I have a few rules for selecting a good Chinese restuarant.

1. Avoid buffets. They suck and are as authentic as a Mexican restaurant in the middle of Pakistan.

2. Find out where Chinese people (Not Chinese Americans but people BORN in China...or their kids) eat. If they're going out for it, it's gotta be good. Sort of like seeing ME in a creole/cajun place. I can cook that stuff at home, if I go out for it the place MUST rock.

3. Be willing to drive really good Asian restaurants will be in areas with a high Asian concentration.

My advice? Go to Bellaire. There are lots of GREAT places and depending on what style (i.e. Schezuan(sp) Hunan, Cantonese) you want you can find almost anything. If you walk in some place and you're the ONLY non Chinese there...the food will probably be pretty good.

If you don't want to do that then hope Pattie reads this and reccomends something. Her parents are immigrants and I think she knows a little "sumthin' sumthin'".

BessieLou... I am the same as you in that I think it's really hard to find a decent Chinese food place. Well, I don't know where exactly in Spring Branch you live, but there's a little place on 249 @ Louetta called 'Egg Rolls', and they have some of the best in Houston. I really like their Crispy Walnut Shrimp, and their eggrolls aren't that bad either. The wife likes the moo shoo chicken (it's really good). But... for my money, nobody makes eggrolls as good as Jack-in-the-Box (Believe it)

Dread is right...Bellaire is THE place for Chinese food.
Not too long ago my X and I took my whole family out for Chinese. We were the only white people in there. My family rocks, but they can be a bit, ah, redneck? when it comes to trying ethnic cuisines. My dad kept saying the place looked like hangout for the Chinese mob.

Who cares? The food was awesome!!
