Many popular musical groups have a break out star, however the question then becomes: are these stars better after they go solo, or should they have stayed loyal to their former group members?  Beyonce has become a household name and as a solo artist she has released many chart-topping tracks.  However, Destiny's Child was one of the prominent musical groups of  the last decade, and the unforgettable combination of her and Kelly Rowland is what's really Irreplaceable. (Note that I chose not to include Michelle Williams as one of the reasons Destiny's Child was so successful).  So is Beyonce better off solo or with Destiny's Child?  Diana Ross seemed to have no problem keeping audiences hanging on after she left the Supremes.  However this seemed to have a worse effect on the Supremes then on Diana.  Sting and the Police were broken up for years, however on this past weeks  American Idol, contestants chose to sing Police tracks such as Every Breath You Take.  In fact much of what Sting is famous for comes from his days with the Police.  I noticed that nobody chose to sing a track off of Songs from Labyrinth (Sting's latest album).  While we're on the subject of American Idol, we have to bring up Gwen Stefani.  While I guess she has enjoyed being a solo artist after planning her Sweet Escape from No Doubt, her sound has completely changed.  Was this for better or for worse?

What other musical groups launched the careers of one breakout member, leaving the rest behind?  Is the solo artist usually better than the group?

Note:  I realize that the exception to the rule is Justin Timberlake saying Bye, Bye, Bye to
N Sync.

*Off topic:  For those of you who happened to see the American Idol results show this week...what was Akon's purpose?  I believe he sang for a total of 11 seconds.  I'm not sure him and Gwen are the best combination...Nobody Wants to See Them Together.*

Paul McCartney had a great solo career, too, but you can't really compare anything to the Beatles. I mean, c'mon! LOL

I preferred Gwen when she was in No Doubt. She's waaaaaay out there as a solo artist. I was really looking forward to hearing some Akon, and was really disappointed he didn't perform more. I think his purpose was to promote their upcoming tour. That's the only reason I can come up with.

Gwen Stefani when in No Doubt was the group. She was weird and out there but that's what made it work. The Harajuku thing she's doing now...is just too out there. I like twenty something buxom Asian chicks dressed in school girl out-fits as much as the next guy (perhaps maybe more) but give it a rest already. There exist to me two artist who broke free of groups and went on to be much bigger than the original group.

1. Michael Jackson (The Jackson 5/The Jacksons)

2. Ozzy Osborne (Black Sabbath)

There are others who performed well but will forever be known as former members of (whatever group) such as Peter Gabriel or Phil Collins, Lionel Ritchie or Ronnie James Dio, but for the most part if you were part of a group you'll forever be linked to it.

I love Gwen Stefani as much solo as with No Doubt. The sound is different, but of course it would be..there's only one personality with a solo artist versus the mix you get with a group.
Robert Plant was pretty good by himself. So is Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins-I didn't even know Peter Gabriel was part of Genesis till a couple years ago. Sting did well, too..remember "If You Love Someone, Set them Free?" Free free, set them free..
Except for Beyonce and Gwen, the only women I can remember who did well after their groups split were Belinda Carlisle and Stevie Nicks.
