rashard Lewis' agent...who said..."he (Rashard) has decided to opt out and he'll be a free agent July 1st"...

...this time...another station...that starts with a K TRied Keeping up with Mark...well...they must have liked the story...AND the quote...so much...they quickly put up a story about the Seattle star...and credited KRIV...not once...not twice...but three times...talk about not knowing your ABC 1two3's of reporting!!!!

...the story even starts with mad props to FOX 26!!!!!

...I wonder if they will start calling Mark...just to see what they will be copying next!!!!
