BARK's Yelps

What constitutes victory? In his speech after the towers were hit, GWB said that the terrorists could not run or hide. He said we will destroy them all and those who shelter them. He said we would be able to end the threat they posed.

After Afghanistan was hit, Bin Laden came out and said he would mess up our way of life. He would show us how wrong we have been.

Where there used to be two main madrassas in SE Pakistan, there are now four. In 2001 there was no Al Qaeda presence in Iraq, now they have as many Islamist recruiters on their streets as we have armed forces recruiters on ours.

The Patriot act has changed policies in this nation that have taken 230 years to create. Habeas Corpus is suspended, which is constitutional, but Thomas Jefferson wrote a piece showing how the odds of that ever paying off were highly unlikely and historically speaking how it never has paid off.

Though not in our constitution there is a common idea in this nation about the right to privacy. Wire taps and legalized spying have changed that value.

We don’t trust our neighbors anymore, we are building barriers on our borders… Come on ya’ll this nation prides itself on breaking down walls, not building them. We were happy to see Berlin’s fall, we were not happy to see it built.

We have failed our commitments in Geneva. I thought that a mans handshake here was as good as his signature. We did both in 1949, but as soon as that was no longer convenient we acted as if we misunderstood the terms of the contract.

If our goal was to end their existence, and we have only increased their numbers, and their goal was to mess with our way of life, then seriously, who won?

Bravo Bark, bravo.
Points well made.
I suspect somewhere the bad guys are very satisfied with the last seven years.

All the bad guys are happy. Bin Laden gets his name in the history books as a guy who hurt America, Bush gets his legacy as 'The Crusader' or something, but for these last seven years the best America has to offer have died for what? Oil? Democracy? Global Capitalism?

All the bad guys win here. Iraqi citizens die everyday for nothing. US soldiers die everyday for nothing. The civilians and soldiers are the good guys. And neither of them have won anything.

I couldn't agree with you more. Terrorism doesn't necessarily mean planes crashing into buildings. It is about fear. We are tearing ourselves apart and Bin Laden and his group are just laughing at how effective they have been. That is why they haven't attacked us since 2001. Why spend all that money on a major attack when we are doing it to ourselves? There is a saying that the threat of torture is more effective than torture itself. Can I say the same is true for terrorism? The threat of possible terrorism again on our soil has been far more effective at creating fear and collapsing our economy than physical terrorism.

Fear is a powerful motivator. And people in charge have been using it relentlessly. We made it through the blank lists of McCarthy to learn nothing and to begin the same program anew with slightly different targets.

It is really sad; Historical Amnesia.

Not only historical amnesia, but history doesn't seem to be an important topic in schools anymore; school has become glorified babysitting.

I like to think it has become a labratory.

We constantly change what we ask of students. Not years to years, but decade to decade. Now our trend is all math and science.

We try methods which we believe will work for the children of a nation of 300 million, with terrior as vast, and industry as vast.

This is hypothesis.

Experiment is that we test them all the time. Screw learning about history or civics right now tell me what is two plus two. I have heard teacher talk about how much of their year is devoted to testing and test prep.

Its like why the hell did these teachers get a degree in education if they were only going to proctor exams forever. We have denigrated educators to lab assistants.

Conclusions are being wrought as we speak. Now this is where science and politics merge...

Science says NCLB does not work and that in HISD pass rates increase with a strong correlation to drop out rates. Positive not negative correlation.

Politics can look you dead in your eyes and say it works when it blatantly does not.

We have new labs for political scientists. They are run by ISDs.
