I went to the dentist today and got one of the bigger disappointments of my life. Which is unusual, since I've spent most of my half-century avoiding dentists like the plague because they are harbingers or excruciating pain.

But a few weeks back I finally decided that hey, it was time I finally broke down and did somthing about my teeth. My family has a history of bad teeth and I knew this was coming, but I figured what the heck, I have dental insurance now and I need a nice smile to show the public. So I went to the place that's advertised on TV, because I'm a coward.

My first three visits were extremely productive. We got rid of several teeth that were unsavable. We got things cleaned up and the gum disease endemic to my family tree under control. Today was the day we were to talk about final solutions to give me some bright smileys to share with the world.

I was fine until they got to the $10,000 price. And the fact that my dental insurance had a $2,000 limit. So now I'm stuck with five gaping holes in my mouth and my diet is limited to variations of mashed potatoes.

A thousand years from now some archaeologist will unearth my bones in the cemetery for veterans of the Second Mexican-American War and wonder what kind of a low-life slug I must have been, since I was missing so many teeth in an age when dental care was so readily available.

Some of the lefties out there will be quick to sing that well, this wouldn't be happening to me if we had national health insurance, everything would be taken care of. Maybe that's true. But what that would mean is that all you other idiots out there would be paying for my familial trait and lack of poor dental hygeine -- and that's simply not fair. I shouldn't have to pay for your abortion nor your lung cancer treatments, and I damned well don't expect you to pay for my dental work.

We need to wake up to the fact that health care costs in the U.S. are out of control, and the only way to get them under control is to put a cap on tort -- because that is what is driving everything. Universal insurance won't improve care, it won't improve access, all it will do is institutionalize the greed of trial lawyers at the expense of taxpayers.

"it was time I finally broke down and did somthing about my teeth"

This was your fault you know? It's a pay me now or PAY me later deal. Borrow the money and get your dang teeth fixed and don't miss any more semi-annual dentist appointments. I think I'll call mine right now.

Poor Oral hygiene promotes poor all round health.
Today's news that 18,000 citizens unnecessarily die due to allowing teeth to rot before getting medical attention.
Unlike other Countries who have National health services to cover such needs.
Clostridium and other forms of bacteria can build up under a tooth, cause blood poisoning and even brain tumors. (the brain being the closest organ).
People wonder why they feel so lifeless with bad teeth and those having treatment allow the dentist to plug with the same old cheap amalgam made half from toxic mercury, half from lead and other metals leaching and poisoning your system for many years.

Yes, the dentists are out of control with their get rich quick policies charging so much for a crown where the technician only receives 15% for the work.
Lucky me, I have a technician who takes impressions and fits crowns and bridges for a fraction of the cost on the side.
Some over the border dentists would treat for one third the cost here with exceptional work but the cost of motels and gas makes it now not affordable.

The medical center dental clinic has a long wait as most patients are immigrants and their kids having low cost and/or free treatment.
The charge $17. for one extraction if you're their before 7am first come first served Parking was $7. but now costs have increased.
We need a medical system to treat all and a stop to the scams billing the govnt. billions in handling the private side and the savings would save thousands from unnecessary death.

UTMB has a dental clinic that charges a sliding fee based on income. It's in the phone book. Possibly they can correct your problem. If all the illegals can get their mouths fixed for free, I don't see why you can't go and take advantage of that service. From what I understand, they do a good job.

Waiting until your teeth are bad, especially with knowledge of the family trait, isn't good. Not reviewing your dental policy prior to the work isn't good either. Double check that your policy is a $2,000 limit and not a $2,000 YEARLY limit (as most are). The dentist should have sat down with you and explained the whole game plan, what your insurance was expected to pay, and how much you would be responsible for; you should have requested the game plan prior to treatment.

It really irritates me the amounts dentists charge. It seems they are one of the true monopoly's out there. Most of us HAVE to have their services. The only way to avoid the high costs is to stay on top of your oral health with preventative care.

UTMB (according to my neighbor) has a three month wait due to overload and then you may get in for an assessment.
If you are considered viable for treatment then you'll be called 6 weeks later.
There is no doubt an affirmative action policy controlled by an Asian woman called Ann.(this is hear say)
America is conducted by ethnically devoted brainless liberals, not by ethical standards.
BayouV. may not be a candidate unless he gets a deep tan and squints his eyes.
I've known people who run businesses go and get gold inlays done at less cost of a dentist as a practice for the learning students.
Open to all if you can get in the door.
Last is a product called Perio Therapy mouth wash which attacks anaerobotic bacteria (sulfur) for gums and halitosis by Dr.Katz now in Walgeens and other stores and online, works well, has tea tree oil in the formula and prevents tonsil rocks / sore throats.
Good luck.

Would you share the name of your technician with us less fortunate?

I'd very much like to help and cut out the middle man's big pie but my contact requested not to make it public.
It would cause professional problems.
The work overload also prevents helping any new (selective clients) those known personally.

Suggested calling NIDA National Institute of Dental Research 301 496 6241 (check number)
They often conduct free/low cost studies in areas you may qualify after assessment.

BayouVixen: Premiums are higher because we are already paying for everybody's health care. I am paying for other people's lung cancer, lymphoma, etc. That has never bothered me. Yet my child with a neurological disease, autism, is excluded from insurance and any therapy I seek for other problems for him will get rejected because that autism diagnosis comes in and they say, "We don't cover autism." I then have to submit objection after objection that the treatment being received is not due to his autism, but it always falls on deaf ears. It has nothing to do with tort reform. Until we get rid of the good old boy system where doctors will report other doctors who are doing bad things, the courts are sometimes the only way to help. You should look up the name Eric Scheffey on Houston Chronicle archives from 1989 to current and read about this orthopedic surgeon. You don't think his colleagues and that hospital he practiced at knew he was doing drugs? When I was working for a cardiologist, he once told me he would never refer his patients to doctor XYZ because that doctor was a drug addict, alcoholic, etc. Yet the doctor I worked for, well at least the office manager, was involved in Medicare/Medicaid fraud and I was fired for stepping up and saying something. That is another reason why premiums are so high. There are some other things, too, that play into this. When I had a spinal tap, the radiologist hit a nerve, and I had horrible pain postop. I got 2 Vicodin before being discharged and I paid $8.00 for 2 pills. You can get a month's supply of this drug from W

continued: Wal-Mart for $4.00. The great American rip-off. Oh, and by the way, the insurance industry told the Texas Legislature that covering kids with autism would only increase premiums about $1.00 a month. Texas passed that it would only cover kids 3-5 years of age. Other states have been able to cover autism with better results (lifetime caps, per year limits, and some with no limits at all).
