Girl says anti-illegal immigration sign led to attack

The debate over illegal immigration may have reached new lows, with the story of a 13-year-old girl who says she was beaten after bringing an anti-illegal immigration sign to school. The Associated Press moved this story today:

ATHENS, Texas (AP) - An East Texas girl who made an anti-illegal immigration sign as part of a U.S. history class assignment said she was beaten by other students.

Her sign said: ``If you love our nation, stop illegal immigration.''

The father of Melanie Bowers, 13, of Athens said he's keeping her out of classes until probably next week until the situation is resolved.

``She's upset, first and foremost, because she didn't feel like she had any reason to be attacked,'' J.R. Bowers told The Associated Press on Tuesday. ``She loves going to school. We're having to keep her out because we're scared for her.''

As a class project, students made ``protest signs'' about past and current issues.
Melanie Bowers took her sign to school March 31. J.R. Bowers said his eighth-grade daughter was attacked Friday in a hallway. She suffered scrapes and bruises and later sought medical attention.

Police are reviewing security video from Athens Middle School.

Superintendent Fred Hayes said the investigation continues.

``I think that probably what we ought to look at is, if it's a current issue, we probably don't need a protest poster made on that issue,'' Hayes said.

i do not under stand how the kids that beat this poor child only got in school suspension...it was a school project and the school is doing nothing to support the girl.  and as far as "reviewing the video tape...everything just so happened out of the view of the camera...

Apollonian, Only White people can do hate crimes. For any other race they have a green light to beat white people down. Ecspecially our little mexican friends who had to sneak into America under the cover of darkness. After all we stole this land....Didn't we?

Most likely the parents will bring on a massive law suit to the school, principal, counselors, district, board members, and parents of the girls who beat their daughter.
My lawyer friends tell me this all the time and it is true, hit him where it hurts the most, their pockets.

I find it an outrage that this girl has not received backing from her school! Why are we,citizens, being told to "sit down and shut up!",about this illegal immigration issue?Even more puzzling....why are we doing it?

Once again, I feel we, the citizens , should file suit against our government for "failure to protect and serve".Illigal immigration is a blight to our way of life and we have elected officals and laws in place....why are they being ignored? Now WE are not allowed to recognize the problem or rally against it in our own defence?Something is terribly wrong with this.

NEWS FLASH...

I heard on the radio this morning that the girl is on the school's survillence camera beating herself up!

THe three students are still in trouble for taking her sign, but not for beating her up.

Can anyone confirm this story?

Wow...if the report of her trying to frame the other kids is true...

And at this point...do you blame the girls parents for possibly filling her mind and heart with hate? So much so that she would try to get the other students in such trouble? And injuring herself in the process?

Foehammer,

It may or may not have been parents that filled her with these thoughts. It could also be her 'friends' at school, etc.

My mother tried her best to keep me and my siblings non-racist when we were growing up. As a kid, I did think there were issues with people because of race. I would have to say my then prejudices were because of pier pressure from 'friends' of the time. Ignorance of a child.

I have to now say, that since I am older & wiser, I have fallen back on the impressions that were taught to me by my mother all those years ago. I have been non-prejudicial because of race for many, many years now.

I wish others could see people in the same light as me. I don't give a flying flip what race someone is, just how they act, and treat me & others.

45ACP - You do have a valid point there. I agree with you.

But it's just so hard to believe that a child of this age would go to such lengths as this. That is, of course, if the reports of this being a farse is true.

What I heard on the radio while driving in to work this morning is that the school had her on video (school survielence camera) beating herself in the face, etc.

I have not yet seen it in print on any news website, but am still looking.

She MIGHT have just been trying to stir the pot of controversy, while gaining some attention to herself. Pure speculation on my part.

I am just your normal kilt wearing Texans fan. Texan born and proud of it. I have varied opinions about many issues, as you might have already read. I do like a great discussion, some would call arguements...you say tomatoe, I say tomato. Be happy while you're living, for you're a long time dead.
