The holiday season is clearly upon us which can mean a lot of different things, but one of many perks of this time of year is definitely the music. While I was in Houston last week for Thanksgiving I made sure to take advantage of Sunny 99.1's continuous Christmas music, and I have packed my iPod with some of my favorite Christmas songs.
Now everybody loves the traditional carols like Jingle Bells and Frosty the Snowman, as well as the moving/religious songs including Silent Night and O' Holy Night. But I'm interested to find out what Houston's favorite Non-Traditional Holiday Songs are. A few of my favorites include:
1. All I Want for Christmas is You - Mariah Carey
2. Happy Christmas (War is Over) - John Lennon
3. What Christmas Means to Me - Stevie Wonder
4. Do They Know It's Christmas? - Band Aid
5. The Chanukah Song - Adam Sandler
I'm interested to find out a few myfoxhouston bloggers favorites, as well as excited to get ideas about what else I can add to my playlist.
Can Britney Make A Comeback?

Not unlike many preteen boys of my
generation, I had a huge crush on Britney Spears; even to the point where I had
her posters plastered on my walls. I watched her go through her sweet image, her
risque phase, and then came the Chaotic period. She's had one and a half
failed marriages ( the half is if you count her marriage to Jason Alexander
(not the Seinfeld star)), she popped out two mini-K-Fed's, she shaved it all,
and in the span of a week shes checked herself in and out of rehab about as
many times as Bobby Brown has in his lifetime. For the last few years and more so
the past months, she's been the punchline of countless jokes.
After all of this, It looks like Britney
Spears is on her way to making a comeback. She's started to get in shape again,
and she even went out and bought a new wig. The past few nights she's preformed
12 minute sets at the House Of Blues and tickets went for a much as $300 each.
I must admit she's slowly starting to resemble her old self and I'm willing to
give her a second chance, but she's going to need to record new songs and stop
preforming Why Don't You Do Something...forever.
So the question is, does America (and more
importantly do Houston music fans) have it in their heart to forgive Britney
Spears? She wouldn't be the first fallen celebrity to make a remarkable
comeback, but are you going to support hers? Or do you think that her apparent
reemergence won't last? I guess it will all depend on how Lucky she is.
After They Go Solo...

Many popular musical groups have a break out star, however the question then becomes: are these stars better after they go solo, or should they have stayed loyal to their former group members? Beyonce has become a household name and as a solo artist she has released many chart-topping tracks. However, Destiny's Child was one of the prominent musical groups of the last decade, and the unforgettable combination of her and Kelly Rowland is what's really Irreplaceable. (Note that I chose not to include Michelle Williams as one of the reasons Destiny's Child was so successful). So is Beyonce better off solo or with Destiny's Child? Diana Ross seemed to have no problem keeping audiences hanging on after she left the Supremes. However this seemed to have a worse effect on the Supremes then on Diana. Sting and the Police were broken up for years, however on this past weeks American Idol, contestants chose to sing Police tracks such as Every Breath You Take. In fact much of what Sting is famous for comes from his days with the Police. I noticed that nobody chose to sing a track off of Songs from Labyrinth (Sting's latest album). While we're on the subject of American Idol, we have to bring up Gwen Stefani. While I guess she has enjoyed being a solo artist after planning her Sweet Escape from No Doubt, her sound has completely changed. Was this for better or for worse?
What other musical groups launched the careers of one breakout member, leaving the rest behind? Is the solo artist usually better than the group?
Note: I realize that the exception to the rule is Justin Timberlake saying Bye, Bye, Bye to
N Sync.
*Off topic: For those of you who happened to see the American
Idol results show this week...what was Akon's purpose? I believe he
sang for a total of 11 seconds. I'm not sure him and Gwen are the best
combination...Nobody Wants to See Them Together.*
